Chapter 15 - Paradise Island

Queen Hippolyta:

I stand at the entrance of the temple, looking over my beautiful island. I see many lush, green forests next to a shining blue ocean. The sun is high in the cloudless sky. Far below, near the bottom of my temple's staircase, I see countless warriors in training.

"Themyscira," I think.

As I keep looking over, I hear footsteps and turn around.

"Quenn Hippolyta," one of my warriors says. Running toward me, she then drops to one of her knees. Dressed in red and black armor, her usual wild, long red hair falls to the floor as she lowers her head.

"Artemis, what is wrong?"

"Queen Hippolyta," Artemis starts, "Our scouts have reported seeing ships near the horizon."

"Ships? What kind of ships?"

"...Warships," Artemis finally answers.

Hearing this, I take a deep breath before exhaling.

"Today is a day I have long feared. Themyscira is under attack, and one of our own is leading the charge."

"You mean--"

I cut Artemis off before she could finish.

"Prepare the warriors," I order, "And get me my armor."

"Get my armor? Queen Hippolyta?"

Taking another deep breath, I slowly exhale.

"I am joining in the fight."

"But Queen Hippolyta--"

"Artemis! Get my armor and my spear."

Artemis raises her head to look at me. I meet her eyes head-on.

"Yes, Queen Hippolyta."

Bowing again, Artemis turns and runs. When she is gone, I turn around and look toward the ocean.

"Gaia, please guide us."

Artemis:

"Hurry," I shout, watching as my fellow Amazonians rush to prepare for war. "Hurry, my sisters!"

Three of my Amazonian sisters approach, awaiting new orders.

"Donna Troy," I start, turning to my sister, dressed in a sparkling black armor, similar to a star-filled night sky. "Go to the sea wall and help with the cannons."

Donna Troy nods and jumps into the air. She flies with haste toward the sea wall. I then turn to another sister, this one dressed in purple armor and a green cape.

"Antiope. Go to the West pier and stay with the squad there. Wait for the signal, then attack."

Donna Troy nods and leaves. I turn to my final sister, dark-skinned and wearing blue and golden armor.

"Nubia. You will be on the frontline with me."

Nubia nods and throws her fist into the palm of her hand.

"Got it," Nubia says with a smile.

Looking around again, I see more and more of my sisters quickly preparing for the upcoming battle; sharpening their weapons on grindstones, testing the strings on their bows, and even readying the horses.

"Warships incoming!"

With a scout nearby shouting, we all turn toward the horizon. There, at the edge, we see a thick, black line between the sun and the water.

"Sisters," I shout, being as loud as I can. "Battle position! Now!"

On command, my sisters run and line up. Raising their shields, their spears or swords, they ready themselves. About to join in, I stop when I hear a powerful voice.

"Artemis."

Turning, I see Queen Hippolyta, dressed in her golden battle armor and holding a spear and shield.

"Queen Hippolyta. You came."

"I told you I would be joining, didn't I?"

"Yes, you did, but I would advise against it. My Queen--"

"Enough. Artemis, I will fight alongside you and the rest of my Amazons."

The power, the command, in Queen Hippolyta's voice tells me everything.

"There's no point," I think. "She's going to fight with us."

Clutching my sword's handle tightly, I look at Queen Hippolyta as she stands over her Amazon army.

"Of course," I say. I nod and turn toward the black horizon. However, as we all keep watch on the black horizon, something begins to happen. Somehow, the thick black line separating the sun and ocean split apart.

"What? What is happening? What is going on?"

Many of my sisters ask these questions. We all watch as, instead of one black line, there are now two lines, with one of them quickly flying toward us. Reaching us in mere moments, the black line, which is made of strange-looking metal birds, begins raining fire on us.

"Shield," I yell.

On my command, my sisters all raise their shields. Sparks jump off our shields as we manage to protect ourselves. Another moment later, I hear many loud booms thundering throughout the sky.

Turning, I smile when I see cannonballs shooting into the sky and hitting many birds. However, my smile doesn't stay for long. Many of the metal birds that are still in the air open, and soldiers in black armor and hoods start jumping off them. Landing on the beaches surrounding the ports, I lower my shield and raise my spear high into the air.

"My sisters! Attack!"

My sisters shout with me and raise their weapons. Wasting no time, we all charge toward the soldiers. One of the first to reach them, a soldier aims at me with a strange weapon, but before he can attack, I swing my spear and hit him, knocking him to the sand. Another soldier, holding a similar weapon, attacks me.

Screaming as something small hits me, I swing my spear again and hit this soldier. Before I know it, the beach of Themyscira is filled with screaming and clashing metals. The soldiers have weapons from Men's World, but they are no match for ours.

Hitting another soldier with my elbow, I knock him to the sand before knocking another soldier with my shield. Through the fight, I can see Queen Hippolyta picking up and throwing another soldier into the ocean water. Queen Hippolyta, seeing me through the fight too, smiles. About to smile back, I stop when I see someone landing on the sand near Queen Hippolyta.

Dressed in red, blue, and golden armor, this former Amazonian looks at Queen Hippolyta before lunging forward.

I try to scream. I try to warn Queen Hippolyta, but before I can, Diana punches Queen Hippolyta, knocking her to the ground. The Queen drops her spear and shield as she slides across the sand. I try to run to help Queen Hippolyta, but even before I can take my first step, more soldiers drop from the sky. These ones are different from the ones we have been fighting.

One is a giant man with a black mask and strange, glowing lines running all over his body. There is a second giant man, but instead of a black mask and glowing lines, he is green like an alligator and has sharp teeth. Together, these two start throwing and beating my sisters like they are nothing.

"Scouts! Scouts! Sent the signals!"

The nearby scouts hear my order and raise their bows. Aiming into the sky, they shoot their arrows. I turn around, hoping Antiope and her reinforcement are coming, but instead, I see smoke rising from the West Pier.

"Noooo!"

Before I can do anything, a soldier I knocked to the sand gets up. Having lost his weapons, he reaches for something on his armor. Shaped like a cup but with a strange cover, the soldier pulls something from it before throwing it at me. I see this and raise my shield, but it's not enough. Whatever he throws, it turns into a fireball that knocks me onto the beach this time.

"Mmm...."

Strangely, I can't hear anything now. I don't hear the sound of my sister fighting. I don't hear the cannons firing. All I can hear is a strange ringing sound. Ignoring the ringing, I shake my head and force myself up. However, as I struggle to stand on my two feet, I can see we are losing.

More and more of my sisters are falling to the ground, while more and more soldiers and "super soldiers" storm onto our beaches. They tear through our formation, destroying our weapons and armor, and sending more than half of us to Hades. Still struggling, a large shadow looms over me. It was the man with the black mask and glowing lines.

"Señorita," the man says, "Allow Bane to put you out of your misery."

Bane raises his arms into the air before throwing them back down. I raise my shield, hoping to stop them, but I don't. Instead, before his arms can meet my shield, something shoots past me and hits Bane. He screams as he falls back to the sand.

"What?"

"Amazonian," a voice shouts. Turning around, I see Ares, wearing his pitch-black armor. Holding out his hand, his sword comes flying back into it.

"Don't be fools! Fall back!"

As much as I hate Ares, I hate to see my sisters fall even more.

"Amazonians," I shout, raising my spear before pointing it at Ares. "Fall back! Defense position!"

My remaining sisters nod and quickly fall back. While the wounded ones quickly run, the strong ones keep their shields up and push the invaders back. Strangely, besides Ares are two others, one is a woman with long black hair and the other is a man with short yellow hair.

While they run to help my sisters, Ares is standing with his hands at his sides. Wondering what he is doing, I start seeing his hands glowing. Glowing darker and darker, until they are red, Ares then slams his hands down.

The blue sky then turns black, with millions and millions of arrows raining down. They hit the soldiers and super soldiers, forcing them back.

"Ares," I shout, finally reaching the God of War. "Why are you here? And helping us?"

"I have my own goals, Artemis," Ares answers. "Just be glad our interests are aligned. Now, move!"

Ares:

Pushing the Amazonian away, I turn and look at the battlefield. With the Amazonian army fleeing, Zatanna, John, and I are left alone to face the One Earth soldiers and Superman's regimes.

"That is a sodding lot of soldiersrs" John says. "I don't suppose you two have any tricks left. You know, besides that arrow rain trick you did."

"I have one 'trick' left," I answer. Reaching into my pocket, I pull out a handful of dragon teeth.

"What are those?" Zatanna asks.

"My own army."

Throwing the dragon teeth to the ground, I watch as the sand explodes and a skeleton hand bursts out.

"Bloody hell," John yells. He and Zatanna keep watching as a small group of skeleton warriors, armed with swords and maces, and wearing iron armor, stand between us and the One Earth soldiers.

"They can hold them off," I say. "Give the Amazonians time to escape. Meanwhile, we should get out of here."

The two nodding, I teleport the three of us away, leaving the undead warriors to fight. Appearing back in my temple, Zatanna immediately takes off her top hat and reaches inside. Pulling out a blank sheet of paper, a pen, and an arrow, John and I watch as she starts writing a note.

"What are you doing?" I ask.

"I'm sending a message to our 'dear' friend," Zatanna answers. When she is done writing, she rolls up the paper and ties it to the arrow. She then hands the arrow to me.

"Can you fire this?"

"Of course."

Using my magic, I summon my ancient bow. Pulling back the bowstring, I fire it into the air. In mid-air, the arrow turns into a red bird that flies through the air.

"Let's hope he gets the message fast."
