Chapter 8 - CHAPTER 8 — THE SOUND IN THE WALLS

The scratching resumed agai.

At first, it came in short bursts.

A faint scrape.

Then silence.

Then another.

But as the seconds stretched, the pattern began to change.

It grew steadier.

Closer.

Zane stood still, his head slightly tilted as he listened.

Not just hearing.

Separating.

One sound from another.

There was more than one source.

Behind the walls.

Beneath the floor.

Somewhere to their left.

Another behind them.

Not random.

Spread out.

Lena's breathing tightened beside him.

"What is that…" she whispered.

Zane did not answer immediately.

Because he already understood.

But saying it made it real.

"They are moving together," he said quietly.

Lena's fingers tightened.

"Together…?"

Zane's eyes moved slowly across the room.

"Yes."

That was the problem.

Not scattered.

Not confused.

Coordinated.

---

A sharp crack sounded from the far side of the room.

Zane turned instantly.

The floor had split slightly, a thin line forming across the surface.

For a moment, nothing moved.

Then something pushed through.

A snout.

Teeth.

The body followed, forcing its way out with unnatural strength.

A rat.

Smaller than the one before.

But faster.

Its eyes locked onto movement immediately.

Zane moved first.

The wood in his hand came down hard.

The impact connected.

The rat dropped.

But he did not relax.

Because the sound did not stop.

---

Another crack.

Then another.

Different points in the room.

More openings.

More movement pushing through.

Lena stepped back instinctively.

"They are coming from everywhere…"

Zane shifted his stance.

"Stay behind me."

His voice was calm.

Firm.

Final.

Lena obeyed instantly.

---

The scratching grew louder.

Faster.

Small fragments of debris fell as pressure built from inside the walls and floor.

Then they came.

One.

Three.

More.

The rats did not rush blindly.

They spread out.

Each one moving with purpose.

No collision.

No confusion.

Zane narrowed his eyes slightly.

They were surrounding.

---

The first lunged.

Fast.

Low.

Zane stepped aside and struck.

The rat hit the ground and twitched.

Another came immediately.

From a different angle.

Zane adjusted.

Too close.

It brushed past his leg.

A sharp sting followed.

A shallow cut.

He ignored it.

Position mattered more than pain.

---

More rats closed in.

Lena's breathing shook.

"Zane…"

"Do not move forward," he said.

She froze.

Forced herself to stay still.

---

Zane's movements changed.

More precise.

More controlled.

Each strike was deliberate.

Each step placed carefully.

He was not trying to eliminate them all.

He was controlling space.

Anything that crossed into it was dealt with.

---

A rat leapt higher this time.

Zane reacted instantly.

He struck mid-air.

It dropped.

But another came right after.

Faster.

It grazed his arm.

Another shallow cut.

His grip tightened slightly.

Still steady.

Still controlled.

---

"Move back," he said.

Lena stepped back immediately.

Zane moved with her.

Slowly.

Maintaining distance.

Reducing angles.

The room was too open.

Too many entry points.

He needed control.

---

"Left."

They shifted toward a collapsed section of the wall.

Debris created a partial barrier.

Better.

Fewer directions to defend.

The rats followed.

But their movement slowed slightly.

Not fear.

Adjustment.

Zane noticed.

They were thinking.

---

Then something new.

Footsteps.

Fast.

Human.

Zane turned toward the hallway.

A figure stumbled into view.

A boy.

Same age range.

Clothes torn.

Breathing hard.

He froze when he saw them.

Then saw the rats.

His face changed instantly.

"Help—"

A rat lunged toward him.

Too fast.

Zane moved.

The wood struck down.

The rat dropped just before reaching him.

The boy stared.

Shock.

Confusion.

---

"Come here," Zane said.

No hesitation.

The boy moved immediately.

Almost slipping.

He reached them and pressed against the wall.

"What are those things—"

"Quiet."

The boy stopped speaking.

---

The rats shifted again.

Now three targets.

Their formation widened.

Testing.

Zane adjusted his stance.

"Stay close. Do not move out."

Both nodded.

---

Another wave came.

Faster.

Closer.

Zane's movements sharpened.

Strike.

Step.

Adjust.

No wasted motion.

The boy flinched at every movement but stayed in place.

Fear held him there.

Zane's control kept him alive.

---

One rat slipped through.

It rushed toward Lena.

Zane reacted instantly.

He stepped across and struck.

The rat dropped just before reaching her.

Lena did not scream.

But her breathing trembled.

---

Then something changed.

The rats slowed.

Not stopping.

But pulling back slightly.

Their formation loosened.

Zane noticed immediately.

Something had shifted.

---

A faint pressure in the air.

Subtle.

But familiar.

Zane felt it.

The same presence from before.

Outside.

The hunter.

Not entering.

But near.

Watching.

The rats felt it too.

Their behavior changed.

Less aggressive.

More cautious.

Zane understood.

Even predators reacted to something above them.

---

"Now," Zane said.

"Move."

He stepped forward first.

Breaking formation.

The rats hesitated.

That moment was enough.

They moved.

Out of the room.

Into the hallway.

The boy followed quickly.

Lena stayed close behind Zane.

---

They did not stop until they reached a deeper section of the building.

Zane slowed.

Listened.

The scratching behind them faded.

Not gone.

But distant.

---

The boy leaned against the wall, breathing hard.

"What is happening…"

Zane did not answer.

Lena looked at him.

Then at Zane.

Waiting.

---

Zane's eyes moved once more.

Across the space.

Toward the darkness outside.

Night had deepened.

And something out there

Was still watching.

---

"We cannot stay here," Zane said.

This time, both of them understood.

Completely.

The building was not safe.

And outside

Was not better.

But it was where they had to go.
