Sissy didn't know why she let the stableboy get under her skin. Somehow he had irked her more than any person she had ever met, which was ironic, before this she was a barmaid and had encountered countless drunks and lechers, but none perturbed her so perfectly as Emmanuel. She had seen very little harm in enjoying the company of her servants tonight. The crush of the party was just too much for her. Seeing him look at her as if she were the intruder did not sit well with her.
It made her feel even more out of place than she was already feeling. Everyone seemed to like her here at Fenway, and if they did not they dared never to utter the words within an earshot of her or anyone she was familiar with. Everyone except Emmanuel.
