Chapter 19 - Preparations for the engagement.

Kay was absolutely buzzing with excitement. Everything was unfolding perfectly—her engagement was finally happening, and that too without any real effort. It felt like the universe was working for her. Her parents were already on board, Miss Dora had agreed, and now all that remained was the celebration.

That afternoon, Mr. and Mrs. Micawber visited her at home. Kay wasn't there when they arrived, so Lily welcomed them in. She offered them tea and snacks while they waited, and they settled comfortably on the couch, watching a movie.

Kay rushed back as soon as she got Lily's call. As she stepped inside, she saw her parents relaxed, sipping tea. Smiling brightly, she said, "Good afternoon, everyone!"

After hugging her mother and father, she sat down, brimming with joy. But before she could even bring it up, Mrs. Micawber said:

"We've been thinking. We'll need to head back soon. So... we should finalize the engagement date."

Bingo. Once again, everything fell into her lap.

Mr. Micawber picked up the phone and called Miss Dora.

Phone Conversation:

Mr. Micawber: "Hello, this is Micawber."

Lara: "Oh! Hello, sir. One moment—I'll get Miss Dora."

Miss Dora (cheerfully): "Mr. Micawber, what a lovely surprise!"

Mr. Micawber: "Likewise. I was calling to speak about Kay and David's engagement. I have some pressing business to attend to, so we were hoping to set the date sooner."

Miss Dora: "Perfect timing. I was about to call you for the same reason! I've already started making arrangements."

Mr. Micawber: "Would this Saturday work for you?"

Miss Dora (without hesitation): "Absolutely! That's wonderful."

Mr. Micawber: "Then it's settled. This Saturday it is."

Miss Dora: "Please give my love to Mrs. Micawber—and to my lovely daughter-in-law!"

Mr. Micawber (smiling): "Of course. Take care."

Call ends.

"So? Are you happy now?" Mr. Micawber asked Kay.

"Dad… I can't even express how much! You're the best dad ever!" she squealed, putting on her most innocent face.

As they discussed the upcoming engagement, Kay asked about the rings. Mr. Micawber promised he'd take care of everything.

Later, Lily announced dinner. They all sat together, laughing, eating, acting like a perfect family. But beneath Kay's smiles was the same cold calculation:

"Everything's falling into place. No effort. No guilt. Just rewards. Maybe God just really likes me," she thought, smirking quietly.

The next few days flew by. Shopping, salon visits, fittings—Kay had it all. Her mother spared no expense. Mr. Micawber, though emotionally wounded, was generous and soft-hearted as always.

Now it was Friday night.

Everything was set. The decorations, the catering, the guest list. Kay couldn't wait.

And finally, Saturday morning.

She woke up at 10 AM to find 10 missed calls from her father.

"Ugh, what now? These oldies better not have messed something up," she groaned, rubbing her eyes.

She called back, apologizing. Her father urged her to get ready quickly—there was just one hour until the ceremony.

Kay jumped out of bed, yelling for Lily to bring her dress. She bathed, styled her hair, and painted her face with shimmering silver eyeshadow and mauve lipstick. Her silver gown hugged her figure, and her slit teased just enough skin beneath her six-inch heels.

Lily gasped when she saw her.

"You look like a star, ma'am," she whispered.

Soon, Mr. and Mrs. Micawber arrived to pick her up, beaming with pride. And together, they headed for the big event.

Meanwhile, at the Stevenson Mansion:

Lara had already dressed little Harry. He looked like a tiny prince in his formal outfit.

Miss Dora, checking every last detail, marched down the hallway to wake David.

When she opened his bedroom door—

He was still asleep.

"David! Wake up, it's your engagement day!" she barked.

He groaned, sat up, and ran a hand through his messy hair.

"Relax, Mom. Just give me twenty minutes."

True to his word, David stepped out in twenty-five—dressed immaculately in a black tailored suit, his watch glinting as he adjusted his cufflinks. He looked every bit the billionaire bachelor.

"I'll come alone," he said flatly.

Miss Dora paused, then nodded. "Fine. We'll meet you there."

She, Lara, and Harry left in the car with the driver.

But David?

He stood at the gate, watching them drive off…

Then turned around…

And walked back into the house.

DAVID WAS STILL AT HOME.

The clock was ticking.

The guests were arriving.

The bride-to-be was glowing.

And the groom?

He hadn't even left.

Something was wrong.

Something big was coming.

And Kay had no idea.
