"Did you call me last night? Do you remember?"
He knew the young woman had drunk too much, but Amos Smith still asked her deliberately.
Call? When did that happen?
Could it be that she called him when she was drunk last night? Did she...?
"I-I don't remember. Did I say anything on the phone?"
Bertha Haines cautiously probed, feeling a mix of nervousness and a little apprehension, worried she might have said something she shouldn't have.
Amos started teasing her: "You said you liked me and you didn't want me to be with other women."
Bertha's mind went blank with a loud buzz.
This is bad, really bad.
Was she crazy to say that to Amos!
"I-I might have... dialed the wrong number. Maybe that's it. How could I say that to you? It must have been a mistake."
In her panic, Bertha started speaking incoherently.
Amos initially just wanted to tease her, but he didn't expect the girl to say something he didn't like.
"Dialed the wrong number? Who were you trying to call then?"
