Chapter 24 - Toru Hagakure

The sky was blue and the weather was clear. It was a perfect day to go outside.

Near the train station, there was a small family restaurant. It had an antique sign above the door. Inside, it smelled like fresh food—rice, soup, and grilled fish. Soft music played from a speaker on the ceiling. It felt calm and cozy.

There were wooden chairs near the windows and small round tables in the middle. Some people were eating. Others were talking in happy voices.

In a corner, Neito sat with his parents. He was using a hairspray quirk to fix his blond hair. His mom sat next to him, holding a warm cup of green tea. His dad sat across from them, reading a newspaper. The paper made soft sounds as he turned the pages.

Neito finished his hair and looked out the window. He had not started eating yet. He poked his rice with his chopsticks.

Outside, he saw a little girl blowing bubbles from her bellybutton. A dog mutant barked from a balcony. Everything looked normal.

And a little boring.

He gave a small sigh.

"I wonder when the exam results will come," he said softly.

His mom looked up. "Don't worry, Neito. You did your best."

"I know," he said. "I just want to know already. Nezu won't tell me early."

His dad looked up from his paper. "Be patient, son. These things take time. But you did great. I'm sure."

Neito nodded slowly. He knew he did well. But waiting still felt hard.

He looked down at his food and was about to eat when—

Someone at the next table spoke.

"Excuse me, we need one more glass of water. Our daughter is here too."

Neito turned to look.

At the next table, there were two sets of clothes floating in the air—and one smaller set sitting in a chair.

His eyes got wide.

It was Toru Hagakure.

She was invisible. Only her clothes showed where she was. Her mom and dad were invisible too. Her mom wore a scarf and shiny earrings. Her dad wore a cap and sunglasses—even inside.

The waiter looked a little confused but nodded. He put a glass of water near the floating gloves.

"Here you go, miss…"

"Thanks!" Toru said happily.

Neito was surprised. What were the chances of seeing her here?

Then Mr. Hagakure saw them.

"Oh! Monoma-san?" he said with a smile. "What a surprise!"

Neito's mom turned too. "Hagakure-san? How nice to see you!"

Neito and Toru looked at each other. They were surprised too. They didn't know their parents knew each other.

Neito asked and found out that his dad worked with Toru's dad.

The adults started talking. They smiled and laughed together. Their friendly chatter filled the room, and soon they started talking about their kids.

"You were also at the U.A. exam, right?" Mr. Hagakure asked Neito.

"Yes," Neito said. He stood up a little. "I saw your daughter take down a robot quietly. She used her quirk really well."

The gloves waved. "Oh! You saw that? Thank you!"

"I saw you too," Toru said. "You were so fast! I couldn't even follow you."

Neito smiled. "That was the Rabbit quirk. I borrowed it from a pro. It helps me move fast and jump high."

Toru's mom leaned toward Neito's mom. "Did your son really train in another country?"

"Yes," Neito's mom said proudly. "He worked with Star and Stripe. He trained like a real hero."

Toru's dad nodded. "Very good. Our Toru was just happy not to get stepped on."

"Dad…" Toru whispered, feeling shy.

The adults laughed.

After a while, Neito and Toru walked outside. They each had a small drink. The air felt cool and fresh.

They sat on a short wall near some flowers. Pink flowers moved gently in the wind.

Neito drank quietly.

Toru looked at him. "You're not acting like I thought you would."

He looked at her. "What do you mean?"

"I thought you were wild," she said. "In the test, you fought like a crazy person. But now you're calm."

He laughed a little. "That was because of the Rabbit quirk. It makes me act wild. I'm usually calm."

"Oh! I didn't know quirks could change you like that," she said.

They sat quietly for a moment.

Then Toru asked, "So, your quirk… you can copy other quirks?"

"Yes. If I touch someone, even just a little, I can copy their quirk. And I get to keep it forever."

"Wow! That's awesome. Do you have a lot of quirks right now?"

"I used to. But I deleted the weak ones. Now I only keep the good ones—one for strength, one for speed, one for support, and so on."

"That's smart," she said.

"What about you?" he asked.

She shrugged. "I'm just invisible. I have to sneak around and surprise the enemy. It's not strong."

"It's very useful," Neito said. "You stopped a robot without it seeing you. That's not easy."

She looked down at her gloves. "Thanks. If a smart person like you says so, it makes me feel better."

They sat quietly again. A bird landed near them, looked around, then flew away.

"I hope we both get into U.A.," Toru said.

Neito nodded. "We will."

She smiled. "If we do, maybe we can be in the same class. Let's stay in touch?"

He smiled too. "Sure."

A few days later…

Neito's U.A. message device arrived in the mail. It was now sitting on his desk.

He picked it up and looked at the screen.

A small image of All Might appeared.

[U.A. High School]

Congratulations, Monoma Neito. You passed the exam!

Rank: 1st Place

You are accepted into the Hero Course.

Neito stared at the screen.

"…I knew it," he whispered.

Then his phone buzzed again.

Toru: I GOT IN!! RANK 16!!!

Neito: Nice!

Toru: Want to meet before school starts tomorrow?

Neito: Yeah. Same place?

Toru: Okay!

The next morning, outside U.A. High School, the tall gates stood shining in the sun.

Two students stood together.

A blond boy with calm eyes.

And a girl—completely invisible. Only her clothes showed, and her shoes tapped gently on the ground.

"Let's go, Neito! Oh, and I got Class 1-A. What class did you get?" Toru asked.

Neito slowly opened his envelope. He looked at it with a blank face.
