Chapter 4 - Fiend Hunting

"We are hunting it"

He turned towards her after hearing this. Clearly she didn't have any love for these beasts. And being a curious newborn he decided to ask her, "Why do you hate these creatures?"

Instead of answering him, she pointed her blade-turned-hand to the larger fiend who was still busy absorbing its prey,

"Look at its size. These pests do not grow this big by simply eating each other or other smaller aether creatures. This one has clearly killed many of our brethren. Some, if not all may have been newborns just like you. You are lucky that none of these passed by you when you were clumsily trying to walk."

The newborn simply stared at her and nodded his head in gratitude. He was indeed very lucky to have met Yvonne instead of them or something worse. He was about to express his appreciation when he noticed the blades. They were of the same colour as her body, milky white. These blades were at least 3ft long and 3 inches wide.

Once again he got curious and couldn't stop himself from asking, "How did you change your hands?"

"Aether" She kept staring at the distant fiend.

'I should have guessed it already by now. Aether is key to everything. I need to learn more about it.' He thought to himself.

Still keeping her eyes on the feeding beast, she addressed him through their mind link, "Whenever one of these fiends eat, their senses dull down. It takes them time to properly integrate the aether into their own bodies which leaves them in a poor defensive position. This is usually the perfect time to kill them. Now, remember what I told you, stay here and watch."

Her body once again broke off into many aether particles before joining together and traveling at a breakthrough speed.

As the fiend was feeding on the remains of its long dead prey, he felt an unbearable amount of pressure descend upon him but it was too late for him now.

Yvonne cut off several of its tentacles at once to prevent him from trying to defend itself and then went for its neck, cutting it cleanly in one measured strike, separating it from the body. With the aether core inside its head getting cut off, its body slowly started to go limp.

She transformed her hands into long strings which went out and took hold of the severed head, the body and various tentacles. She looked at the newborn and beckoned him to come closer after re-establishing the mind link.

"The best way to consume it, is to start with the head. This way you don't have to worry about retaliation. If you look closely you can see tiny aether strands trying to connect with the rest of its body." When he did take a closer look at the severed stump of its neck he saw several small strands trying to reconnect with their body, but were being held and absorbed by strings from Yvonne's hand.

"How do I eat it exactly? I tried to absorb it the way you taught me back there." He had tried to pull the aether from the beast directly but was unable to because he experienced resistance from the aether particles.

"You can only consume the aether that is in your surroundings, by the way I have taught you. But to consume the beast you have to grab it and eat the chunks directly from the body. We Gods are naturally stronger than fiends, so you won't face much difficulty eating it."

He looked at her in shock, "Won't it feel pain?"

"No, they are only semi-sentient and lack pain receptors. And before you feel sorry for it, this fiend has most likely killed and consumed many newborns who didn't know what it could do to them."

"Hurry up or the aether will start dispersing."

The young God hesitated for a moment before deciding to take a bite from its body. It met strong resistance from the outer layer of body before it gave way. He took out a huge piece of its head and gulped it down.

When the chunk reached his core her felt much better than he did after absorbing aether before. So he decided to take another chunk until he reached the core.

The resistance was much greater than it's body but he was able to break out a huge part of the core after applying pressure on it. When the part of the core got taken away, the remaining parts of its head started to violently shrink and feed off to the broken core. The core also started to vibrate and fill in the cracks it endured, until it became just half the size it previously was.

The broken core in his hands started to lose its shape and started to disperse. Watching this happen, the newborn quickly ingested it. When it reached his core he felt a strong shock traveling through his body and memories came flooding in with it.

*He saw a God looking at the fiend reaching near him, he had a puzzled expression. As the fiend came near him, the young God reached out to it. When he came in contact with its body he felt a powerful pull swallowing his hand. His shock turned into fear as the beast swallowed him whole*

"What was that!" The newborn was shocked by memories that came in. This was the first time he had seen something like this happen, even if it was a memory.

"These are the memories of this beast. They lack proper sentience and can't hold long time memories, which means they are recent. This fiend has killed many young Gods, as I told you." Yvonne was looking pitifuly at the horrified young God. She knew that only by experiencing something like this, can the newborn grow as a God.

Anger completely took over him as he heard her explanation. He was sorry for the young God he had seen earlier. He could still feel his shock and fear very clearly.

As he remembered the horrified expression of newborn, he started to tear out the core of the beast until nothing left. Then he went after its body and the several tentacles. He kept eating until nothing was left behind. Anger was radiating from his body which concerned the beautiful goddess, but she didn't interrupt him. She had the exact expression when she witnessed this happen.

As the body disappeared, the newborn slowly calmed down until he had himself under control. He looked at the goddess resolutely, "Thank you for saving me. Thank you for everything you have done for me."

She smiled as she saw the determination she had back then, on young God's face.
