"Ezekiel is more than his duty. You barely know him to make that conclusion. I could bring him over for dinner. You can ask him yourself. We've made plans together. They're not concrete but we've been talking."
She held up her hand to stop me, "No matter what he says I know how this will end up. With you heart broken and me having to pick up the pieces."
"You've never been there for me," I snapped, surprising myself, "You've barely seen me in the past five years. You hardly know me anymore and you can't dictate who I can fall in love with. You don't know anything about Ezekiel, Mama. Don't force my hand to choose. He comforted me when I arrived and you didn't want to stay because you couldn't face the music that your past with Baba had taken everything from us. If you had told me sooner I would have never had to grow up the way I did."
