Chapter 216 - Tala

Chapter 216 — Tala

Tala had been watching Gabriel since he arrived.

Not constantly.

Not obviously.

But enough.

She had watched the way he spoke to Brook.

The way he spoke to Crowley.

The way he looked at the Earth.

And she had noticed something that none of them seemed to understand yet.

Gabriel was not afraid of the Earth.

But the Earth was not comfortable with him.

That difference mattered.

Tala stood near the edge of the courtyard with one hand resting against the stone wall.

The stone was warm beneath her palm.

Asteria had begun settling again.

People were slowly returning to their homes.

The streets were quieter.

The strange pressure in the sky had weakened.

But the Earth hadn't forgotten.

It still carried the sensation of Heaven's arrival.

Tala closed her eyes.

She listened.

Roots beneath the city.

Water beneath the streets.

Stone beneath the buildings.

Life moving through soil.

The Earth was speaking.

Not with words.

It never had.

It communicated through movement.

Pressure.

Memory.

Recognition.

And right now—

it was uncertain.

Tala opened her eyes.

Gabriel was speaking with Brook again.

He seemed relaxed.

Almost peaceful.

That was what made Tala uneasy.

Heaven had arrived in Asteria.

An archangel stood among them.

And somehow, Gabriel seemed like the least worried person there.

Tala approached.

Brook noticed first.

"Tala."

She nodded.

Gabriel turned toward her.

"Tala."

She stopped.

"You know my name."

"I've heard it."

"From who?"

Gabriel smiled.

"People talk."

Tala didn't smile.

"People talk too much."

Gabriel laughed softly.

"That's true."

Brook looked between them.

"Is something wrong?"

Tala ignored the question.

She looked at Gabriel.

"Do you feel it?"

Gabriel's expression changed.

"The Earth?"

"Yes."

He looked down.

"I feel something."

"That's not what I asked."

Gabriel studied her.

Then nodded.

"Yes."

Tala stepped closer.

"Does it accept you?"

Gabriel didn't answer.

That was answer enough.

"No."

Tala looked toward Brook.

"Exactly."

Brook frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Tala faced him.

"It means Heaven and Earth are not the same thing."

Gabriel remained quiet.

Tala continued.

"Don't confuse them."

Brook glanced upward.

"Why would I?"

"Because you're standing between them."

Her eyes moved to his fourth mark.

"And that makes you vulnerable to both."

Brook looked down at his arm.

"The Earth recognized me."

"Yes."

"Then what's the problem?"

"The problem is that you may start thinking recognition means ownership."

Brook looked at her.

Tala's voice softened.

"The Earth doesn't belong to you."

"I know."

"Do you?"

Brook didn't answer.

Tala placed her hand against the stone wall again.

"It recognizes you because something inside you belongs to the same order as it does."

Gabriel watched her.

Tala noticed.

"Don't let him explain it for you."

Brook looked at Gabriel.

Gabriel raised both hands slightly.

"I wasn't going to."

Tala nodded.

"Good."

She turned back to Brook.

"You need to understand something before that fourth mark develops further."

Brook waited.

"The Earth has its own will."

Gabriel's expression became more serious.

Tala continued.

"You cannot command it simply because you carry its Source."

Brook frowned.

"Then what am I supposed to do?"

"Listen."

"To the Earth?"

"Yes."

"And if it doesn't answer?"

Tala looked at him.

"Then you wait."

Brook sighed.

"Everyone keeps telling me to wait."

Tala almost smiled.

"Maybe you should."

Gabriel chuckled.

Brook gave him a look.

"Don't encourage her."

"I wasn't."

"You were."

"I was."

Tala smiled faintly.

Then the ground beneath them pulsed.

All three stopped.

Brook immediately looked down.

Tala closed her eyes.

Gabriel looked toward the ground.

The pulse came again.

Stronger.

Tala's expression changed.

"Something is wrong."

Brook stepped toward her.

"What?"

"The Earth is confused."

"Because of Gabriel?"

Tala hesitated.

"Partly."

Gabriel nodded.

"I expected that."

Brook looked at him.

"You expected the Earth to reject you?"

"Not reject."

Gabriel looked toward Tala.

"Question."

Tala studied him.

"That's a better word."

Brook frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Tala answered:

"The Earth doesn't know what you are."

Gabriel's expression became thoughtful.

"And I don't know what it is becoming."

For a moment, Tala and Gabriel simply looked at each other.

Neither challenged the other.

Neither trusted the other completely.

But both understood something.

They were looking at the same mystery from opposite directions.

Tala turned to Brook.

"Whatever happens next, don't let Heaven define your fourth mark."

Brook nodded.

"And if the Earth changes?"

"Don't let anyone else define it either."

She looked directly into his eyes.

"Not Heaven."

A pause.

"Not Hell."

Another.

"Not Gabriel."

Brook understood.

"Not you?"

Tala smiled.

"Especially not me."

Brook nodded.

Tala removed her hand from the wall.

"The Earth has recognized you."

She looked toward Gabriel.

"And Heaven has recognized something inside you."

Then back to Brook.

"That doesn't mean either one owns you."

Gabriel gave a small nod.

Crowley, standing farther away, overheard the final sentence.

He smiled.

"Now that's something I can agree with."

Tala looked toward him.

"I wasn't asking."

Crowley shrugged.

"Still true."

Brook looked around the courtyard.

For the first time, the situation seemed clearer.

Not safer.

Not simpler.

Just clearer.

Heaven was not Earth.

Earth was not Heaven.

And he was not the property of either.

The fourth mark pulsed once beneath his skin.

Tala felt it.

Gabriel felt it.

Brook felt it.

Then it stopped.

Tala looked at him.

"Good."

Brook frowned.

"What?"

"It listened."

"To me?"

"No."

She smiled.

"To itself."

And that was the difference Brook still had to learn.

The Earth would not become his servant.

It would not become Heaven's enemy.

It would not become Hell's weapon.

It would remember.

It would recognize.

And when it finally decided what Brook meant to it—

no one else would get to decide for it.
