Chapter 242 - Neither Road

Chapter 242 — Neither Road

The ridge broke beneath Henry's feet.

"MOVE!"

Brook heard Sera scream before he understood why.

The ground had been quiet for most of the morning.

Too quiet.

After what had happened the day before, nobody had wanted to talk much.

Crowley walked ahead of the group with one hand pressed against his side where Brook had nearly put a blade through him.

Gabriel stayed near Brook.

Not beside him.

Near him.

There was a difference.

Brook noticed.

He hated that he noticed.

Henry and Sera had been behind them, arguing quietly about whether Henry's little light trick counted as magic or an accident.

Charon had been walking between them.

Tala had stayed close to the stone wall of the ridge, one hand occasionally brushing the rock as if listening through her fingers.

Hutena had said almost nothing.

Then the ridge screamed.

Not literally.

Brook felt it.

A pressure.

Something enormous trying to arrive somewhere that did not have room for it.

The sky above them turned white.

The earth beneath them turned red.

Everyone stopped.

Crowley slowly looked upward.

Then downward.

"Oh, for fuck's sake."

Gabriel's expression changed.

Brook had seen Gabriel serious before.

He had seen him concerned.

He had seen him disappointed.

This was different.

Recognition.

"Move," Gabriel said.

Nobody moved.

The sky opened.

A line of white appeared above the ridge.

Perfectly straight.

It stretched from one side of the horizon to the other.

Then the clouds around it disappeared.

Not burned away.

Removed.

A road began descending from Heaven.

Light formed beneath it.

Step after step after step.

A path.

It was beautiful.

Brook hated it immediately.

At the exact same moment—

The ground beneath the ridge cracked.

Red fire erupted through the stone.

Henry jumped backward.

Sera grabbed his shirt and pulled him away from the opening.

Black flames climbed out of the earth.

They did not spread.

They built.

A second road.

A road going down.

Hell answering Heaven.

Crowley stared at the fire.

"Oh."

Charon backed away.

"No."

The white road continued descending.

The black road continued rising.

And Brook understood something before either path reached them.

They were meeting here.

On this ridge.

For him.

His stomach turned.

"Everybody move!" Brook shouted.

The ridge exploded.

Henry disappeared beneath falling stone.

"Henry!"

Brook ran.

The ground split between them.

A massive crack tore across the ridge.

Henry slid toward it.

His fingers clawed desperately at the broken earth.

"BROOK!"

Brook reached the edge.

Too far.

Henry was ten meters away.

Maybe twelve.

The crack between them widened.

Brook dropped to one knee.

His hand slammed against the ground.

Michael.

The name did not leave his mouth.

It did not need to.

Something inside him opened.

Not a voice.

A direction.

Brook saw Henry.

And something appeared.

A mark.

Small.

Almost invisible.

A thin symbol burning against the back of Henry's jacket.

Brook froze.

Michael stood somewhere behind his thoughts.

Still.

Watching.

Brook understood.

Not everything.

Just enough.

One mark.

One jump.

No more.

He looked at Henry.

The mark brightened.

Brook's body disappeared.

Henry screamed.

Then Brook was standing beside him.

The world hit him a second later.

His stomach twisted violently.

His knees nearly gave out.

But he grabbed Henry.

"Hold on!"

The cliff beneath them collapsed.

Brook pulled Henry toward him.

Nothing happened.

The mark was gone.

Spent.

Brook's eyes widened.

No second jump.

Of course.

The cliff dropped away beneath them.

A shadow moved.

Crowley.

His hand shot through the falling dust.

Brook grabbed it.

Henry grabbed Brook.

Crowley cursed loudly as all three of them slammed against the remaining edge.

Gabriel appeared above them.

Not flying.

Brook did not know how Gabriel got there.

He simply looked down.

"Crowley."

"I KNOW!"

"Pull them up."

"Thank you, Angel. Brilliant advice!"

Charon and Sera reached the edge.

Together, they dragged Henry upward first.

Brook climbed next.

Crowley came last.

The moment Brook's boots touched solid ground—

The white path struck the ridge.

The impact made everything silent.

No explosion.

No thunder.

Just silence.

A staircase of light now stood twenty meters away.

At the same time—

The black path erupted from the opposite side.

Hellfire crawled across the broken stone.

The flames stopped exactly where the light stopped.

Two roads.

Facing each other.

Brook stood between them.

"No," Tala whispered.

Everyone looked at her.

Tala's face had gone pale.

She was staring at the ground.

"The Earth is afraid."

Crowley looked at her.

"The Earth is what?"

Tala ignored him.

Her hand pressed against the stone.

Brook felt it too.

Something beneath them had changed.

Not Gaia.

He knew that immediately.

This wasn't memory.

This wasn't recognition.

This was refusal.

The ridge groaned.

The white staircase tried to extend farther.

The black road answered.

Hellfire pushed forward.

The light pushed back.

The stone between them cracked.

Gabriel stepped toward the white path.

Crowley stepped toward the black one.

Brook grabbed both of their arms.

"Don't."

Gabriel looked at him.

Crowley looked down at Brook's hand.

Then smiled slightly.

"That's cute."

"Shut up."

"Can't."

The ridge shook again.

The Earth moved.

Not violently.

Not like an earthquake.

Brook had expected power.

He had expected stone to rise.

He had expected the ground to become a weapon.

Instead—

The ground simply stopped cooperating.

The white staircase tried to descend.

The next step formed.

Then the earth beneath it swallowed it.

Stone closed over light.

The step disappeared.

Gabriel stared.

The black road reacted.

Fire pushed forward.

The ground opened.

For one second, Crowley smiled.

Then the earth closed again.

The flames vanished beneath solid stone.

Crowley stopped smiling.

"Oh."

Tala slowly stood.

"The Earth is refusing."

Gabriel looked toward her.

"No."

Tala turned.

"No?"

Gabriel looked at the ridge.

Then at Brook.

"Something is refusing."

Brook felt a pulse beneath his feet.

Deep.

Ancient.

Not waking.

Not speaking.

Just remembering that it existed.

Gaia.

Still asleep.

But there.

The ground shifted again.

The white path lost another step.

The black road lost another meter.

Heaven pushed.

Hell pushed back.

Neither side gave up.

Brook's head began hurting.

He grabbed his temple.

Inside him—

Something moved.

Michael.

Lucifer.

Death.

And deeper than all of them—

Silence.

Brook stumbled.

Gabriel caught his shoulder.

"Brook."

"I'm fine."

"You're bleeding."

Brook touched his nose.

Blood.

Great.

The ridge shook again.

This time the two roads pushed at once.

White light and black fire slammed toward the center.

The impact split the ridge directly beneath the group.

Henry screamed.

Again.

"Not again!" Crowley shouted.

Brook looked down.

Henry was standing on a piece of stone separating from the ridge.

The slab tilted.

Henry slipped.

Brook reached toward him.

No mark.

Nothing.

Michael's power was spent.

One jump.

One mark.

One chance.

Brook could not teleport again.

Henry fell.

Charon moved first.

He launched himself forward.

Too slow.

Sera threw up both hands.

Words exploded from her mouth.

"STOP!"

The stone hesitated.

Only for a second.

Henry grabbed the edge.

Brook ran.

Crowley ran beside him.

Gabriel moved toward the collapsing white road.

Tala dropped to her knees and pressed both hands against the stone.

"Please."

The Earth did not answer her.

Not because it couldn't.

Because it refused.

The ridge began collapsing everywhere.

Brook reached Henry.

Crowley grabbed Brook's jacket.

Brook grabbed Henry's wrist.

"Pull!"

Together, they dragged him upward.

The moment Henry cleared the edge—

The entire ridge stopped.

Everyone froze.

The white road disappeared.

Not faded.

Gone.

The black road followed.

Hellfire sank into the stone.

The cracks closed.

The sky remained blue.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Crowley looked at Gabriel.

"Well."

Gabriel looked back.

"Yes."

"That was yours."

"No."

Crowley pointed toward where the staircase had been.

"Angel."

"That was Heaven."

"And you're Heaven."

Gabriel looked toward Brook.

"Not entirely."

Crowley's smile disappeared.

Nobody liked that answer.

Brook sat heavily against a rock.

His body still hadn't recovered from the jump.

Henry sat beside him.

"You teleported."

Brook looked at him.

"I know."

"That was amazing."

"I almost threw up."

"You did throw up."

Brook looked down.

Henry was right.

"Shut up."

Henry smiled.

It didn't last.

Tala was still kneeling.

Her hands pressed against the ground.

Brook walked toward her.

"Tala."

She didn't answer.

He crouched beside her.

"What happened?"

Tala finally lifted her head.

Her eyes were wet.

Brook had never seen her look frightened like this.

Not really.

"They both tried to use the Earth."

Gabriel heard her.

Crowley did too.

The humor disappeared from both of them.

Tala looked toward the sky.

Then toward the ground.

"Heaven wanted a road."

She looked at the blackened stone where Hell had tried to rise.

"Hell wanted one too."

Brook understood.

"And?"

Tala looked at him.

"And neither one got it."

A cold wind moved across the ridge.

Hutena finally spoke.

"They'll try again."

Everyone turned toward her.

She stood several meters away.

Her eyes were unfocused.

Brook immediately felt his stomach tighten.

"Hutena?"

She blinked.

Once.

Twice.

Then she looked directly at Brook.

"Not here."

"What?"

"Not here."

Gabriel slowly turned north.

Brook followed his eyes.

Far beyond the ridge—

Beyond the ruined road—

Beyond the broken trees—

Something stood against the horizon.

White.

Still.

Impossible to judge from this distance.

A tree.

Crowley squinted.

"That wasn't there yesterday."

Gabriel stopped breathing.

Not dramatically.

Just—

Stopped.

Brook noticed.

"Gabriel?"

The angel didn't answer.

The wind moved again.

Nobody moved with it.

Gabriel stared at the white shape on the horizon.

Crowley looked between him and the tree.

"Oh, that's never good."

Brook stood.

His legs still hurt from the teleport.

His head hurt.

Something inside him was too quiet.

And now the road north had changed.

Gabriel finally spoke.

One word.

"Eden."

Nobody answered.

Because immediately after he said it—

Something moved beneath the white tree.

And started coming toward them.
