I happily walked out with Cleo by my side. I stroked her hair since she was nervous. I told her that she has nothing to worry about. We drove to work and everyone greeted me warmly. That is everyone except the taskforce. The explosion exposed a secret storage unit which held every victim on their list. To their dismay everything from fingerprints to DNA on everything single trophy belonged to Gus. He was killed in the police department itself. So they had no choice but to close the case. To make matters worse there was proof that the victims weren't the best of society either. They were members of organized crime that dealt with human trafficking and other heinous crimes that would make their stomach turn. The chief made the announcement that the case was closed. The family of the victims had to leave the building with their heads lowered in shame. The so-called innocent victims had recorded actions of depravity that made the toughest officer vomit. A few had even fainted. Others were so traumatized they needed therapy. They were amazed these people managed to do all this without anyone knowing about their evil. A few bravely patted me on the back as they praised how Gus made the world a safer place with those loonies out of the picture. He fits the profile perfectly. He grew up in an abusive home and he had suffered PTSD. He did mention that he was finding a way to relieve himself.
I found out from Van Pelt that Brody was the one who tipped them off. He was trying to get an immunity deal. He broke the rules. I will pay him a visit. I was thinking along the lines of blowfish poison. It won't be pretty but I am at my limit. I stared at her sadly as I was screaming inside. I wanted to smash everything but that would only get me in trouble. I apologize for not doing a proper background check before the introduction. I wanted her to be happy. She brushed it off saying she was going to be ok. Her new boyfriend whom I had introduced was squeaky clean. So she harbours no ill will. She showed me a engagement ring and I congratulated her. One taskforce member watched me from a distance. She had some Hispanic features and some Caucasian features. She had hair tied to a ponytail and wore simple clothes. I happily extended my hand to greet her. She took my hand and shook it before asking me how long it will be before evidence showed up. How long before I was arrested and off the streets. Van Pelt reminded her that I was nowhere near the victims during the murders. Every evidence proves I am not the killer so they had better make peace with the fact that the case was closed and the evil that these people had done was out in broad daylight. She smiled, "Brody is on his way here." I smiled, "Good. The sooner he talks the better for all of us." No sooner I said that another member of the taskforce came. He had tanned skin and curly brown hair. His voice was deep and resonating, "Brody said that his friend Gus was the serial killer. The storage was the place he was going to tell us about once we gave him the immunity deal. All the victims are present and accounted for." They stared at me with surprise as though they were questioning their own intelligence. I on the other hand walked out to face an apologetic chief. I smiled, "No hard feelings. This is in the past. Let's just forget about it and move on." She gave me a polite smile and went to yell at the super cop.
