They did not move.
Not at first.
Zane's body went still the moment the shape revealed itself at the far end of the street. Every instinct that had been pushing him forward now pulled him into control.
Not fear.
Control.
Lena's grip tightened on his sleeve, but she did not speak. She felt it too. The change in the air. The pressure of something watching without moving.
The creature remained in place.
Partially hidden between two buildings, its outline broken by shadow and fading light.
Zane lowered himself slowly, guiding Lena with him behind the frame of a damaged car nearby. The metal was dented, one side scraped badly, but it gave them enough cover.
"Do not look directly for too long," he whispered.
Lena nodded quickly, her breathing shallow.
Zane adjusted his position slightly, looking through the cracked window of the car.
He observed.
The creature did not rush.
It did not twitch.
It simply stood there with a stillness that felt intentional.
Wrong.
Too aware.
Its shape was unclear, but it was larger than a human in that posture. Its back was uneven, rising slightly as if something beneath its skin was not aligned properly.
Then it moved.
Slow.
Measured.
A shift of weight.
Its head turned slightly, scanning across the street.
Zane's eyes narrowed.
It was not hunting blindly.
It was aware.
That made it worse.
A distant crash echoed somewhere behind them.
The creature reacted instantly.
Its body tightened.
Then, without warning, it moved.
Not fast.
But controlled.
It slipped out of the shadow, crossed the street low to the ground, and disappeared between buildings.
Gone.
Zane did not relax.
He waited.
Five seconds.
Ten seconds.
Nothing followed.
Only distant chaos remained.
He exhaled slowly.
"It is gone," Lena whispered.
"For now," Zane replied.
He stood carefully, scanning again.
The light had dropped further.
The sun was lower.
Shadows stretched across the road, swallowing detail and breaking familiar shapes into uncertainty.
Everything felt less stable.
Zane's jaw tightened slightly.
"Night will be worse."
Lena looked at him.
"What do you mean?"
"We will see less," Zane said.
She swallowed.
"But they will not."
Zane did not respond.
"Come," he said.
They moved again.
Slower now.
More controlled.
Zane stayed close to walls, avoiding open areas. He no longer followed crowds or obvious paths.
He chose his movement.
Lena followed closely, adjusting without question.
That was new.
The chaos around them had thinned.
Fewer people.
More silence.
And that silence felt wrong.
Zane's eyes kept moving.
Every alley.
Every doorway.
Every broken window.
He was reading everything now.
Then he saw it.
A small shop ahead.
Glass shattered inward.
Door slightly open.
Dark inside.
He slowed.
"That place," he said.
Lena followed his gaze.
"You think it is safe?"
"No."
He stepped forward.
"But it is better than outside."
They approached carefully.
Zane stopped just before the entrance.
He listened.
Nothing.
No movement.
No sound.
Stillness.
Too still.
He pushed the door slightly wider.
It creaked.
Both of them froze.
They waited.
Nothing reacted.
Zane stepped inside first.
Lena followed immediately.
The air inside was stale.
Dust hung in the air like a thin veil.
Shelves stood half empty, items scattered across the floor. Some had fallen during chaos. Others had clearly been taken in a rush.
Zane pulled the door almost closed.
Not fully.
Just enough to reduce visibility.
He moved deeper inside.
Checking corners.
Blind spots.
Back area.
Nothing.
Empty.
For now.
Lena stayed near the front.
"It is quiet," she whispered.
Zane moved back toward her.
"Stay away from the entrance."
She nodded and moved further in.
No hesitation.
No argument.
That trust was growing.
Zane noticed it.
And kept it in mind.
They settled without relaxing.
Zane positioned himself where he could see both the entrance and the interior.
Control.
Even if limited.
Outside, faint sounds still existed.
Distant shouting.
Something breaking.
Movement in the far distance.
Inside, there was only silence.
Their breathing became louder in that silence.
Time stretched.
Lena sat slowly against a shelf.
Her hands trembled slightly.
But she stayed quiet.
Zane remained standing.
Listening.
Thinking.
Nothing about this situation felt random.
That meant more was coming.
A faint sound interrupted the silence.
Zane turned instantly.
"…did you hear that?" Lena whispered.
He raised his hand slightly.
Listen.
The sound came again.
Scratch.
Pause.
Scratch.
From deeper inside the shop.
Not outside.
Inside.
Zane's body went still.
The sound shifted position.
Closer.
Then stopped.
The silence that followed felt heavier.
Because now they knew.
They were not alone.
Zane moved slowly.
One step at a time.
Toward the source.
Lena followed closely.
The back of the shop was darker.
Shadows filled the corners between shelves.
Zane stopped.
Listening.
Nothing.
Then movement.
Fast.
Low.
A shape burst from beneath a fallen shelf.
Zane reacted instantly.
He stepped back and pulled Lena with him.
The creature lunged.
Small.
But wrong.
Its body was twisted, its movement sharp and aggressive. Its eyes reflected dim light in a way that did not feel natural.
A rat.
But not normal.
It lunged again.
Zane grabbed a broken piece of wood from the floor and struck.
The impact landed.
The creature was knocked sideways.
But it recovered immediately.
Too fast.
It turned again.
Lena stepped back.
"Zane!"
"Stay back!"
It lunged again.
Zane adjusted his stance.
This time he struck earlier.
Harder.
The wood connected cleanly.
The movement stopped.
The body slid across the floor and became still.
Silence returned.
Lena stared at it.
"…that was a rat."
Zane did not respond immediately.
He looked at it.
Then something changed.
A faint distortion appeared above the dead creature.
Not light in a physical sense.
Something visible only to perception.
A pale green structure formed slowly in the air above it.
Like threads.
Like veins of energy suspended in space.
Lena stepped back slightly.
"What is that…"
Zane did not answer.
His eyes stayed fixed.
The structure did not move toward them.
It did not react.
It simply existed.
Floating.
Alive in a way that did not belong to matter.
Then it faded slowly, dissolving into the air until nothing remained.
Zane's gaze narrowed.
This was not normal.
But it was not something they could touch.
Not yet.
He lowered his focus back to the room.
"We stay alert," he said quietly.
Lena nodded immediately.
Outside, the light continued to fade.
And inside the shop, the silence no longer felt empty.
It felt occupied.
