Chapter 116 - The One Who Walks Behind

The wooden door slowly closed behind Feroz and Suleiman.

The sound echoed through the empty hallway.

Neither of them spoke.

Feroz kept thinking about the five versions of himself.

Each one had believed he was right.

Each one had also been wrong.

Only the last one had admitted he did not know everything.

That version had remained until the end.

Feroz quietly smiled to himself.

"I think I understand."

Suleiman looked at him.

"Do you?"

Feroz nodded.

"A leader keeps learning."

Suleiman smiled.

"That is part of it."

Feroz sighed.

"I had a feeling you were going to say that."

"It would worry me if you didn't."

For a moment, both of them laughed.

The hallway felt lighter than before.

---

They continued walking.

This part of the Learning Path looked different.

The stone walls were smoother.

The carvings became fewer.

Instead of great battles or ancient trees...

they showed ordinary people.

A mother carrying her child.

An old man helping someone stand.

Two friends sharing food.

A young girl leading an old blind traveler across a bridge.

Feroz slowed down.

"There are no warriors."

Suleiman nodded.

"No."

"No heroes either."

"No."

"Why?"

Suleiman stopped beside one carving.

The old blind traveler rested one hand on the little girl's shoulder.

The girl was smiling.

She looked no older than ten.

"What do you see?"

Feroz studied the carving.

"A child helping someone older."

"What else?"

"The old man trusts her."

Suleiman nodded.

"Who is leading?"

"The girl."

"And who is stronger?"

Feroz looked again.

"The old man looks stronger."

"He is taller."

"He is older."

"He could probably protect her."

Suleiman smiled.

"And yet..."

"...he follows."

Feroz remained silent.

He had never thought about leadership that way.

---

"The world teaches that the strongest person always leads."

Suleiman's calm voice echoed through the hallway.

"The Learning Path teaches something different."

"What?"

"The one in front is not always the leader."

Feroz frowned.

"I don't understand."

Suleiman pointed toward the old man.

"He cannot see."

"The child can."

"So today..."

"...she leads."

Feroz slowly nodded.

"So leadership changes."

"Sometimes."

"And sometimes..."

Suleiman continued,

"...the greatest leader is the one who knows when someone else should walk first."

Those words settled deeply inside Feroz.

He remembered Haroon.

Many times Haroon had taken the lead.

Other times...

Yusuf had.

Even Mrs. Aliya had guided them when nobody else knew what to do.

None of them had argued about who was first.

They simply did what the moment needed.

---

The hallway opened into another chamber.

It was much larger than the last one.

Sunlight entered from a high ceiling.

At the center stood only one object.

A long stone road.

It stretched from one side of the room to the other.

The road was narrow.

Only one person could walk on it at a time.

Along both sides of the road...

dozens of stone statues stood silently.

Every statue faced forward.

Every face looked different.

Men.

Women.

Young.

Old.

Some carried books.

Some carried farming tools.

Some held empty hands.

None carried weapons.

Feroz looked around.

"They're watching."

"They are."

"Who are they?"

Suleiman answered honestly.

"I do not know."

Feroz smiled.

"You really say that a lot."

"I hope I always can."

---

They walked closer.

Something immediately felt strange.

Every statue looked toward the road.

Not toward the room.

As if all of them were watching whoever walked there.

Feroz looked at Suleiman.

"What is this place?"

Suleiman answered quietly.

"The Road of Followers."

Feroz repeated the words.

"Followers..."

The name alone made him uneasy.

"I don't want people following me."

Suleiman looked at him.

"Many people say that."

"And?"

"Life rarely asks our permission."

---

Feroz stared at the long path.

"What happens here?"

"You walk."

"That's all?"

"For now."

Feroz laughed softly.

"I've learned those words usually hide something."

"They do."

---

Suleiman stepped away from the road.

"This lesson belongs to you."

"Aren't you coming?"

"No."

Feroz looked surprised.

"You've been with me through every lesson."

"I will remain here."

"Why?"

Suleiman folded his hands.

"Because there are roads..."

"...everyone must walk alone."

Feroz looked toward the narrow stone path.

Then back at Suleiman.

"What am I supposed to do?"

"Walk."

"And if something happens?"

"It will."

"And then?"

Suleiman smiled peacefully.

"Then choose."

Feroz shook his head.

"You people really love that word."

"Choice?"

"Yes."

Suleiman looked at the statues surrounding the road.

"Every life..."

"...becomes the result of many small choices."

"Not one great decision."

"Hundreds of small ones."

Feroz quietly remembered Rahim's warning.

"When the choice arrives..."

"Do not choose too quickly."

Perhaps...

that warning had never been about one choice.

Perhaps it was about learning how to choose.

---

Feroz took one slow step onto the stone road.

The moment his foot touched it...

every statue opened its eyes.

Stone eyes.

Cold.

Silent.

Watching him.

Feroz immediately stopped.

A low sound spread through the chamber.

Not voices.

Not words.

Footsteps.

Hundreds of footsteps.

Behind him.

He slowly turned around.

The road behind him...

was no longer empty.

Dozens of shadow-like figures had appeared.

Men.

Women.

Children.

None had faces.

None spoke.

They simply stood there...

waiting.

Feroz looked back at Suleiman.

"What are they?"

Suleiman did not move.

"They are waiting."

"For what?"

His answer was calm.

"For someone..."

"...to decide where they will go."

The first shadow quietly took one step forward.

Then another.

Not passing Feroz.

Following him.

Feroz's heartbeat became slower.

He looked ahead at the endless road.

Then behind him...

at the silent figures.

For the first time in his life...

he truly understood something.

Leading someone...

did not begin when they called you a leader.

It began...

the moment someone decided to walk behind you.
