Chapter 42 - Chapter 40

*** Jacob's POV

We were still in the field, except I was in my beast form, and she was resting against me, massaging my paws. While she was messing with my paws, she was also staring out into the field, her blueish-green eyes searching the vast field, while catching the moonlight.

Her swollen lips were pressed together in a firm line as she was deep in thought, and her brown slightly wavy hair caught the fresh breeze every couple of minutes, flapping lightly on her shoulders. She was using her coat as a bum cushion while resting her back on my side, petting me like a dog.

Although I have pride, I had none with her.

Especially when she started scratching behind my ear. It was like heaven. whether I liked to admit it or not.

[Paris Huh?] I asked through the mind link and she glanced in my direction meeting my eyes, which were still bright, even though my coat looked dark, almost midnight, contrasted to her almost light speckled coat, which I've only seen a couple of times.

Even though I decided to shift, I told her not to bother since we didn't know how much control we had, and it would be best not to risk it, especially when she isn't ready. But I wanted to cuddle and she thought about burrowing in my comfortable side.

[Who are you meeting?] I asked and she let out a small sigh, shifting her position so she was staring into my eyes, with her bluish-green ones, that were observing my reaction and my current mood.

"I'm meeting the leader of the Romeo Clan." She started and I tilted my head to the side, resting my paw on her lap, suddenly feeling worried. Although I haven't heard much about that man, even taking over my position in the underworld he was one of the few that choose not to greet me, which was interesting.

But that wasn't the reason why I felt uneasy, it was the fact that there was nothing about him known. Those that know about him, can't reveal information about him or they will suffer death. However, some families get to see another day, based on how Kenzie feels close to him, almost like a family friend.

Even so, I was still worried about my mate's safety.

She reached to caress my cheek, noticing how my mood shifted. Her eyes had a worried glint in them as she stared at me before she continued.

"I'm also planning to meet the leader of the Dragons, who is also a good friend of ours." I narrowed my eyes, as she listed both of the top families in Paris, and to make matters worse, the Dragons were a supernatural clan, if they stumbled across the prophecy, what would they do?

[What exactly are you going to meet them about?] I asked and she took in a deep breath before glancing out in the distance.

"The both of them have a good reputation of finding things, especially ancient things. I'm going to meet the leader of the Romeo Clan because he knows about the ancient six families, yes I'm talking about the wolf bloodlines." She answered my unasked questions.

It was true that there were six ancient wolf bloodlines, which is why there are supreme alphas, which both Kenzie and I are descendants of, but it seemed that she wanted to dig deeper and figure out what happened to the others.

[Is there a reason why you're looking into the ancient bloodlines?] I asked in a whine and she nodded, pulling out the slip of paper that was the prophecy, but it was almost like magic when she pulled it out.

"The prophecy is connected to the ancient bloodlines, and I need to figure out how many of the original bloodlines are still alive." She waved her hand and the slip of paper disappeared again, and it startled me, to the point where I got defensive and got onto my feet.

She looked between my started expression and the missing piece of paper, before letting out an amused chuckle. "Don't be worried, it's something that Rhonda has been making for me, it's almost like a secret compartment, which she planted in the hairpin." She explained, and I wanted to scoff at how startled I was.

[Rhonda is taking precautions as well? Is she still working to make other magical items for you?"] I asked and she chuckled again, before motioning to lie down, so she could rest on my side once again. I listened and circled her, before melding to her side, resting my head on her lap.

"Rhonda is just as worried as you, so she's started planning out a potential weapon, so she testing out her skills, and how compatible she can make things for me. That's why she put a secret compartment in the hairpin, and I was told to wear it all the time, so she wasn't worried. Always nagging." She muttered and I nodded, remembering how defensive Rhonda was at my place, always keeping an eye on me, while she was at Kenzie's side.

When I first my Miss Rivers, I was expecting a regular lady who could keep Kenzie safe, while monitoring her, almost like a regular human or wolf. Little did I expect that my mate had a witch standing by her side, almost like a hidden weapon.

And Miss Rivers wasn't a weak witch either, rather she was just as talented as Clove, if not stronger. And while I was glad that Kenzie had a rare weapon on her side, I sometimes got nervous about how much she was going to be a target because of that witch.

"Don't worry, Rhonda is also coming with me to Paris since she knows you're not able to come, and because her coven is close by." She patted my head and I perked up, if both Rhonda and Geroge were going, then she would be alright, nothing would harm her. Right?

[I'll trust your words, but you'll have to promise to message and call me every day.] I made her promise and she nodded her head.

"I'll make sure to stay in touch, however, you should let me continue my potential plans while I'm other there." She leaned into my warm coat, once again messing with my paws, and all I could do was melt.

"I'm meeting the Dragons because they have almost every record of all supernatural beings, and with my findings of the ancient bloodlines, and the potential Pureblood Vampire, I can figure out who this person is, and think about how to end him, without bringing harm to those around us." She muttered and I looked at her face, taking note of how she looked relaxed but at the same time worried.

[Do you think you can trust their words?] I asked, and she lightly scoffed under her breath.

"Is there anything that you can trust when you're in the underworld?" She asked looking up to the sky, and I could feel how she felt through our bond, that feeling of slight fear and worry. That nervous feeling that you get as you're about to track into some uncharted waters.

[There's a reason why the underworld is not for the weak.] I tried to comfort her and she nodded her head.

"Even if one of them try to tell me a lie, one thing has remained true about people, especially in the dark world. 'There is always a bit of truth behind a lie.'" She repeated a common sentence that was often referred to during business deals.

When I returned her at the estate, Rhonda and her brother Eli were waiting outside, taking her in their arms, before sending me off, or at least Rhonda did, in her particular way of glaring at me.

Driving back to my house, I pulled into the driveway, sitting in my car for a couple of minutes as I saw a new side of Kenzie this evening, she's always been good about keeping her wall up, but today it seemed that she slightly cracked.

And as much as I like seeing her slowly rely on me, I was slowly starting to get worried about her. As much as I try to understand why she is insistent on keeping the Mafia in her hands, I was shocked that she decided to not fight as much for the CEO position, even planning to put her brother in the seat.

And while I can understand her planning, I was irritated that the old man Alex, doesn't realize he's losing the chance to make his company great. Because he is so set on making sure the company will go to a male heir, even to the point that he stole Kenzie's plans.

'That man never fails to disappoint me, especially when he came to my presence asking for more power to wed off someone, whether if he knew she was a wolf or not.' I got out of my car, greeted Anothony, before walking up to my room freshening up, to lay in bed thinking about Kenzie.

My mate.
