Chapter 9 - Connotations

"You!" Mrs. Morgan immediately caught the implication in her words, her anger surging as she raised her voice, "Just as I thought, if the head of the family is crooked, the kids will follow. The elder's got no manners, so she raised this little brat with no manners, dragging my grandson into a place like this!"

"Mrs. Morgan, mind your words!"

Vera Warner's face went cold instantly. She respected the other as an elder, but that didn't mean she'd tolerate anyone insulting her daughter at will.

"The truth hasn't been uncovered yet, and Mrs. Morgan is here slandering me and my daughter. Seems the Morgan family's upbringing isn't much to brag about!"

"You..." Mrs. Morgan's face turned ashen with rage. Suddenly, she raised her arm and slapped hard toward Vera Warner.

The fierce wind from her slap rushed at her; Vera Warner was caught off guard, hadn't had time to react, when suddenly someone grabbed her arm and pulled her back.

She stumbled a few steps, falling into an embrace.

The cool scent of fresh grass enveloped her nose again, but this embrace was exceptionally warm, steadying Vera Warner's originally agitated heart in an instant.

Luna Warner saw Victor Morgan reach out and pull Vera Warner into his arms, and her face instantly became ugly.

She even saw a flash of confusion in Victor Morgan's eyes!

He really does treat Vera Warner differently!

She bit her lip, stepped forward, and pulled Vera out, looking pitiful as she accused, "Sister! How could you do this! The two kids are still being interrogated, and you're still in the mood to seduce Victor!"

"..."

Vera Warner sneered, "Which eye of yours saw me seducing him?"

"Sister." Luna Warner wiped at the corner of her eye, looking miserable, "I know you don't like me, if you've got any grievances, bring them at me. But don't drag the kids into it as revenge — they're young, don't let them ruin their lives here."

Well, good gracious.

Just now she said Vera wanted to marry into the wealthy family, now she's straight up pinning the accusation of framing the Morgan family's heir on her.

But what's she supposed to be after?

There's a child of her own in that interrogation room!

"People say even a tiger won't eat its cubs, you're a mother too, how can you say something like this?" Vera ridiculed, looking at Luna Warner as if she were an idiot.

Luna Warner's expression stiffened, and for a moment she felt guilty.

"President Morgan, the police have approved us to see the young master," the lawyer came over and whispered, breaking the tension between the two women.

Vera Warner instinctively took a few steps forward, "What about Luke?"

The lawyer glanced at Victor Morgan, waiting for his word.

Victor Morgan's gaze was deep as he looked at Vera, seeming to ponder something.

Vera Warner steadied the anxiety in her heart, gazing firmly at Victor, her eyes showing a hint of pleading, "Mr. Morgan, you've met Luke, she's not that kind of child, there must be some misunderstanding here."

Victor Morgan was slightly moved inside.

This woman had always been sharp-tongued and proud before him, but now she lowered herself, speaking sincerely.

She wasn't crying, but the urgency and worry in her eyes were so tangible he could almost touch them.

By contrast, Luna Warner's eyes were red, but there wasn't a trace of worry behind them.

The difference was clear.

In terms of manipulation, Luna was much more likely the type who could do something like this.

"Let's all go see them together." Victor Morgan nodded slightly, and strode off first.

Vera Warner let out a breath of relief and hurried to follow.

Luna Warner, lagging behind, dug her nails deep into her palm, gritting her teeth, wishing she could kill Vera right then and there.

As soon as she entered the interrogation room where Chloe Warner was, Vera Warner's long-restrained tears finally burst forth.

"Mom!" Chloe Warner sat on the chair, dirty and disheveled, but her hands were cuffed. Her wrists, small and thin, were tightly locked by the cold silver cuffs. Vera Warner's heart clenched in pain seeing it.

"Luke!" Vera Warner rushed over and hugged her daughter.

Chloe Warner's eyes were red too, but she broke into a wide grin to comfort Vera: "Mom, don't worry, I'm fine!"

"Good girl." Vera ran her hand over Luke's head, "Don't worry, Mom will get you out soon."

"Mm!" Luke nodded vigorously, then her face turned bitter, "But the café's security footage was destroyed. Otherwise, it'd prove Zola and I are innocent."

"What really happened?"

"Zola Morgan said Luna Warner invited her out, so the two of us went to the café, but a woman told us Luna was somewhere else and led us away. Then she fell down the stairs, and the police showed up."

Chloe Warner recounted the events clearly, then leaned in toward Vera and whispered, "Mom, Zola says Luna definitely set us up. Now I believe Luna isn't her real mom."

Vera Warner's expression turned icy.

She'd already suspected this incident was connected to Luna Warner, and now she was basically certain Luna was behind it!

If she wants trouble, Vera certainly won't let her get away with it!

"Ah—get away from me!" Suddenly, a scream of pain came from the next interrogation room where Zola Morgan was held.

For some reason, at that moment Vera Warner felt as if a pair of hands were squeezing her heart, her eyes stinging from the pain.

Without a second thought, she held Chloe and rushed to the adjacent interrogation room.

It was already a mess inside.

The tiny interrogation room was packed with people, while Zola Morgan was curled up in a corner, pulling at his hair and screaming.

He looked restless and agitated, tables and chairs overturned on the floor.

"Victor, what do we do, Zola's sick again!" Luna Warner covered her mouth, heartbreakingly throwing herself into Victor Morgan's arms.

But in the next instant, Victor Morgan shoved her away, his expression full of disgust and coldness: "Shut up!"

"President Morgan, does the young master have any mental illness? Like this, he could possibly hurt someone." The captain in uniform looked serious, growing more convinced of the charge of attempted murder.

Victor Morgan pressed his lips tightly, his gaze toward Zola Morgan filled with deep anguish.

"Let me try, I've studied child psychology!"

Vera Warner stepped forward, but Victor Morgan grabbed her with difficulty: "He could hurt you."

"He won't." Vera gave Victor a reassuring smile, brushed his hand aside, and carefully approached Zola Morgan.

"Zola, it's me," she called softly.

Zola Morgan in the corner was like a trapped beast, his small body curled into a ball, looking heartbreakingly vulnerable.

Luna Warner watched Vera approach Zola, contempt flashing in her eyes.

This little bastard had been sick since childhood, always going mad when triggered, attacking anyone during his episodes—even Victor himself had been bitten bloody several times.

Vera was overestimating herself.

But fine, let this little brat go crazy and bite Vera to death!

Mother and son tearing each other apart, what a show.

Luna Warner couldn't help but show a smile in her eyes, but the next second, her face froze!

Zola Morgan seemed to hear Vera's voice. He lifted his head, confusion and red eyes gazing at Vera.

Vera Warner approached him step by step, her face gentle and smiling.

Then she pulled him straight into her arms!

That warm, sweet scent entered his nose, and the embrace was gentle to the extreme, carrying a heart-piercing warmth.

Zola Morgan closed his eyes—this was just like how his mother appeared in his dreams.

He sobbed softly, and uttered, "Mom..."

The whole room was stunned!
