Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: Sebastian Page Drowned

Bertha didn't cry.

Because the Norris Family didn't deserve her tears at all.

But getting evicted by the Norris Family still left her feeling very upset, so she shamelessly went, based on memory, to the amusement park owned by the Smith Family.

Amos Smith just finished a dinner and was about to head back to the company when Manson reported to him.

"Miss Norris went to the amusement park again."

Just so happened they were nearby, and after hesitating for a while, he instructed the driver to take them to the amusement park.

Mr. Mill, who was in charge of guarding the amusement park, told him that the young lady had been there for more than half an hour, sitting dazedly on the carousel and not playing any other facilities.

She seemed to be in a rather bad mood.

But the young lady was very alert; as soon as he entered, she noticed him and eagerly ran over to him, picking up her phone to start typing.

"I can understand."

Bertha was a bit surprised.

Amos looked up at the Ferris wheel and then asked her, "Do you want to ride the Ferris wheel?"

Bertha hesitated, pondering for quite a while before looking up and asking him in return: [Will you ride?]

Amos didn't initially plan to ride, but when he saw the expectant look in the young lady's eyes, he somehow ended up giving a positive answer.

However, the cabin of the Ferris wheel seemed a bit cramped for him.

He didn't particularly like such enclosed and small spaces, and it seemed the young lady noticed it, so she started trying to distract him.

[I have to report to school tomorrow and will be living there from now on.]

It was clear that the young lady was very excited.

He then asked her regarding her future plans: "What major do you plan to study?"

The young lady thought about it seriously, her lively eyes twinkling.

[I like drawing, so any major related to it would be fine. I haven't decided on the specifics yet.]

He wasn't surprised, as her grandfather was a famous painter.

"Do you have any sketches?"

The young lady quickly took out a sketchbook from her backpack, feeling a bit shy as she handed it to him.

[It's not very good, don't make fun of me.]

"I won't."

He stifled a grin and, opening the sketchbook, flipped through the pages.

He didn't understand art, but he could see that the young lady had talent in this area, especially since she had never studied art yet could draw things so vividly.

"Your grandfather is a painter, quite famous in the country."

"It seems you inherited from him, very talented. With some guidance from a master, you'd surely make achievements in the future."

The young lady blushed with shyness from the compliment.

He also turned to the last page, where there was a portrait. Though only the head and eyes were drawn, he still recognized it.

"Is the person in this portrait...me?"

The young lady quickly took back the sketchbook from his hands and closed it in a fluster.

[You've taken me home twice and brought me to the amusement park. You're a good person.]

[I wanted to thank you but didn't know what gift to give. Since the money I have is from my parents, buying a gift with their money felt insincere, and the only thing I'm good at is drawing.]

His first thought was: the young lady knows how to be grateful.

"Then why didn't you finish it?"

The young lady didn't answer, but he roughly understood the reason. After all, they had only met twice.

"I can model for you now, so you can finish the part you haven't drawn yet."

He had a compulsion; seeing a half-done drawing was extremely uncomfortable for him.

The young lady hesitated for a few seconds, then, upon realizing, a smile spread across her face.

*

Beautiful things always make people habitually take a few more glances, sometimes unable to look away.

Bertha held the sketchbook with her left hand, a pencil with her right, her gaze moving across Amos Smith's face.

This man seemed to be a favorite of the creator, otherwise how could his features be so handsome.

His facial lines were clear and smooth, with all his features forming sharp angles, adding a sharpness to his entire face.

His Adam's apple was very pronounced.

His shoulders were wide.

Perhaps due to his good build, faint muscle lines showed through under his white shirt.

This man was simply too perfect.

Good-looking, wealthy, and most importantly, a good person.

It's just unknown what kind of woman this wonderful man would marry in the future to become his wife.

The Ferris wheel had gone around several times, and Bertha finally finished drawing. After writing her name in the bottom right corner, she tore it off and handed it to him.

[This drawing is for you.]

Amos reached out to take it, glanced at it, and seemed very pleased.

"I'll keep this drawing. Who knows, it might become a masterpiece of a well-known artist in the future."

Bertha's cheeks blushed at his words.

Little did she know, her future path would completely diverge from that of an artist.

The amusement park seemed to have some magic; she came with a heavy heart and left with all her worries gone.

She declined Amos's offer to have someone escort her, rode a shared bike into the breeze towards Fleur Park, only to find someone attempting suicide by jumping into the river on the way back.

It was a mother and child; who knows what drove them to despair.

A circle of people had already gathered by the river, but few were able to swim.

At this time, two young men suddenly leaped down, their side profiles looked somewhat familiar.

It was Sebastian Page!

But the woman who jumped into the river seemingly had no desire to survive. When Sebastian tried to save her, not only did she not cooperate, but she also flailed helplessly.

The river surface and the bank had a certain height difference, so to save someone, you had to swim to the nearest steps with the person.

Seeing Sebastian drink several mouthfuls of water because of the woman, Bertha directly threw her backpack on the ground and jumped over the stone railing into the water.

Her swimming skills were excellent, and she quickly swam to the woman.

With Sebastian's help, she successfully hooked her arm around the woman's neck from behind and started towing her towards the nearest steps.

After delivering the woman to the steps, someone shouted.

"Quick, quick...the boy is drowning!"

She turned back at the sound, but Sebastian's figure was nowhere to be seen.

As a professional corpse collector, based on her years of experience, she swam to where Sebastian sank and took a deep breath before diving in.

The river was very deep, several meters at least.

And Sebastian was already gradually sinking.

If it had been someone else, they might have fainted from lack of oxygen before they could get him up, but her lung capacity was large, able to hold her breath for more than six minutes.

*

Just as everyone thought the two of them were done for, Bertha's head popped up from the river surface first.

She took a deep breath, then dragged Sebastian towards the steps.

"Thank goodness, they're finally up."

"This young lady must be from the swim team; her lung capacity is amazing, stayed underwater for two to three minutes."

After bringing him ashore, she reminded one of Sebastian's friends who had jumped in with him.

[Give him CPR.]

The other party understood what she meant but unfortunately had no knowledge of even basic first aid.

"I...I don't know how."

Left with no choice, she had to push him aside and help Sebastian perform CPR.

Sebastian spat out a few mouthfuls of water but remained unconscious.

So, Bertha forcibly pried his mouth open and started giving him artificial respiration.

To her, the current Sebastian was no different from the people she had previously salvaged from the river; after all, her first kiss was long sacrificed to some unknown drowning victim.
