Chapter 18 - Chapter 16 Modern Medicine

The procurement team from Azaenn Castle came and went in a hurry.

Their original plan was to stay in the city for two days and have some fun.

Who knew this incident would occur. Lin Ke's mother lost interest in sightseeing.

Lin Ke, too, had no mind to wander around. She was thinking about the issues with the guard team, eager to bolster their strength.

Perhaps it's a leftover fear of insufficient firepower from a previous life.

So the servants of the procurement team quickly and orderly completed their shopping and returned home, thanks to their extensive procurement experience.

...

At night, outside the castle, it was brightly lit.

"Rabbitman? Ha, a short-lived and weak race, perhaps you should find another follower."

That's the lady's harsh and unpleasant judgment.

After making her comment, the lady turned up her nose and left, claiming she was going to see her dear friends.

Knicks clenched his fists but did not react, instead silently following behind Lin Ke.

Lin Ke ignored the lady's words.

"Young master, can the rabbitman follower be placed in the room next to John's?" Butler Billy always cared about practical matters, although he seemed ill, appearing a bit pale.

"Yes, that's fine." Lin Ke nodded, then asked with concern, "Uncle Billy, are you ill?"

Billy shook his head: "No, it's just that I got hit in my chest a few days ago and it's a bit painful, cough cough cough…"

As he spoke, Billy coughed a few times.

Lin Ke immediately went over and rubbed Billy's chest. Billy was very happy but still gently pushed Lin Ke away: "Young master, about the compensation for the injured guards…"

Lin Ke nodded: "Yes, as I promised, it must be given, John knows about this."

Then Lin Ke pointed upwards: "Uncle Billy, remember to take care of my mother, make her a cup of lucky flower tea, she was greatly frightened this time."

Lucky flowers are small blooms that calm the mind and aid sleep.

After speaking, Lin Ke instructed John to follow Butler Billy into the castle to handle the aftermath for the guards.

The responsibilities of a butler often include multiple roles such as accounting, domestic affairs, diplomacy, procurement, and so on.

John now had much to learn from Billy since the future Viscount Azanen, Lin Ke, would rely on the butler.

Lin Ke then turned to Knicks: "Knicks, you did the right thing just now; often it's best not to speak out of turn."

Throughout the journey, Lin Ke had shared some general things about the castle with Knicks, so Knicks could endure the lady's venomous remarks.

Otherwise, according to Knicks' tribe customs, duels were prevalent, or rather, they were common across the tribes south of the Great Swamp.

If it weren't for Lin Ke today, the four-month-old Knicks might have to learn about dueling.

Fortunately, Knicks understood that human society was very complex, much more so than tribal relations.

He would need to learn a lot more in the future.

"Let's go, Knicks, let's go visit the wounded soldiers." Lin Ke walked towards the first floor of the castle, bringing Knicks with him.

The clueless Knicks followed along.

"This place is… so… so big!" Knicks exclaimed with wonder as he entered the castle.

"Can't you think of any other adjectives?" Lin Ke chuckled.

From far away, even before reaching the castle, Knicks had been full of praise, although his description was limited to "so big" and "so beautiful" and such.

The words of loyalty he swore before weren't unique; even rabbitmen had to learn them at the age of two months in their tribe.

Given the low ceiling of the Rabbitman Race, most rabbitmen who ventured outside their tribal life had to seek strong patrons, so learning vows of loyalty was important.

"What are adjectives?" Knicks asked foolishly, losing the decisiveness and composure he had earlier in the day.

Lin Ke smiled and didn't explain: "You'll understand in time."

He walked ahead, while Knicks scratched his head, his long ears twitching before he hurried to follow.

The guards lived on the first floor of the castle, but there were no "medical rooms"; the wounded soldiers slept on shared bunks.

The air inside was humid, filled with the stench of mold, sweat, foot odor, and even urine!

Upon entering, Lin Ke frowned, the smell was overpowering!

Knicks' upright ears drooped as he covered his nose in silence.

There were thirty beds in the room, which was its capacity, and all were bunk beds.

There were three layered wooden bunks reaching up to the ceiling!

The bedding appeared dull and grimy, obviously unwashed for who knows how long, and mold could be seen in the dim firelight.

It seemed that, in the future, some attention should be given to the servants' living conditions if possible… Lin Ke sighed inwardly.

Anyone who had lived in the prosperity of a previous life would lament such a prison-like environment.

Especially considering that the slaves here lived even worse off than the guards.

A healthy and strong body could do more for him!

"It seems this place needs to be refurbished or simply set up a shelter outside." Lin Ke instinctively said.

Butler Billy and John, who were often by his side, would typically ask empathetically, "Should we set it up now?" or "How many should we build?" to implement the idea.

However, following him now was Knicks, so Knicks asked curiously, "Why?"

Lin Ke continued instinctively, "Because the air here doesn't circulate, it's warm and humid, which easily breeds bacteria. Normally, people can easily get sick from it, and if they're injured, it's even easier for the wounds to get infected."

Knicks looked at Lin Ke with admiration: "Mr. Lin Ke, you know so much!"

Lin Ke didn't say much, these were just common knowledge in modern medicine, including things like having to boil water before drinking.

But…

It seemed like there wasn't modern medicine here?

Thinking of this, Lin Ke looked at Knicks with interest, particularly scrutinizing Knicks' body.

The rabbitmen here were similar to rabbits from his past life in many ways, one being their love for cleanliness.

Though Knicks had just experienced a flight for his life, his fur was still white.

"Do you want to learn? Some ways to heal others — if you do, follow me tomorrow and I'll teach you." Lin Ke asked tentatively.

Modern medicine!

Here, Lin Ke only knew of entities similar to priests and witch doctors, akin to ancient times in his previous life when traditional Chinese medicine was in its early stages.

And they relied more on mysterious powers, the power of occupations.

For instance, his mother had once knelt for a day and night before a witch doctor to treat him when he was a child, fainting before moving the witch doctor to treat Lin Ke.

This was why Lin Ke was gradually coming to terms with his mother from his past life.

However, thinking about it now, that witch doctor back then might have been a professional too!

"Learning? Learning from Mr. Lin Ke? Sure! Medicine and helping others! Sure~"

Initially excited, Knicks then seemed touched by a sad memory, tears suddenly flowing again: "My mom died last year due to illness. The only [witch doctor] in our tribe was not there at the time, sob sob sob…"

"Hope she can return to your ancestors' embrace." Lin Ke patted Knicks' shoulder helplessly, not saying much more.

His current thoughts were on medicine; if modern medicine could be introduced here, perhaps many cases of injury, disability, and death could be reduced.

A well-trained soldier dying from a cold rather than on the battlefield would be utterly foolish.

"Then let's make do with this place for today." Lin Ke and Knicks exited the stinking room.

The servants and guards were still outside moving items and hadn't returned. It was late now, so a simple place for the wounded could only be set up tomorrow.

After all, there were many people, and it wouldn't be too much trouble; just a simple setup would suffice.

"Let's go, Knicks. By the way, you're sure you're interested in medicine, right?"

"Yes, I am, sir."

ps: Monthly tickets and recommendation votes, please give me some. The child hasn't had tickets for three days, begging you~
