Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: Qualifier

The solo qualifier arena was somewhere I didn't recognize from anywhere in Astia. One second I was in a waiting room with a hundred other nervous-looking avatars, the next the system swept me away somewhere else. A floating platform, surrounded by stone pillars, the sky the wrong color, a horizon that didn't quite meet where it should.

**Wave Survival - One Player Only. Last as long as you can. Top 500 by wave cleared advance to Gauntlet Stage."**

The answer is no. And it's a big no. Out of the blue. Only a count-down.

 **5... 4... 3...**

I considered messaging the party chat, a final "wish me luck" before the timer ran out, but there wasn't time and truthfully, I didn't need it. I knew what Dario would have said about not throwing my weapon at anything this time and what Tommy would have said that didn't make sense until wave twelve, and that was enough to carry with me without actually reading it.

**...1... Go.**

Easy as pie was wave one. Less so wave five. By wave twelve I'd stopped counting enemies carefully, and started just reacting, the way training apparently rewired you to if you did it enough -- Rally triggering itself half-instinctively now, whenever my HP dipped low, the grey-and-gold Vanguard armor taking hits that would've ended a lesser build twice over.

Wave twenty was when it stopped being a game I was winning, and became a game I was surviving.

Wave 20: Elite enemy sighted.

What had landed on the platform was not like anything from the starter zone. Armored, at least three times my height, with what looked less like a weapon and more like a small building. An hour ago my HP seemed generous, but now it looked pretty small.

[HP: 340/900]

There was no party for me to bait. No Sana healing me from a distance. No Tommy jumping in front of a bullet for me. No Dario coming up from behind. And me. An armor set that the game's database said didn't exist. And a title that had felt like a joke until this very moment.

*The One Who Will Not Know When to Quit.*

I let my guard down on purpose, took a hit I didn't need to take, watched my HP fall below the 15% threshold that Vanguard cared about.

**[Last Stand Activated - Immunity: 3 secs]**

It doesn't take long to spend three seconds. Apparently it was long enough to land one perfect blow with a rare hatchet that had once been worth throwing away on a boar I had no business fighting.

**[Critical Attack!]**

**[Elite Foe Defeated!]**

[Wave 20 Clear]

The platform continued to move. Wave twenty-one began immediately. No time to breathe, no time for a victory lap. But something had changed, not in the difficulty, which continued to rise as brutally as ever, but in me. I was not panicking anymore. I was doing the math. Every low-HP trigger, every Rally window, every gap between the end of one wave and the start of another, all of it falling into a rhythm that felt less like luck and more like something I had earned.

I lasted until wave thirty-four before the qualifier finally got me — not a death, exactly, as the system just faded the platform out from under me the moment my HP hit zero, dropping me back into the waiting room with a notification waiting.

**"Qualifier met. Final Wave Achieved: 34. Server Rank: #12 out of 3847 participants."**

12th. Of almost four thousand players, on a class the game's own systems didn't even officially acknowledge, I'd finished twelfth.

I sat with that number for a long moment before the message notifications started flooding in. Dario, Alex, Sana, Tommy. All asking at once. All in caps. Just as I was about to reply to them, a new notification slid in over the others, in a format I hadn't seen before. Not of the system. Not a playmaker.

**Private Message - Unknown Sender: Your class. We need to talk. "Come to the fountain. "Come alone."

*Continuation...*
