Chapter 1 - Prologue

Drip, drip, drip. Blood was slowly dripping out of the mouth of Dr. Morsus, who was currently tied to a chair. The basement that he was being held in was cold and the air that moved around made his injuries sting. He had been captured by a clan that disapproved of his research and they had been torturing him for the last three days. Whenever he would be close to dying they would bring in someone with a healing ability to save him, just to repeat the process.

As he sat there the man walked back into the room, wearing the same ski mask and holding ice on his knuckles. No matter how bloody they got he never asked for the healer to fix them.

"You're hard to break," the man said, putting the ice down. "I like that."

He them punched Dr. Morsus in the stomach so hard that he was lifted up off of the chair, blood, fresh this time, flew out of his mouth. The doctor knew he wouldn't be able to hold out much longer. Luckily, he had been biding his time and now that three days had elapsed he could finally tell them what they wanted to know. They wouldn't be able to do anything now anyway.

"You'll never find it." He said between gasps. "By now my assistant would have taken it far away and hidden it where nobody would think to look."

The man was silent for a moment, but the doctor could tell from his body language that what he said had caused a reaction.

The man was enraged.

With a roar the man charged and began punching the doctor relentlessly. The whole time the man was yelling.

"You had an assistant!" He screamed, blood and sweat starting to soak into his sweater and sweatpants. "We had been monitoring you for weeks, and we never saw anyone coming or going besides you. And we monitored you 24/7, you didn't hand anything off to anyone!"

The man stopped his punching for a moment to yell at one of his lackeys to go check the lab for any secret passageways. That was the only way that he could think of that would allow for an assistant. They hadn't checked because they had the blueprints for the whole building, but they may have missed something obvious.

Ha ha ha…

The man felt his face get warm as he turned and saw the doctor laughing, spraying blood all over the floor.

"As I said, you'll never find them. My assistant was a member of the Speedster clan. The tunnels under the lab go out for miles, and they would have been able to traverse them in a matter of minutes." Dr. Morsus coughed up a mouthful of blood, then continued. "They could be in a different country by now, I have no idea."

The doctor didn't say anything else. Not because he didn't want to, he had been enjoying his small victory over the brute, but because he couldn't. The doctor no longer had a head.

The man was standing behind the doctor, the doctor's head on the ground in front of him, panting. He had gotten so mad that he blacked out, and had taken the doctor's head off in the process. He just stod there for a moment before one of his men barged in.

"Boss, they found a tunnel under the lab." He said only stuttering slightly at the headless doctor. "The tunnels are old, probably older than their building, which is why we didn't know about them. I'm sorry."

The scream of rage that followed was heard four blocks away, resulting in more than a few noise complaints.

In a far away town, on the steps of the local orphanage, a baby cried.
