The two of them went for a walk outside the cabin, and Wendy returned in high spirits, even humming a song. Seeing that her mood had improved, Evelyn Ford breathed a sigh of relief.
The next morning at six, the convoy didn't set off until the sky was bright. The road ahead was riddled with crisscrossing cracks and deep trenches. Many warning signs hung from the trees along the roadside. Some of the larger trenches had been partially filled with stones, and logs had been laid across them to allow vehicles to pass. The captain summoned those who had recently been causing trouble in the group and ordered them to scout ahead.
