The drive home was quiet.

Not peaceful.

Quiet.

There was a difference.

Ezra sat in the passenger seat, staring through the windshield without really looking at the road.

Mathew drove with both hands wrapped tightly around the steering wheel.

Neither man spoke.

The hospital slowly disappeared behind them as the road stretched toward home.

Mathew could still hear the monitors.

The beeping.

The nurses.

The doctors.

The questions he had asked and the answers nobody had been able to give him.

Carol was still unconscious.

Destiny was still unconscious.

His daughter.

His wife.

Both lying in the same hospital.

And he had no idea why.

He swallowed.

His eyes remained on the road.

Beside him, Ezra shifted slightly.

Mathew glanced at him.

Ezra was staring out the window now.

His reflection stared back.

Older.

Tired.

Almost unfamiliar.

Mathew looked away.

He had spent the entire journey wanting to ask something.

Something he couldn't quite put into words.
