Chapter 28 - Chap 28 :

The next day, the pair decided to head out on their own bikes, and except for a few surprised looks and a couple of compliments they got, nothing changed—except Wednesday's absence. That led the girls to visit her house.

After finishing their course for the day, they headed straight to the principal's office to ask about the reason for Wednesday's absence.

They got the answer from the student office: she was out on sickness leave.

So the adventurous twins decided it was good to pay her a visit. Thankfully, they came this time on their own bikes.

Following the address, they soon found themselves confused in the middle of a forest road.

"This is weird," Lapis said and looked around, stopping their rides.

"Yeah, I just had the feeling we entered an arena," Rubie murmured, trying to find what was wrong, her murmur catching Lapis's attention.

"That's it!" Lapis said, getting off the bike. Stepping a couple of steps forward, she closed her eyes and let her senses spread. Soon, she picked up a unique energy from a certain point.

"Found it!" Lapis said, looking at her sister, who by now realized what was going on and smiled at her with pride.

Lapis might give an airhead vibe, but in investigating and battle vision, she was second only to Loyed, which technically put her first among the rest of the races.

"So, they had a hiding or confusing ward around?" Rubie asked, getting a nod from Lapis before they rode again toward where she felt it.

Soon, they found themselves in front of an old classic mansion, screaming dark vibes all around.

"Wow," Lapis looked awed. "I thought it was only Wednesday—it looks like a family trait, just like the book."

Rubie looked at her sister and sighed. "Just don't let anything slip, please."

"I am not that much of an airhead," Lapis puffed her cheeks in anger before ringing the bell.

Seconds after that, a voice came from the comms, sounding confused more than anything. "Hello, who is this?"

"Hello, sorry for the late visit," Rubie said. "We are friends of Wednesday. We heard she is on sick leave, so we came to visit and handle her work for today."

On the other side, Morticia was about to enter the garden when she heard the doorbell.

Something surprised her. After all, they didn't get any unannounced visits. Taken by interest, she picked up the intercom, answering the door.

Her surprise deepened even more as she heard about the pair of twins from Wednesday.

And as they were described—a pair of excited twins, and for some reason I can't push them away.

Now Morticia grew more intrigued. After all, not just anyone could get past the wards around the mansion, let alone "normal" mortals.

That, of course, was on Wednesday's mother. Even if she hadn't awakened her ability yet, she was aware of the other side.

"Welcome. Please enter. I will meet you at the front gate," Morticia said, asking the twins to come in.

Lapis and Rubie passed the front gate and stopped in front of the mansion's main door.

"Greetings. My name is Morticia Addams, Wednesday's mother," she introduced herself, looking at the pair with hidden awe and surprise.

As an experienced person from the other side, she had quite the sense, and just from a glance she could tell these two girls hid great potential—not only in raw power, but they weren't normal humans, probably not even human to begin with.

Now this is interesting. From the level of their purity, they belong to one of the old clans. The question is—which one?

"Nice to meet you, Lady Addams. I am Rubie Rageheart," Rubie said with a respectful tone.

"And my name is Lapis Rageheart, nice to meet you," Lapis said before looking at Morticia and asking straight, "Is Wednesday okay?"

Morticia looked at the girl for a second before feeling a stone in her heart fall, and she sighed. "Yes, sweetheart, she's okay. She's just in a special condition right now."

Hearing that some kids got close to Wednesday was interesting enough, but meeting them now and knowing they were also from the other side made Morticia think this was some kind of plot from other clans.

After all, she knew firsthand what kind of character her daughter had. But looking at the honest worry in Lapis's eyes—something that couldn't be faked—she felt a little relieved.

Still, she decided to do a little background check on this "Rageheart family."

Inviting the pair into the house, by the time they sat in the living room, the butler had already set tea in front of them.

"So, how did you find the house?" Morticia asked, finding it meaningless to beat around the bush.

The pair looked at each other before Rubie sighed. "Straight to the question."

"Lapis here has quite sharp senses, so we found the entrance to the ward," Rubie added.

At the same time, Morticia could sense their wariness rise.

"Oh, don't be so alert. I was just interested. After all, the entrance to the ward was supposed to be hidden," Morticia added, knowing she had alarmed them by asking outright.

"Eh? That was supposed to be hidden?" Lapis asked, causing Morticia's smile to crumble a little. After all, she was one of the people who worked on it, and it was quite the masterpiece for its time.

"Well, don't take it to heart. The confusing effect is good, but using the gate as the core for the ward gives it away," Rubie explained.

"If it had a direct connection to all the wards, all you need to do is follow the energy signal and boom—you're in," Lapis said, surprising Morticia even more. After all, hardly any known species could sense energy at that level.

What's more, the way they talked about wards like they knew their way around them raised her suspicion about their origin even further.

"Well, thanks for the advice," Morticia said. Even if surprised, she caught the meaning behind their words and honestly found it helpful.

"Now, I guess I have to explain about Wednesday, right?" Morticia said. "Since you're already from the other side, I'll tell you straight—she awakened her inner ability."

Rubie and Lapis looked at each other before looking back at her and asking at the same time, "Will she be okay?"

That question alone revealed their sharp and knowledgeable minds to Morticia. After all, awakening abilities rarely had any danger—except for a few who had to go through long and painful processes. The Addams fell into that category.

Sadly, there was another reason for their concern. In AF, high beasts who burned after their parent's change gained unique abilities and elemental control at the age of seven. The process was painful, and in rare cases, children had to be moved to the hospital for specific monitoring.

"Well, she just has to sleep it through. Don't worry," Morticia said, though the worry in her eyes was visible.

Lapis looked at Rubie, and the latter knew what she meant—a silent question of whether they should ask Leo for help.

"Lady Addams, if it's alright, we can call a specialist doctor who has experience with this kind of condition," Rubie asked, sighing. She knew this might really upset the family, as she was openly revealing some of their aspects to someone she had just met.

But deep down, she felt it was the right thing to do.

"Just call me Morticia," she said, a smile spreading across her face as she stood and sat between the pair, patting their heads.

"Thank you, but no—she will be alright," Morticia said. "What I'm worried about is the kind of ability she will get."

And that was true. What the pair initially thought was concern about the process was actually worry about the aftermath.

"Oh, don't worry about that," Lapis said, but before she could let something slip, she heard her sister's voice in her mind. Easy, girl.

Rubie knew what Lapis was about to say and stopped her there. Noticing that, Lapis changed the direction of her words. "After all, Wednesday is a strong girl."

"Now that we know she's okay," Rubie said as she stood up, "we'll take our leave. We didn't tell our family—we don't want them to worry."

Bidding the lady goodbye, Rubie and Lapis rode back home.

Back in the house, Morticia took her phone and called someone. After a couple of seconds, the call connected.

"I need you to find anything you can about the Rageheart family—on both sides."

Ending the call, she looked at the phone for a second, sighed, and stood up, heading to her daughter's room.
