By Monday morning, Corporal Angelo Sanchez had almost forgotten about the incident.
Almost.
He had returned to his normal duties on Saturday.
Reports.
Patrols.
Briefings.
Training.
The ordinary rhythm of military life had quickly swallowed Friday afternoon.
The only reminder was the fading bruise along his jaw.
He was sitting in the operations room when his commanding officer entered.
"Corporal Sanchez."
Angelo stood.
"Sir."
"Come with me."
Angelo followed him into the commander's office.
The door closed behind them.
His commander remained standing.
"You were involved in an incident on Friday."
"Yes, sir."
"The robbery involving two foreign civilians."
"Yes, sir."
Angelo waited.
His commander picked up a folder from the desk.
"You said you didn't know who they were."
"I didn't, sir."
"That was true at the time."
Angelo frowned.
"At the time?"
His commander opened the folder.
"The man you rescued was King Adrian of Valoria."
Angelo stared at him.
For a moment, he thought he had heard incorrectly.
"Sir?"
"King Adrian."
Angelo slowly sat down.
The commander continued.
"The woman was Queen Elena."
Angelo said nothing.
He remembered the elderly couple.
The expensive clothes.
The composure.
The way the man had spoken.
Suddenly, several things made sense.
The strange confidence.
The security personnel who had arrived after the attack.
The man's insistence on knowing his name.
Angelo rubbed his jaw.
"I didn't know."
"We know."
"I would have handled it the same way."
His commander looked at him.
"I know."
Angelo looked down at the folder.
"Are they all right?"
"Yes. The King suffered a minor injury. The Queen was not seriously hurt."
Angelo nodded.
Relief came before anything else.
His commander noticed.
"You don't seem particularly impressed."
"Should I be?"
A faint smile appeared on the commander's face.
"You rescued a king."
"I rescued two civilians."
"Who happened to be a king and queen."
Angelo shrugged.
"They were still civilians when I found them."
His commander closed the folder.
"That attitude is probably why you're sitting here."
Angelo looked at him.
"What does that mean?"
"It means the government has received an official communication from Valoria."
Angelo's expression became cautious.
"About me?"
"About you."
Angelo leaned back.
"What do they want?"
"Nothing."
That surprised him.
"Nothing?"
"They want to thank you."
Angelo was silent.
His commander continued.
"There will be a formal communication between the two governments. Your name will probably appear in it."
Angelo immediately shook his head.
"I don't need recognition."
"I didn't say you did."
"I was doing my job."
"I know."
His commander placed the folder back on the desk.
"But whether you want attention or not, Corporal Sanchez, you may have it."
Angelo sighed.
That was the last thing he wanted.
---
Across the ocean, in the Kingdom of Valoria, the incident was already becoming public.
The King had initially wanted the matter kept private.
But a foreign monarch being attacked while travelling abroad was not something governments could easily conceal.
The official statement was carefully worded.
The King and Queen had experienced an attempted robbery while visiting Sanjara.
They were safe.
The Sanjaran authorities had responded quickly.
Three suspects had been arrested.
No further threat existed.
The statement did not mention Angelo.
That lasted less than twenty-four hours.
Someone had talked.
By Tuesday morning, newspapers were already carrying headlines.
VALORIAN KING AND QUEEN ATTACKED DURING PRIVATE VISIT TO SANJARA
THREE ARRESTED AFTER ATTEMPTED ROBBERY
And then another story appeared.
SANJARAN SOLDIER SAVES ROYAL COUPLE
Elena read it twice.
She sat at the breakfast table with the newspaper spread in front of her.
Her mother was drinking tea.
Her father was reading something on a tablet.
Elena looked up.
"You told me he wasn't looking for recognition."
The King glanced at her.
"He wasn't."
She tapped the newspaper.
"His face is on the front page."
The King smiled.
"That isn't his fault."
Elena studied the photograph.
It wasn't a particularly good photograph.
Angelo was standing beside the patrol vehicle, apparently taken from footage released by the Sanjaran authorities.
He looked younger than she expected.
Serious.
There was a bruise along his jaw.
Elena looked at the headline again.
"Corporal Angelo Sanchez."
Her mother glanced at the photograph.
"He looks very young."
"He's twenty-eight," the King said.
Elena looked at her father.
"How do you know that?"
"I read his file."
Her mother gave him a knowing look.
"You really did investigate him."
The King ignored her.
Elena smiled.
"Why?"
The King folded his hands.
"Because I wanted to know who saved us."
She looked back at the photograph.
There was nothing particularly remarkable about it.
Just a soldier.
A young man in uniform.
But she found herself wondering what kind of person he was.
"What did you find?"
The King hesitated.
"He has served for several years."
"Any trouble?"
"No."
"Ambitious?"
"Not particularly."
"Political?"
"No."
"Family?"
The King smiled.
"You're conducting an interrogation now."
Elena laughed.
"I'm curious."
"He's a professional soldier."
"That tells me very little."
"It tells me enough."
Her mother watched the exchange quietly.
Then she asked:
"Did he know who we were?"
"No."
"And now?"
"He knows."
Elena looked up.
"How did he react?"
The King smiled.
"Apparently, he was more concerned about whether we were injured."
Something about that answer stayed with Elena.
She looked again at the photograph.
The soldier was looking directly at the camera.
He didn't look like someone who wanted fame.
He looked like someone who had simply been caught in the middle of something.
Elena folded the newspaper.
"Perhaps we should invite him to Valoria."
The King looked at her.
The Queen looked at him.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then the King smiled.
"Perhaps."
Elena picked up her tea.
She had no idea that the suggestion would eventually become reality.
And she had no idea that the man in the photograph would one day stand across from her in person.
For now, he was simply a stranger.
A soldier from a country thousands of kilometres away.
A man who had saved her parents without knowing who they were.
And, for reasons Elena could not explain, she found herself wanting to know more about him.
