Chapter 1 - CHAPTER 1

  Lunaris

"Lunaris!" Grey—my Beta's panicked voice came through the mind link.

I snapped my eyes open and sprang from the bed.

"Talk to me. What's happening?" I asked.

Loud howls made me look up. I ran out of the pack house as the wolves filtered out, eyes flashing with alarm.

"They're coming," Grey said.

Fuck!

"Derrik!" I screamed through the mind link.

Derrik, my Gamma approached in his wolf form, head bowed.

"Gather the warriors. Have them meet me at the border," I ordered.

He howled before taking off into the woods, several wolves behind him.

"Shall we?" Era, my wolf perked up.

"Lunaris?"

I paused when a small hand tugged at my jacket. Winter—one of the pups—rubbed her eyes groggily.

"Is everything okay, Lunaris?" she asked.

"Winter!" One of the wolves, rushed over, a panicked look etched on her face.

I stared at Mary. "Take her inside."

"Winter, everything's going to be fine." I squeezed her arm.

"You promise?"

I forced a smile. "Promise."

"Alpha Lunaris!" Grey's voice came through the mind link again.

I stood up, meeting the eyes of the she-wolves and pups around me.

"Take the pups inside. Lock the doors," I ordered.

They nodded, grabbing a pup beside them and ushering them inside.

"You're going to be the death of us one day, Lunaris."

I met Eric's harsh glare.

"You are not fit to be the Alpha of the Crescent Moon pack and you know it."

He shifted, fur exploding through skin, and bolted to the woods before I could reply.

I breathed in deeply, letting Era take charge. The sounds of bones breaking filled the air as my clothes ripped off my body.

"Finally," Era sighed happily.

Her soft paws dug into the earth as she shook her black fur.

"Go!" I yelled.

She took off, the wind brushing against her coat. I heard the sounds of paws hitting the ground a close distance away from us.

"They're here."

My wolves bristled, snarling at the wolves invading our territory. They paved the way for me as I moved forward.

Blaze—Eric's wolf turned to me, snout up. Grey walked over to me, still in his human form.

I walked forward, my eyes on the leader of the invading wolves.

"Tell them they are trespassing," I said to Grey through the mind link.

"This is the Crescent Moon pack's territory. You are trespassing," Grey called out.

The leader changed into his human form and walked towards us.

"This is not your territory." His eyes met mine.

"This will all be Alpha River's territory soon enough. I'd advise you to go somewhere else."

River, leader of the Crimson Shadow pack, was a ruthless and cruel Alpha. He wanted to have our home so he could extend his.

I'd told him in the politest way possible to go fuck himself.

He didn't handle rejection well. I'd lost countless wolves…and pups to his cruelty. No more.

"You are rogue wolves. Why are you even here?" Grey said.

The leader chuckled. "You haven't heard? River is giving us a place in his pack if we help take over this territory."

Era snarled. "This is our home!"

My wolves howled loudly behind me. Their growls echoed through the woods, paws digging into the earth as they got ready to fight.

Blaze stood beside me, eyes narrowed, baring his fangs.

Grey walked beside me. "This is our home. It belongs to the Crescent Moon pack, not the Crimson Shadow pack."

The leader smiled. "Very well, then."

His body cracked and twisted, fur ripping through his skin as he shifted back. "If you won't give it up, we'll just have to take it."

Era growled loudly.

"For our home!" she yelled.

"For our home," the wolves echoed, surging forward.

Her paws pounded through the ground as she ran, pushing past the other wolves to get to the leader.

"Your left!" I warned.

Era turned, sinking her fangs into the wolf's flank. He howled in pain as blood gushed out from the open wound.

Era spat out bloodied fur, snarling. A brown wolf snuck up on her and sank its fangs into her neck. She barked in pain.

She caught his hind leg and bared her teeth. The wolf yelped loudly, but she was too angry to let go.

"We have to get to the leader," I said.

It was the only way to stop the fight.

She didn't want to lose any more wolves, and neither did I. She lunged at the wolf. Her teeth sank into his neck…until it snapped.

She finally let go.

Her eyes narrowed as she watched the fight around her. Win—Derrik's wolf was ambushed by three wolves. They snarled as they surrounded him, their lips pulled back.

Era growled and ran towards the leader.

His eyes narrowed when he saw her coming. His fur bristled as he stared at her. Era snarled, showing off her fangs.

He lunged at her. Era feinted a left. He fell for it. He staggered to the ground, rolling in the dirt.

She jumped on him, sinking her teeth into his neck. The wolf howled in pain. Era sunk in deeper.

He let out a low whimper. His eyes fluttered as she crushed his throat.

His heartbeat thumped slowly, until it slowly faded.

The invader wolves stopped when they saw their leader dead. Era howled, triggering our pack. She turned, eyes blazing as she stared at one of the enemy wolves.

They turned on their heels and ran into the woods.

Era turned to Win. "Make sure they don't come back."

Win howled before taking off after them.

"Give me control," I said.

She nodded and handed over the reins. I changed back into my human form and stared at the dead wolves around me.

My pack. I should have protected them.

It was my duty to protect them.

Blaze walked towards me, his fur bristling.

"This is all your fault, Lunaris." HIs voice thundered through the mind link.

His hazel eyes mirrored mine. I could see the hatred brewing in them like they always had since we were kids.

"You are not fit to be our Alpha."
