Once she got the answer, Sarah entered the kitchen and found Violet busying herself with a few trays of cupcakes. Sarah peeked from Violet's shoulder and saw that the cupcakes were not the usual flavor they sell in Hello! Cupcakes.
As if noticing her presence, Violet turned around and smiled as she met Sarah's gaze. "Hey!" Violet went back to look at the trays of cupcakes. "You haven't stopped by for a while."
Sarah heaved a sigh. "They're giving me an off day." Her eyes were still on the cupcakes on the trays. "What are you working on? New flavors?"
"Hmm…" Violet nodded casually. "I'm experimenting on a few cupcakes."
"What's the occasion?" Sarah asked. She knew that Violet usually prepared new cupcake flavors whenever there was an occasion.
On Valentine's Day, Violet prepared a few flavors for the celebration. This will keep the customers excited and keep on coming back to their bakery.
"I am just trying out new recipes and ideas," Violet answered. She picked up a frosted cupcake on the tray and handed it over to Sarah. "Here. Taste this. Tell me what you think?"
Sarah hesitated briefly.
A while ago, she had eaten a cupcake on Evan's tray. She told herself that she would be fine with just one cupcake. But now, Violet wanted her to try another one.
Sarah inhaled a breath before taking a bite of the cupcake.
The richness of the chocolate cake spread into her mouth.
Then, her brow furrowed when she realized the cupcake was not as sweet.
"What do you think?" Violet asked while looking at her cousin in anticipation. She could not wait to know what Sarah think about the cupcakes.
"It's not as sweet as I thought," Sarah commented.
"But is it good?"
Sarah nodded. "It's good. The vanilla frosting is to die for! It wasn't too sweet, but, it melted in my mouth like vanilla ice cream."
Violet heaved in relief. " These are the chocolate cupcakes with less sugar. "I think it would be perfect for you if you wanted to enjoy the cupcakes without worrying about your weight."
"I like it. They're really moist," Sarah nodded. "What with the sudden mood to experiment with some new cupcake recipes?"
Violet hesitated. "Ryan did not like Sweet that much. He said he did not like cupcakes. I'm trying to come up with something so that he could enjoy it."
Sarah watched her cousin silently, wondering why Violet was so concerned about Ryan.
Didn't she say that dating him was only an act?
"Why are you working this hard to get him to like your cupcakes?"
"I just want him to enjoy eating cupcakes. I wanted to show him that they're not as bad as he thinks." She then took an empty cupcake box and started to fill it with the cupcakes.
Sarah opened her mouth to speak again. But then she swallowed her words once she saw the excited look on Violet's expression. The frown on her face deepened when she saw Violet closing the box's lid and taking off her apron.
"Where are you going?" Sarah asked."
"I have an appointment with Ryan." She lifted the cupcake box. "I'm taking this for him.
Without waiting for Sarah to respond, Violet turned around and headed out.
Once Violet had left, Sarah continued to stare in the direction where Violet had left with a complicated look in her eyes. She was in a trance and did not notice Evan walking in.
"Earth to Sarah?" Evan waved his hand in front of her face. "What are you doing?" He asked once Sarah turned to look at him. "Where's Violet?" He swept his eyes around the place but could not see Violet anywhere.
"She went out to look for her fake boyfriend." Sarah let out a long, heavy sigh.
"Ryan?" Evan raised a brow inquiringly.
Sarah nodded. The light in her eyes flickered. It was as if she finally realized that the person who stood in front of her was Evan. Sarah shifted her weight between her legs as she looked at Evan. "Hey. I was just thinking about Violet."
"Violet?" Evan frowned. "What about her? Is there something wrong with her?" He saw the complicated look on Sarah's face and thought that perhaps something had happened when the girls chatted earlier.
"I think her feelings for Ryan had started to change," Sarah said. "I'm thinking that she began to like him a little more. Just now, Violet was preparing some cupcakes for that person." Her frown deepened. "She started to care for him, don't you think? Or else, why would she care if that person dislikes sweets or not?" Sarah was uncomfortable at the thought of what might happen. "Evan, I am worried that there would be a day that Violet would fall for Ryan for real. What should we do?"
Evan considered Sarah's words carefully.
His expression turned softer, knowing that Sarah really cared for Violet.
However, regarding Violet's relationship with Ryan… Evan did not think that he could say anything much about it.
Violet was his good friend. However, Evan also knew that Violet was an adult who knew what she was doing.
"Sarah," Evan called softly. "Maybe we shouldn't interfere with this matter and let Violet deal with this on her own."
Sarah frowned. Clearly, she was unhappy to hear Evan's words. "What do you mean? Aren't you worried about Violet? She's your friend. Don't you care about her?" She was disappointed at the thought that Evan did not care much about their friend.
Sarah knew how much Violet valued Evan's friendship and talent.
Then, why doesn't Evan care about Violet?
"That's not it. I cared about Violet. And you knew that too," Evan said carefully. "But surely, this matter was not a matter that he should be interfering with. Sarah, we can't control Violet's feelings. Violet knew what she was getting into when she first agreed with this arrangement. I think we should have faith that Violet will know how to handle her feelings."
