Chapter 20 - Will David come?

All the guests had already arrived at the gate of the hall. Mr. and Mrs. Micawber were waiting for Dora and Lara. Just as they were about to go back inside to meet the other guests, Dora and Lara finally arrived.

Mrs. Micawber immediately moved towards Miss Dora and greeted her. A moment later, Mr. Micawber asked, "Where is David?"

"He's at home," she replied softly. "He'll come here by himself."

"Don't you guys worry—let's go inside," Miss Dora said excitedly.

The Micawbers, however, were still a little tense because of the sudden shock that David wasn't with them.

Meanwhile, David was still at home, deep in thought. His heart was heavy. He wasn't happy with this decision, but he had to go through with it—not for himself, but for the sake of little Harry.

He splashed cold water on his face, trying to steady his thoughts, and then headed toward his car. He began driving, but halfway there, he stopped in the middle of the road. After sitting still for a few moments, he made a sudden U-turn. Ten minutes later, he parked and stepped out.

He was now standing in front of the graveyard. With trembling hands, he bought some flowers from the vendor outside and slowly walked in.

For a long time, he couldn't bring himself to approach Maylie's grave. His heart ached with guilt—he felt he was betraying her memory. But finally, he gathered enough courage to step closer and kneel beside the grave. Tears welled up in his eyes.

"I know… you must be very angry right now," he whispered hoarsely. "But you know how much I love you. Nobody has the right to replace you."

After a pause, he continued, voice breaking, "I'm doing this… for the sake of our baby. For his future. And for Mom."

He bowed his head, placed the flowers gently on her grave, and after a few silent minutes, whispered, "Goodbye," before turning to leave.

Back at the hall, the Micawbers and Miss Dora were growing more anxious. It was already past one o'clock, and there was still no sign of David.

Kay, sitting on the bride's decorated couch, was making sour faces. Inside, she was burning with anger. Just as she stood up to storm out, David finally arrived, holding a file in his hand.

Miss Dora rushed toward him and wrapped him in a hug. "Where were you, dear? We've been waiting for you for the last two hours," she whispered.

"Mom…" David began, but Miss Dora interrupted him gently. "Don't waste time now. Come on, let's finish this."

They both walked up to the stage. Kay's eyes followed him, full of irritation, but he avoided looking at her. Mr. Micawber stepped forward and announced, "Everybody, pay your attention here—finally, the moment is here."

David and Kay exchanged rings. A loud cheer spread through the hall, filling the air. After the food and the greetings, guests began leaving one by one, congratulating them as they went.

Miss Dora said goodbye to the Micawbers and Kay, and soon everyone returned to their homes.

A few days later, Miss Dora asked David about his plans for the marriage. David replied coldly that he had no plans and begged her not to ask him about it again.

Meanwhile, the Micawbers were restless. They felt burdened by the responsibilities tied to this engagement and wanted to fulfill them as soon as possible.

Kay, on the other hand, had buried herself in work. One morning, she had a meeting scheduled with BJ at a restaurant where a property deal was to be discussed.

That morning, she woke up with a strange excitement in her steps. She took a long shower and chose a beautiful crop top with high-waisted pants. She applied a soft pink lipstick topped with white gloss and slipped on high heels. A watch on her wrist completed the look—she looked stunning.

Lily offered her breakfast, but Kay refused and stepped outside.

"Kay!" Mr. Micawber called from behind. She stopped, irritated. Now what does he want from me? I don't know how long I have to tolerate these two, she muttered under her breath, turning around.

"You forgot your phone inside," Mr. Micawber said, handing it to her.

She felt a flicker of shame, took the phone, and replied, "Bye, Dad."

BJ was already at the restaurant, waiting. BJ was a nice man—slightly flirty, but harmless.

He was seated in his office when Kay knocked.

"Ma'am, you don't need permission. Please, come in," he said, standing.

"Oh really? By the way, thank you," Kay replied with a smile.

"You're looking stunning today," BJ remarked.

"Just today?" she teased playfully.

"Oh, there's nothing like that," he said quickly.

"Just kidding. But thank you again," she added with a light laugh.

"Please, have a seat."

"Yeah, sure."

"Congratulations on your engagement," BJ said suddenly.

Kay froze, staring at him blankly. A deep silence filled the room until BJ clapped softly to bring her back.

"Ma'am?"

"Ah—thank you," she said finally, "but I haven't announced it yet. So I'm wondering… how did you know?"

BJ coughed lightly. "Actually, I just assumed. But I'm glad it's true."

"Assumed?"

"Yes. You're wearing a diamond ring on your love finger. What else could it mean?"

Kay forced a laugh. "Oh, I see. You're very sharp."

"So am I," BJ said with a grin.

Kay felt nervous—he already knew about her engagement, so flirting with him wouldn't work. Without wasting another minute, she shifted to business.

"Alright then. I've already seen the property. It's very good, and I like it. I'm ready for the deal. Prepare the documents—we'll confirm it at my place… someday."

"Okay. I'll let you know, ma'am. In this serious conversation, I forgot to ask—tea or coffee?"

"Actually, nothing. I have to be somewhere else."

"My bad," BJ said, making a cute face.

"No, my bad," she replied with a playful wink.

"Okay then," he said softly.

Kay stood up. "Bye."

She left the office, her heels clicking against the floor. BJ sat back, puzzled. Why was she acting so strange today? Maybe she didn't like me interfering in her personal life… or maybe… maybe not.
