Cameron stirred in his sleep.
Just enough to notice something.
A faint scratching sound came from somewhere outside his bedroom door.
His brow furrowed.
He shifted beneath the covers.
The scratching stopped.
For a few seconds, there was nothing.
Then—
scratch.
Scratch.
Cameron opened his eyes halfway.
He stared into the darkness.
Nothing.
His bedroom was exactly as he had left it.
His books were stacked on the small table beside his bed.
His clothes were scattered over the chair.
The curtains were drawn.
The room was dark except for the faint glow from the streetlight leaking through the edges of the fabric.
He listened.
Nothing.
Cameron sighed.
"Probably a rat."
His eyes closed again.
He turned onto his side.
Within seconds, sleep pulled him back under.
Thunk.
Cameron's eyes opened.
He didn't move.
He listened.
Silence.
He waited.
Nothing.
He pulled the blanket higher over his shoulder.
Then—
Thunk.
His eyes opened again.
