Chapter 3 - The Princess

The first thing Princess Elena noticed when her parents returned was that her father was limping.

It was slight.

Almost unnoticeable.

But Elena had known the King all her life.

She noticed.

She stood at the bottom of the palace steps as the royal convoy entered the courtyard.

The vehicles stopped one after another.

The doors opened.

Security personnel stepped out first.

Then came her mother.

Then her father.

Elena smiled.

"Welcome home."

The King opened his arms.

"There is my daughter."

Elena walked forward and embraced him.

He held her tightly.

For a moment, she was no princess.

He was simply her father.

Then she pulled away.

"You're hurt."

The King glanced down.

"It's nothing."

Elena looked at her mother.

The Queen immediately looked away.

"Mama?"

"Don't look at me."

Elena turned back to her father.

"What happened?"

"A minor incident."

"That sounds like something people say when they don't want me to ask questions."

The King smiled.

"You've become suspicious."

"I was raised by politicians."

The Queen laughed.

The King shook his head.

"Come inside."

They entered the palace together.

Elena walked between her parents, asking questions about their trip.

She had missed them.

Despite the privileges of royal life, the palace could sometimes feel strangely empty.

Her parents travelled frequently.

Her brother was away recovering from his injuries.

And Elena had become increasingly aware of how much of her life was controlled by schedules created by other people.

She wanted something different.

Something that belonged to her.

As they entered the main hall, Elena noticed several officials waiting nearby.

Their expressions were unusually serious.

She slowed.

"What happened?"

The King looked at them.

"Nothing that needs your attention."

Elena raised an eyebrow.

"That means something happened."

Her mother smiled.

"Your father will tell you when he is ready."

Elena sighed.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

The King placed a hand on her shoulder.

"Give me an hour."

She looked at him.

"Fine."

He kissed her forehead.

"And then you can interrogate me."

"Deal."

The King and Queen disappeared toward their private quarters.

Elena remained in the hall.

She watched them go.

Something was wrong.

She could feel it.

But she couldn't yet explain why.

---

An hour later, Elena was sitting in the palace library.

A book lay open on the table.

She had read the same paragraph three times.

She wasn't concentrating.

Her brother had been injured in battle several months earlier.

The official reports had repeatedly described his condition as improving.

The doctors were optimistic.

Her father was optimistic.

Her mother was optimistic.

Everyone was optimistic.

But Elena had learned something growing up inside a royal family.

People often said they were optimistic when they were afraid.

She closed the book.

The doors opened.

Her father entered.

"You're thinking too much."

"I learned from you."

The King smiled.

He sat opposite her.

"How is my son?"

Elena's expression softened.

"Still recovering."

"He's stronger."

"That's what the doctors say."

"And what do you say?"

Elena hesitated.

"I think he's trying to convince everyone that he's fine."

The King studied her.

"You've always understood your brother."

"He's terrible at pretending."

The King smiled.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Elena noticed something.

Her father's expression changed.

"What?"

He looked at her.

"What?"

"You're thinking about something."

The King leaned back.

"I met someone in Sanjara."

Elena blinked.

"A woman?"

Her father laughed.

"No."

"A man?"

"Yes."

Elena smiled.

"That sounds suspicious already."

"He is a soldier."

Her curiosity increased.

"A soldier?"

"Corporal."

"What did he do?"

The King was quiet for a moment.

"He saved your mother's life."

Elena's smile disappeared.

"What?"

The King explained what had happened.

The attack.

The three criminals.

The soldier who intervened without knowing who they were.

Elena listened silently.

"And he didn't know you were King?"

"No."

"What did he do when he found out?"

"He didn't."

Elena frowned.

"He still doesn't know?"

"No."

She stared at her father.

"How?"

The King smiled.

"Because I didn't tell him."

Elena shook her head.

"Why?"

"Because for those few minutes, I wasn't King."

He looked toward the window.

"I was simply an old man who needed help."

Elena smiled.

"That sounds like something you would say."

The King looked back at her.

"There was something else."

"What?"

"He didn't hesitate."

Elena waited.

"He saw civilians in danger and acted. He wasn't looking for recognition. He wasn't trying to impress anyone."

The King paused.

"He simply did his duty."

Elena leaned back.

"And now you're impressed."

"Very."

"What's his name?"

"Angelo Sanchez."

The name meant nothing to her.

Not yet.

"Where is he from?"

"Sanjara."

Elena nodded.

"A soldier from Sanjara."

"Yes."

She smiled.

"You're very interested in this Corporal Sanchez."

The King gave her a knowing look.

"I am interested in people who demonstrate character."

Elena laughed.

"Of course."

Her father stood.

"Get some rest tonight."

"Why?"

"Your brother is returning soon."

Elena's face lit up.

"When?"

"Within the week."

She stood immediately.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"I just did."

She hugged him.

For the first time that evening, the King smiled without reservation.

---

Later that night, the King stood alone in his study.

A file lay open on his desk.

CORPORAL ANGELO SANCHEZ

Military service.

Training.

Performance.

Disciplinary history.

Commendations.

The King read every page.

He wasn't searching for a husband for his daughter.

Not yet.

He wasn't thinking about succession.

He wasn't thinking about crowns.

He simply wanted to understand the young soldier who had protected him without knowing who he was.

The King closed the file.

Outside the study, the palace was quiet.

He looked at the photograph attached to the report.

A young African soldier stared back at him.

The King smiled faintly.

"Interesting man."

He had no idea how important that man would eventually become to his family.

And Angelo Sanchez had no idea that his name had just entered the royal archives of Valoria.

Neither knew that their lives had already begun moving toward one another.

But for now, they remained strangers.

Separated by an ocean.

And by worlds that could not have been more different.
