Chapter 15 - Trapjaw Shadow Ants

After transferring school credits to his sisters, Steve told Mr. Blackwood that he might be absent every now and then, so he can just deduct his credits accordingly whenever he needs to. Mr. Blackwood was surprised, but he agreed. As long as he had enough school credits, it was fine whatever he did or whether he cut class or not. After dealing with everything, Steve left the school building and outside the school territory. For some reason, Steve had a feeling that he had somehow forgotten something, but he decided that it was probably his imagination. Besides, even if he did forget something, it probably wasn't anything important since he actually forgot about it. He wouldn't forget anything important. After deciding that it was his imagination, Steve decided to ignore the feeling. Ignoring his feeling, he went to the monster territory.

There, he summoned Icy out. He told Icy to find some bronze tier monsters that were similar in strength to the ones she had battled today Icy nodded and started running around and searching for some monsters. Steve just followed her and went wherever Icy did. Icy found some suitable bronze quality monsters pretty quickly. The monsters were Trapjaw Shadow Ants and were all about half a meter long. There were about 10 Trapjaw Shadow Ants. The ants didn't really seem like much of a threat, but one would be seriously wrong if that's what they thought.

The Trapjaw Shadow Ant had a really strong defense, but it severely lacked speed and attack. However, There were 2 abilities that made up for the Trapjaw Shadow Ant's weakness. The first ability that the Trapjaw Shadow Ant could use was shadow movement, which allowed them to instantly move next to someone, covering up the weakness of its slow speed.

However, there were three problems with this ability. First, the ability has a 30 second cooldown, which means that the Trapjaw Shadow Ant had to be careful when it uses the ability and grasp the right timing. Second, the Trapjaw Shadow Ant could only use the ability to move to a destination on top of a shadow. However, they do not have to have a shadow or be on top of a shadow to use the ability. Third, the shadow movement ability of the Trapjaw Shadow Ant has a maximum effective range of 25 meters for a level 10 bronze quality 1 star Trapjaw Shadow Ant, but the effective range increases as the level and quality of the Trapjaw Shadow Ant increases.

Of course, just the shadow movement ability wouldn't be enough to make the Trapjaw Shadow Ant a formidable foe, since it didn't really have a strong attack. However, the ant had another special ability that paired up really well with its shadow movement ability: extreme jaw snap. Using this ability, the ant could snap its jaws close at an extremely fast speed. This doesn't seem like much, but the ability shouldn't be underestimated. The force produced by something is equal t the mass times acceleration. Using that ability, the Trapjaw Shadow Ant can close its jaws with an astonishing acceleration of 100,000 meters per second squared.

(Author: The actual maximum acceleration of the jaws of Trap Jaw Ant, on Earth, is about 100,000 g, aka 981,000 meters per second squared. It sounds like a lot, and it is, but they only take about 0.13 milliseconds to snap their jaws close, so their jaws only reach a speed of about 35 to 64 meters per second. Doesn't sound like a lot? The cheetah's maximum speed is about 60 miles per hour, which is approximately 26.8 meters per second, about half as fast as the speed the Trap Jaw Ant can snap its jaws close. It's probably easier to understand if you took high school physics.)

How fast was the acceleration of 100,000 meters per second squared? Well, the force of gravity has an acceleration of about 9.81 meters per second squared. Comparing the 2 forces, the acceleration of the jaws of the Trapjaw Shadow Ant is about 10,193 times as much as the acceleration of gravity. The highest acceleration of a cheetah on Earth was only about 8.94 meters per second squared. (Author: These are my own calculations based on 0 mi/h to 60 mi/h in 3 seconds, it might be off, but should be around 9 meters per second squared). Comparing those speeds, the maximum acceleration of the jaws of the Trapjaw Shadow Ant was about 11,185 times that of the maximum acceleration of a cheetah.

In simple words, it was very, very fast, and since force is mass times acceleration, its jaws release an immense force upon snapping and anyone underestimating the strength of its jaws will pay dearly for it. However, like its shadow movement ability, there were a few problems with this ability. First, it had a 10 second cooldown, not as bad as shadow movement, but it was still a long time. Second, it also needed time to load its jaws, or, more accurately, get its jaws in position. The Trapjaw Shadow Ant has latches built into its head to keep its jaws in place, which stores energy and allows the ant to release that energy instantly when the latch is opened, resulting in an ultra-high amount of energy that allows its jaws to close extremely fast.

Icy easily defeated and kill all the Trapjaw Shadow Ants. After all, they couldn't even compare to Icy in terms of their strength, not to mention that Icy was much faster than the Trapjaw Shadow Ants. Besides, even if Icy just stood there and let the ants snap their jaws at her, they probably wouldn't even leave a mark on her and would just end up breaking their own jaws instead. Then, Steve wanted to turn them into monster cards, but he realized that he didn't know how to and he forgot to release the system.

Steve realized that he did forget something and the feeling that he had from before was correct. However, he also thought that the assumption he made about things that he forgot naturally weren't important was correct, since to him, the system wasn't really important. The only thing kind of important about the system was it turning monsters into monster cards for him, but he could just learn from Icy, although it would be a bit of trouble. The system would also prevent the VRBS thingy from finding out his spirit power and learn about his abnormally high spirit power, but Steve could just avoid that and skip class since he didn't really need school credits and he could afford to skip school every day until he graduated from middle school and still be left with a lot of credits.

Steve released the Monster Tamer System from the confined space and told it to turn the dead Trapjaw Shadow Ants into monster cards. He put his hand on the Trapjaw Shadow Ants. The system was unhappy that Steve had kept him in the confined space and just forgot about it. However, it still decided to follow Steve's orders and turn the Trapjaw Shadow Ants into monster cards. Even though it was unhappy, it did not want to go back to that confined space again. It was too terrifying for him. Besides, he was much weaker than Steve and so could only compromise. It was afraid that Steve will punish it for not obeying Steve's orders.

As can be seen here, systems are basically those typical bullies that bully the weak and fear the strong. Or maybe the Monster Tamer System was just unique and the other systems do bully the weak and fear the strong? No matter what, the Monster Tamer System had just dragged down the already terrible reputation of systems that had been almost unanimously established by most of the authors from the planet known as Earth.

After the system had turned the Trapjaw Shadow Ants into monster cards, Steve decided that it was good enough for now and left the monster territory.
