Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: The Duke’s Silent Observation

From the shadows of the doorway, the Duke stood silently, arms crossed, eyes narrowed slightly. His white hair glimmered faintly in the morning light, blue streaks catching the sun. He had come to watch the celebration quietly, unseen by Ariya or even most of the staff.

The sound of small giggles and excited chatter floated through the hallway, and his sharp eyes followed every movement.

He paused when he saw her—Ariya—clutching every single object on the mat: the sword, the quill, the coin, the book, and the delicate crystal. All of them, cradled in her tiny arms.

The Duke's lips twitched—not quite a smile, but the barest trace of amusement.

She wants everything, he thought, his eyes studying her carefully. And she isn't even speaking yet. A bold child… or just reckless?

He observed as Nolan's jaw practically hit the floor. The four-year-old's voice trembled between disbelief and awe: "She… she grabbed all of them!"

The Duke's expression softened slightly. Curious… clever, too. That child might surprise me yet.

Lilian hovered nearby, carrying plates of cake. She caught sight of him and bowed politely. "Your Grace," she said softly. "The celebration… it's going well."

He inclined his head in acknowledgment, his gaze returning to Ariya. The way she clutched the items so protectively, with quiet confidence despite her fragile body… he couldn't look away.

There's something about her, he thought. Something beyond ordinary. Even for a duchess's child, she has… presence.

The Duke's mind wandered briefly. He had expected a quiet, obedient baby—something he could overlook while mourning the Duchess. But Ariya… she demanded attention, even in silence.

The way she stared at the cake, the way her fingers clutched each object… it wasn't mere childish curiosity. It was determination.

I will have to watch her closely, he mused, his sharp blue eyes flicking from her to the items she held. If she grows like this, she will not be ordinary. Not by a long shot.

Even as he remained in the shadows, something rare appeared in the Duke's expression: the barest hint of admiration.

And perhaps, a sliver of caution.

Meanwhile, Ariya's tiny mouth formed a small, triumphant "Agho!" as she took her first bite of cake. Her eyes sparkled. In that moment, the Duke realized she wasn't just surviving—she was already taking charge of her world, even in the smallest ways.

Interesting, he thought. Very interesting indeed.
