Chapter 217 - The Forgotten

Chapter 217 — The Forgotten

Brook had stopped asking questions.

For the moment.

Not because he had run out of them.

He had too many.

Who was Gabriel really?

Why had Michael gone silent?

Why had Lucifer reacted the way he did?

Why had Heaven come looking for something inside him?

Why was the Earth recognizing him?

And what exactly was the fourth mark becoming?

The questions kept piling up.

Brook had learned something, though.

Sometimes asking a question didn't make the answer come faster.

Sometimes it only made everyone around him more uncomfortable.

So he sat quietly on the stone steps of the courtyard.

Gabriel stood nearby.

Crowley was leaning against a pillar.

Sera and Henry were talking quietly.

Tala remained close to the courtyard wall.

For several minutes, nothing happened.

Then Brook felt something.

Not pain.

Not the burning of a Source.

Something else.

A pressure behind his eyes.

He frowned.

Gabriel noticed immediately.

"You all right?"

Brook rubbed his temple.

"Yeah."

Gabriel didn't look convinced.

"What is it?"

"I don't know."

Brook closed his eyes.

The pressure increased.

He could hear something.

Not a voice.

A sound.

Like distant metal scraping against stone.

He opened his eyes.

The courtyard looked exactly the same.

Everyone was still there.

Nothing had changed.

Yet Brook couldn't shake the feeling that something was trying to reach him.

He stood.

Gabriel straightened.

"What are you doing?"

"Nothing."

Brook took a step.

Then another.

His feet carried him toward the center of the courtyard.

The pressure grew stronger.

He stopped.

His fourth mark remained quiet.

That was strange.

Usually, when something related to his Sources happened, one of the marks reacted.

This time—

nothing.

Brook closed his eyes again.

The sound returned.

Scrape.

Pause.

Scrape.

Pause.

Then—

a whisper.

Not words.

Just a feeling.

A place.

A door.

Something buried.

Brook's breathing slowed.

He didn't know why, but he knew the sensation.

It felt like remembering something he had never consciously remembered.

His hand tightened.

"I've been here."

Gabriel's head lifted.

"What?"

Brook looked around.

"I've seen this place."

Crowley pushed away from the pillar.

"Brook."

"I don't mean Asteria."

Brook stared at the stones beneath his feet.

"I mean…"

He struggled to find the words.

"Something underneath it."

Tala's expression changed.

She stepped closer.

"The Earth?"

Brook shook his head.

"No."

He placed a hand against his chest.

"Me."

Silence.

The pressure behind his eyes became stronger.

A flicker crossed his vision.

Not enough to form an image.

Only pieces.

A hallway.

Stone walls.

A door.

A hand.

Something written across the floor.

Brook's breathing stopped.

He knew the hand.

He didn't know whose it was.

He knew the door.

He didn't know where it led.

He knew the feeling.

Fear.

Not the fear of being attacked.

The fear of knowing something you desperately wanted to forget.

Brook took another step.

Gabriel moved.

"Brook."

Brook didn't hear him.

The hallway appeared again.

Closer.

A voice seemed to come from somewhere beyond the door.

Brook couldn't understand the words.

He reached toward it.

His fingers almost touched the memory—

"Brook."

Gabriel's voice was sharper this time.

Brook stopped.

The vision vanished.

He opened his eyes.

Gabriel was standing directly in front of him.

Brook blinked.

"What?"

"Don't."

Brook frowned.

"Don't what?"

"Go further."

The words were quiet.

But there was something in Gabriel's voice Brook hadn't heard before.

Concern.

Real concern.

Brook stared at him.

"You know what that was."

Gabriel didn't answer.

"Gabriel."

"I know enough."

"Then tell me."

"Not here."

"Why?"

Gabriel glanced around the courtyard.

At the Earth beneath them.

At the sky above.

Then back to Brook.

"Because whatever you just touched wasn't ready to be found."

Brook's jaw tightened.

"You keep saying that."

"I know."

"Everyone keeps hiding things from me."

Gabriel's expression softened.

"I'm not trying to hide it."

"Then what are you doing?"

"Keeping you from tearing open something you don't understand."

Brook stared at him.

"What if I want to understand?"

"Then you will."

"When?"

Gabriel hesitated.

"When you're ready to remember without letting the memory remember you."

Brook went quiet.

The sentence disturbed him.

He didn't know exactly what it meant.

But he understood enough to know Gabriel wasn't joking.

Crowley approached.

"What happened?"

Gabriel looked at him.

"Something in Brook reacted."

Crowley's eyes moved toward Brook.

"Which Source?"

"None."

Crowley frowned.

"None?"

Gabriel shook his head.

"This wasn't a Source."

Tala's expression became serious.

"Then what was it?"

Gabriel looked at Brook.

"Something that was already inside him."

Brook's stomach tightened.

"Inside me?"

Gabriel nodded.

"Something buried."

Crowley immediately looked at Brook.

"How buried?"

Gabriel didn't answer.

Crowley's expression darkened.

"Gabriel."

"I don't know."

Crowley stared at him.

"You seem to be saying that a lot."

Gabriel accepted the criticism.

"Because I don't know."

Brook looked between them.

"I saw a door."

Crowley said nothing.

"A hallway."

Still nothing.

"A hand."

Gabriel's eyes narrowed.

Brook noticed.

"You know something."

"I recognize the signs."

"Of what?"

Gabriel hesitated.

Then—

"Something being sealed."

Brook stared at him.

"By who?"

Gabriel shook his head.

"I don't know."

"Michael?"

"No."

"Lucifer?"

"No."

"The Maker?"

Gabriel paused.

"I don't know."

Brook exhaled sharply.

"Of course."

Gabriel stepped closer.

"Listen to me."

Brook looked at him.

"Whatever you saw, don't chase it."

"Why?"

"Because memories aren't always passive."

Brook frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Gabriel looked toward the place where Brook had been standing.

"Some memories are just memories."

He paused.

"Others were buried for a reason."

Brook said nothing.

Gabriel continued.

"If something was sealed inside you, forcing it open could change more than what you remember."

Brook looked down.

His hands were trembling slightly.

He closed them.

"Did I put it there?"

"I don't know."

"Did someone else?"

"I don't know."

"Was it meant to protect me?"

Gabriel's expression became unreadable.

"I don't know."

Brook laughed bitterly.

"You're really starting to annoy me."

Gabriel smiled faintly.

"That's fair."

Brook looked toward Crowley.

Crowley didn't have an answer either.

That scared Brook more than anything.

Crowley always had something.

A joke.

A warning.

A secret.

A piece of history.

This time, he was silent.

Tala approached Brook.

"The Earth didn't react to it."

Brook looked at her.

"What does that mean?"

"It means whatever you touched isn't part of the fourth mark."

Brook nodded slowly.

"Then it's something else."

"Yes."

The courtyard became quiet again.

Brook looked toward Gabriel.

"Will it happen again?"

Gabriel didn't lie.

"Probably."

Brook sighed.

"Great."

"But next time," Gabriel said, "you won't be alone."

Brook looked at him.

Gabriel's expression was calm.

"If it happens again, don't follow it."

"Even if I see the answer?"

"Especially then."

Brook studied him.

"Why?"

Gabriel looked directly into his eyes.

"Because some answers are dangerous before you know what question they belong to."

Brook didn't respond.

For once, he accepted the warning.

Not because he trusted Gabriel completely.

He didn't.

But because Gabriel had stopped him before he crossed whatever invisible line had appeared.

And Gabriel had done it without force.

Without commanding him.

Without treating him like a weapon.

Just—

stopped him.

Brook looked toward the ground.

The strange sensation had disappeared.

The hallway was gone.

The door was gone.

The hand was gone.

Nothing remained.

But Brook knew something now.

There was something in his past that had been hidden.

Not forgotten naturally.

Buried.

And someone had made sure he couldn't reach it.

Brook looked at Gabriel one final time.

"You know more than you're telling me."

Gabriel nodded.

"Yes."

Brook sighed.

"At least you're honest."

Gabriel smiled.

"I told you."

Brook looked toward the sky.

"I'll remember eventually."

Gabriel followed his gaze.

"Yes."

"And when I do?"

Gabriel was quiet.

Then he answered:

"Then we'll deal with what you remember."

Brook nodded.

The pressure behind his eyes was gone.

The courtyard returned to normal.

The Earth remained quiet.

The sky remained open.

And whatever had been buried inside Brook remained exactly where it had been.

Waiting.

Not ready.

Not forgotten anymore.

Just—

unopened.
