Chapter 241 - Devil Instincts

Chapter 241 — Devil's Instinct

The first thing Brook heard was Gabriel shouting his name.

The second was steel breaking.

Brook turned toward the sound just as an angel crashed through the remains of a dead tree and rolled down the slope.

The morning had begun quietly.

That was gone.

Xcution had barely finished breaking camp when the scouts appeared.

Five figures.

White armor.

No banners.

No warning.

They had come over the northern ridge with the sun behind them, moving fast enough that Henry had almost mistaken them for travelers.

Then Gabriel had seen them.

And everything changed.

"Down!" Gabriel shouted.

Brook dropped.

A blade of light passed over his head.

It struck the rock behind him.

The entire ridge exploded.

Henry screamed.

Charon grabbed him and dragged him behind a broken stone shelf.

Sera threw up one hand.

A barrier flashed into existence just as fragments of rock tore across the camp.

Crowley was already moving.

"Gabriel!"

"I see them!"

"No, you see your old coworkers! Kill them!"

Gabriel ignored him.

Brook came up from the ground.

One of the scouts was rushing Henry's position.

Brook moved.

There was no thought before it.

No plan.

No decision.

One second he was standing beside the shattered remains of the campfire.

The next, he was running.

The angel turned.

Brook's blade met his.

The impact traveled up both arms.

The scout was stronger than Brook expected.

Brook was pushed backward.

The angel stepped forward.

Brook ducked the second strike.

His sword cut across white armor.

The angel hissed and stumbled.

Brook hit him again.

Once.

Twice.

The third strike knocked the angel to the ground.

"Brook!"

Gabriel's voice came from somewhere behind him.

Brook barely heard it.

Something was wrong.

The angel beneath him was alive.

Brook could see that.

He was trying to rise.

Trying to reach for his weapon.

Trying—

Brook drove his boot into the angel's chest.

The armor cracked.

The angel fell back.

And something inside Brook answered.

A pulse.

Hot.

Violent.

Immediate.

Brook froze.

His heart slammed against his ribs.

The world sharpened.

Every sound became clearer.

Henry breathing behind the rocks.

Sera's barrier cracking.

Charon's claws scraping stone.

Crowley's footsteps.

Gabriel's wings.

The angel beneath Brook.

His heartbeat.

Brook could hear it.

Feel it.

And suddenly—

He wanted it to stop.

Brook's hand tightened around his sword.

The thought wasn't calm.

It wasn't logical.

It didn't come with words.

It was hunger.

The desire to remove the problem in front of him before the problem could become dangerous again.

Brook raised his blade.

"Brook!"

Crowley hit him.

Hard.

Brook barely moved.

Crowley stopped.

Brook slowly turned his head.

Crowley stared at him.

"…Well."

Brook looked at him.

Crowley took one careful step back.

"That's not good."

Brook attacked.

Crowley barely blocked.

Steel crashed.

Crowley's boots tore through the dirt as Brook drove him backward.

"Brook!"

Gabriel landed between them.

Brook swung.

Gabriel caught the blade.

Light erupted between Gabriel's hands and the steel.

Brook stared at him.

Gabriel stared back.

"Stop."

Brook pushed harder.

Gabriel's feet slid across the ground.

"Brook."

The pressure inside him rose.

Gabriel was in the way.

That was all.

The thought came cleanly.

Not Gabriel.

Not someone he trusted.

Not someone who had crossed worlds to find his brothers.

Just—

Something blocking the next movement.

Brook's eyes widened.

He tried to pull back.

His body went forward.

Gabriel saw it happen.

"Crowley!"

Crowley didn't hesitate.

He slammed into Brook from the side.

All three of them hit the ground.

Brook rolled first.

He came up with his sword already raised.

Crowley was closer.

So Crowley became the target.

The world narrowed.

Crowley saw it.

"Oh, hell."

Brook moved.

Crowley blocked the first strike.

The second.

The third.

Then Brook hit him in the ribs.

Crowley staggered.

Brook followed.

A punch.

Crowley's head snapped sideways.

Another.

Crowley fell against a tree.

Brook grabbed him by the throat.

Lifted him.

Crowley's feet left the ground.

"Brook!"

Gabriel was behind him again.

Brook didn't turn.

Crowley's lifeline appeared.

Brook stopped.

A thin line of light stretched from Crowley's body into the darkness beyond sight.

It pulsed.

Alive.

Brook stared.

Another line appeared.

Gabriel.

Henry.

Sera.

Charon.

The injured angel.

Every living thing around him.

Threads.

Hundreds of invisible lives suddenly visible.

Brook's breathing stopped.

Crowley was still struggling in his hand.

Brook barely noticed.

The line was too bright.

Too close.

And something inside him reacted.

Not with hunger this time.

With knowledge.

Brook could feel the difference between the line existing—

and the line ending.

His stomach twisted.

"No."

The word escaped him.

Crowley stopped fighting.

Brook's fingers shook around his throat.

The instinct surged.

Finish it.

Brook's grip tightened.

Crowley looked directly into his eyes.

Blood ran from Crowley's forehead.

He should have been afraid.

Instead, he smiled.

"Go ahead."

Brook's eyes narrowed.

Crowley coughed.

"Come on."

Brook's hand shook harder.

Crowley whispered:

"Do it."

Something cracked inside Brook.

Not physically.

The red pressure faltered.

For one second, Brook could see what he was doing.

Crowley.

In his hand.

The lifeline burning.

Brook released him.

Crowley hit the ground.

Brook stumbled backward.

The injured angel moved.

Brook's head snapped toward him.

The instinct returned instantly.

The angel froze.

Brook saw the fear on his face.

And the red came back.

Brook moved toward him.

Gabriel stepped in front of the angel.

Brook stopped.

Gabriel didn't raise his weapon.

Didn't attack.

He simply stood there.

"Move."

Brook's voice sounded wrong.

Gabriel's wings remained folded.

"No."

Brook took another step.

Gabriel didn't move.

Behind him, the injured scout was trying to crawl away.

Brook could hear every movement.

Every heartbeat.

Every breath.

The lifeline.

The instinct.

Everything at once.

"Brook," Gabriel said.

"Move."

"No."

Brook screamed.

He swung.

Gabriel caught his wrist.

Brook punched him.

Gabriel flew backward.

The scout screamed.

Brook went after him.

Crowley hit him again.

This time Brook turned immediately.

The instinct welcomed the new target.

Crowley attacked first.

Brook blocked.

Crowley struck again.

Brook ducked.

The next punch hit Brook's jaw.

Pain exploded through his face.

Brook smiled.

Crowley froze.

"Don't do that."

Brook lunged.

Crowley barely avoided the blade.

Brook drove him backward.

One strike.

Two.

Three.

Crowley's weapon flew from his hand.

Brook grabbed him.

Slammed him into the ground.

Crowley reached for Brook's throat.

Brook caught his arm.

Pinned it.

The lifeline appeared again.

Bright.

Waiting.

Brook raised his sword.

Crowley looked at him.

"Brook."

For the first time—

Crowley's voice changed.

Not fear.

Something worse.

Recognition.

Crowley knew Brook wasn't fighting him anymore.

Brook heard Henry scream his name.

He heard Sera shouting.

He heard Charon growling.

He heard Gabriel getting back to his feet.

And underneath all of it—

Brook heard the fire.

The violence.

The instinct.

The thing inside him demanding that every threat become a corpse.

Brook's sword began to fall.

"No!"

Brook stopped it.

The blade hovered inches above Crowley's throat.

Brook screamed.

His entire body shook.

The instinct pushed.

Brook pushed back.

For one impossible second, neither won.

Then Brook threw the sword away.

It landed several meters from them.

The red vanished.

Brook collapsed.

He rolled onto his side.

Vomited into the grass.

Nobody spoke.

The surviving scouts had stopped attacking.

Gabriel looked at them.

They looked at Brook.

Then at Crowley.

Gabriel raised one hand.

"Leave."

One scout looked at the injured angel.

Gabriel stepped aside.

"Take him."

Crowley slowly sat up.

"You're letting them go?"

Gabriel didn't look at him.

"They came for me."

Crowley laughed painfully.

"They came for him too."

Gabriel's expression darkened.

The scouts carried their injured companion.

Brook watched through blurred vision.

None of them looked victorious.

None of them looked defeated.

They looked afraid.

Brook hated that.

Because he understood why.

The scouts disappeared over the ridge.

The camp became quiet.

Too quiet.

Brook sat up.

His hands were covered in dirt.

And Crowley's blood.

Brook stared at them.

"What happened?"

Crowley looked at him.

"You tried to kill me."

Brook swallowed.

"I know."

"You tried to kill one of Gabriel's people."

Brook closed his eyes.

"I know."

Crowley waited.

Brook opened his eyes again.

"And I liked it."

Nobody moved.

Brook looked away.

The truth hurt worse than the instinct.

"I didn't want to," he said.

Gabriel approached.

"But part of you did."

Brook looked at him.

Gabriel didn't sound accusing.

That somehow made it worse.

Brook's consciousness slipped.

The ridge vanished.

Darkness.

Brook stood inside his inner world.

Michael was waiting.

Lucifer stood farther away.

Death remained separate from both of them.

Brook looked directly at Lucifer.

"That was you."

Lucifer's smile was small.

Not proud.

Not apologetic.

"That was the Instinct."

Brook's hands clenched.

Lucifer's eyes sharpened.

"Mine."

Brook stepped forward.

"You almost made me kill them."

Lucifer's expression disappeared.

"No."

Brook stopped.

Lucifer took one step closer.

"I gave you the Instinct."

The darkness around him seemed to heat.

"I did not take your hands."

Brook stared at him.

Lucifer's voice lowered.

"Mine. Not your excuse."

The words landed harder than an attack.

Brook looked away.

Michael spoke.

"You still moved."

Brook turned.

Michael remained calm.

Too calm.

"You chose every step."

Brook shook his head.

"I couldn't stop."

"But you did."

Brook remembered Crowley beneath him.

The sword.

The lifeline.

The moment before the blade fell.

Michael continued.

"The power can push."

His eyes moved briefly toward Lucifer.

"It cannot become your decision for you."

Lucifer gave a humorless smile.

"Unfortunately."

Brook looked toward Death.

Death had not moved.

Brook could still see the lifelines.

Faintly.

In the darkness.

Threads stretching through a world that shouldn't have contained life.

"I saw them."

Death watched him.

Brook swallowed.

"The lines."

For a long moment, Death said nothing.

Then:

"You saw the line."

Brook waited.

Death's presence seemed to deepen.

"You did not take it."

Brook looked down.

"Could I?"

Death did not answer.

Not directly.

"Seeing is not cutting."

Brook lifted his eyes.

Death remained apart.

"Do not mistake knowledge for permission."

The darkness trembled.

Brook looked at Michael.

Then Lucifer.

Then Death.

Three powers.

Three wills.

None of them his.

All of them inside him.

Brook suddenly understood why the fight had terrified Crowley.

Why Gabriel had looked at him differently.

Why the scouts had run.

He wasn't simply carrying power.

He was carrying things that could change what he became.

And he was the only one standing between them and everyone else.

Brook opened his eyes.

Henry was kneeling beside him.

"You passed out."

Brook blinked.

"How long?"

"Maybe thirty seconds."

Crowley stood nearby with one hand against his ribs.

"Long enough for me to consider tying you to a tree."

Brook looked at him.

"Sorry."

Crowley stared.

Brook looked away.

"I know that doesn't fix it."

"No."

Crowley picked up his weapon.

"But it's a start."

Gabriel turned toward the northern horizon.

Brook followed his gaze.

Black fire was rising beyond the ridge.

Not ordinary fire.

Brook knew that immediately.

It didn't spread through the grass.

The grass beneath it remained untouched.

The flames climbed upward as though the sky itself were burning.

The temperature dropped.

Charon moved behind Sera.

Henry whispered:

"What is that?"

Crowley's face hardened.

Brook stood slowly.

The instinct stirred beneath his skin.

Brook noticed it.

He forced his breathing steady.

Crowley saw.

"You feel that?"

Brook nodded.

Gabriel's wings shifted.

"Hell."

The word moved through the group.

Nobody spoke for a moment.

Then Brook looked at Crowley.

"Your people?"

Crowley laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

"Hell doesn't have my people."

The black fire continued rising.

A deep sound rolled across the land.

Something enormous opening.

Something answering.

Brook's lifeline sight flickered.

For a second, he saw threads in the distance.

Too many.

Then they vanished.

Brook's stomach tightened.

Gabriel stepped beside him.

"They felt it."

"What?"

Gabriel looked at Brook.

"The fight."

Crowley shook his head.

"No."

Everyone looked at him.

Crowley's eyes remained fixed on the black fire.

"They felt what he carries."

Brook tightened his grip on his weapon.

The instinct shifted again.

Waiting.

Lucifer's words remained in his mind.

Mine. Not your excuse.

Brook breathed in.

Then out.

Hell's fire climbed higher.

Brook looked toward it.

"They can feel whatever they want."

Crowley glanced at him.

Brook started walking.

"But they don't get to decide what I belong to."

For the first time since the scouts arrived, Crowley smiled.

A small, dangerous smile.

"Good."

Behind them, Xcution gathered their weapons.

Ahead of them, Hell opened its first answer.

And somewhere beyond the black fire—

something was coming for Brook.
