'A phone call shouldn't take this long,' she thought. 'I hope nothing's wrong.' Feeling uneasy, she walked toward the study.
Before she even reached the door, Victor Morgan came out. Vera could tell at a glance that something was wrong with him.
"What's wrong? Who called? Did something happen?"
"It's nothing. Don't worry, just go to bed."
Victor didn't mention it to Vera. The whole situation was too complicated, and now wasn't the right time to bring it up. 'It's better to wait for the right opportunity to tell her,' he thought.
"What about you?"
"I'm going to take a shower first. I'll be right there."
Victor walked straight to another room to take a shower, hoping to wash away the faint smell of smoke clinging to him.
