Now, We are back at the present, where the conversation with Dan Vonter was left off to tell you the recounts of my, if not glorious, fascinating debut into the world of Monster slayers. Lots of revelations were unleashed onto this world on that day, both extraordinary in their own sense. Although the continuous set of glorious revelation of Zen rankers and the prophecy of Kalaz has helped me masked my embarrassing debut to some point, however, my debut was as extraordinary as Kalaz. If you look closely, on this day two opposing gods were born. Kalaz, the emissary of Magic, the wielder of magic or the messiah of magic? Whatever and me, the arch nemesis of Kalaz, the child of magic-less or the challenger of anti-magic? Whatever suits your taste, you can remember me with one of the nicknames. After all this is my story, my tale, the protagonist needs some glorious nickname to go by. However, the title I give myself will be none of these. As you can see it's the title everyone by the end of the tale everyone will gradually find it more sensible and realistic.
What do you think? The son of Magic god with the authority over magic and a puny human unfavored by the god of magic. Is it not these two the ultimate rivalry naturally? So you must be wondering how someone like me with no magic will ever hope to compete with the magical god, Kalaz?
" So Lan, not to sound offensive but you really have no magic?," Dan said, curiously looking at my face.
" It seems I don't, since the stone didn't even vibrate?," I replied and shrugged my shoulders.
" It's amazing you got in, I heard it was Master Senx who backed you? "
" You are right, the examiner also recommended me. So for that I'm kind of grateful to them," I said. It was true, I never expected them to give me a second chance even after discovering that I have no talent for magic but it's nothing special to them, one magic less student in the whole academy wasn't going to give them any trouble or was it?
" The teacher may have seen something interesting in you, looks like I can't lay back any longer. It would be too embarrassing if I lose to you, right?," He said with a cheerful face. Not sure whether it was an insult to me or to him.
" that- never mind. Its true that I'm weak but- "
" I'm sorry ! That's not what I mean, it's just that in terms of magical power, I'm more gifted right than you so it would be dishonor to you if I don't use my gifts to its full potential, right?" He really twisted his words so well.
I looked at him and smiled. " Let's go back to class, It's Teacher Ferei class "
He nodded and we went back to our class. There were two seperate classes for first years, Class one and Class two. Since the numbers of selected candidates were high, two rooms were needed to allocate all the students. It must be some kind of luck but I'm in Class one and all those interesting figures from the entrance test were there apart from Nyaka, Jeral and Werem. The tall girl and Dan Vonter and some green rankers whom I vaguely recognised. Dan Vonter sat behind me and in front of me sat the tall girl, however she wasn't there at the moment so I took advantage of the situation to ask Dan about her. " Hey, Dan. So, that tall girl from the entrance, the one with Yen affinity, Who is she?, "
His eyes flung wide as if some warning were to be advised. " I hate her "
" What? okay- so who is she ? she looks like a noble, " I said glancing at the door making sure she hasn't come yet.
" That tall witch is from the Raskira family, one of the four pillars. " So bitter he was, Dan had some kind of history with her, I suspected.
" What? !! two pillars are in my class?? " I shouted in a low tone.
" Her name is Ellena Raskira, I heard her elder sister is in Hunter class, a senior. So she must be quite disappointed that she is average class like us, so deserving of her !! " Dan was enjoying himself, no malice but the two had some silly conflict.
" Her sister is in Hunter class? " I repeated and wondered how gifted these noble families are.
" So is yours,..... sister " Dan said.
" Right, she is a miracle, " I said smiling, wondering how Nyaka must be doing on her own.
By that time, Ellena came back and quietly sat in her seat and suddenly from behind Dan said " Someone must be pretty disappointed to be in the same class as me "
Ellena turned back with a fearsome expression on her face and said " Oh, who is this? the clown of Vonter family. "
" Hahaha- so what? The clown is atleast a Yen ranker " He replied trying to counter her attack.
" Your face is as stupid as it was three years ago " She unleased another hidden weapon.
" Tall freak witch "
" Circus clown "
" Shut up already and admit defeat! " Dan smirked.
" Can't hold up yourself against a girl?," replied Ellena.
And here I'm in the middle of their verbal warfare chuckling foolishly and not sure how to react. From this day on, although I didn't know nor was provided with a prophecy. My life was going to change with these two around and a beautiful friendship was already blooming and I wasn't aware of it.
Teacher Ferei soon entered the class and began her lessons. I listened curiously as she said. " Scholars believed that the earliest Varaes were as old as mankind. They are fearsome monsters possessing dangerous abilities and with the appearance of magic in this world thousands of years ago, These dangerous beasts began to mutate as time went by and their bodies integrated with magic began to change drastically, Biologically they became magical beasts, however we human did not enter the same phase, we do not know why and humans couldn't use magic back then until the appearance of Kalaz, the first blessed of god Azark. Some ancient scholars have pointed out that when magic was first transmuted in our world as energy and under strange circumstances, these magic energy in some area formed cluster into minerals and in some place condensed in life rich areas, like the heart of forest, in lake, in mountains, in caves..." she paused for a moment and continued " So why only varaes were mutated? We believed it's because some ancient varaes fed on these magic clustered minerals and as a lifeform, varaes consumed one another and the chances are that they also lurked around highly condensed magical premises, thus acquiring mutation over time."
" Excuse me teacher but I heard some varaes use magic, How is that possible? '' someone was curious enough as me. However, back in B-12 I also came across some varaes that used strange abilities. It must be magic.
" They don't cast spells like us. Yes, they can use magical abilities but they do so instinctively, how does a bird know they are supposed to fly? Similarly, it's an extension of their abilities or physiological capabilities. However, not all Varaes use magic, only the high level ones. Even without magical abilities, some varaes are quite as dangerous as the magical ones. " She said.
It was true, the varae I encountered earlier was extremely dangerous, it was emitting some kind of electrical field around him and had a fearsome horn at it's head.
" Varaes are divided into four divisions based on their threat level, starting from lower division, upper division, classified division and anomaly division. Only lower division varaes roam around our kingdom vincity, if you travel further away from our kingdom, the threat level increases however, classified division are hardly seen nowadays, although there are varaes of classified division in southern land, they are extremely rare and interestingly, they lay low and avoid conflict with slayers." She said.
" Teacher, how strong is a classified division varae? " Dan shouted from behind.
" It would take a grandmaster slayer to hunt them down along with a team of support slayers," Teacher Ferei replied.
I wonder what division that varae I encountered back in B-12 falls into, I have encountered many others but that one was unlike I have seen before, it had this air that screamed " death ". Obviously, I avoided conflict, I'm not dumb enough to fight one.
" There are many types of varaes in this world, the most common one you'll come across outside these walls is called Heberud or commonly known as Redhounds, It's similar to wolf in appearance but with larger frame and their fur is indeed blood red. They hunt in packs and compared to wolves, they are ten times strong physically but they are not as intelligent as wolf. Heberud are everywhere, but you shouldn't never underestimate them as they hunt in large numbers. " She continued on. " There are others like venomous kiyandere, a big venomous serpent with feathers on its head and Drasentra, a big lizard with hard scales and Terabones, Otenthere, Necgerte etc. but the one you should must be weary of is this Drasentra, it can camouflage itself in the wild and completely remove its smell and many slayers in past unaware of it actually lost their lives. It's not very strong in strength, what's dangerous is it's cloaking ability."
It was quite fun and interesting to learn about varaes, I never knew it would be like diving into the outside world, there are many dangerous and powerful monsters out there in the wild and I was excited that I would journey out there someday hunting them. Teacher Ferei then left after the lecture of varaes and told us we need to actually learn as much as possible about these monsters since knowledge would give us an edge in actual battle. I agreed, studying them, learning their nature and finding out weakness is a very important aspect of hunting. As someone with no magical prowess, I would not be able to use magic enhanced weapons and for magical abilities, I would have to rely on others for magic support, since from the beginning I was already a step behind everyone, So, I resolved to make it up with everything I know and I can and that is intelligence.
