Chapter 109 - The Key

Chapter 109 — The Key

THE KEY HAS BEEN FOUND.

Nobody moved.

The words remained carved into the wall.

Brook stared at them.

Henry was the first to speak.

"Okay."

Sera looked at him.

"No."

Henry pointed at the words.

"I didn't even say anything yet."

"I know."

"I was going to say something useful."

"No, you weren't."

Henry looked offended.

Brook almost smiled.

Almost.

Then the floor beneath them trembled.

The smile disappeared.

A deep sound moved through the chamber.

Not a roar.

Not footsteps.

Something turning.

Far below them.

Hades looked toward the darkness.

"Everyone leave."

Brook turned.

"What?"

"Now."

The command in Hades's voice was different.

This wasn't the cold king they had been arguing with.

This was fear.

Real fear.

Brook looked at the hole where Crowley had nearly disappeared.

"What's happening?"

Hades walked toward him.

"The chamber is opening."

"To what?"

"I don't know."

Brook stared at him.

"You've lived here how long?"

"Long enough to know when to run."

That was enough.

Brook looked toward the others.

"Move."

They left the chamber.

Fast.

The corridors of the palace were already changing.

Words covered the walls.

Not the careful commands Brook had seen below.

These were appearing wildly.

Across the stone.

Across the ceiling.

Across the floor.

REMEMBER.

RETURN.

OPEN.

FIND.

Sera stopped.

Brook immediately noticed.

"What?"

She looked around.

"The words are confused."

Henry stared at her.

"Words can be confused?"

"Yes."

"How?"

"I don't know!"

A section of the ceiling cracked.

Brook grabbed her arm and pulled her forward.

Stone crashed behind them.

"Figure it out while moving."

"That's what I'm doing!"

They reached the upper palace.

Chaos had reached Remus.

Soldiers ran through the halls.

Servants were gathering civilians inside larger buildings.

Everywhere Brook looked, words had appeared.

On doors.

On windows.

On people's clothes.

Some faded as quickly as they appeared.

Others remained.

A little girl stood beside a soldier.

One word was written across her sleeve.

HOME.

Brook stopped.

The girl looked at him.

"What does it mean?"

Brook looked at the word.

For once—

he didn't have an answer.

Sera stepped forward.

She crouched in front of the girl.

"It means somewhere safe."

The little girl looked around.

"Are we safe?"

Sera hesitated.

Then she held the girl's hand.

"We're trying to make sure you are."

The girl nodded.

Brook watched Sera for a second.

Then the soldier took the child away.

Sera stood.

Her expression had changed.

"What?"

Brook asked.

She looked toward the city.

"The words aren't attacking everyone."

Brook followed her gaze.

"What do you mean?"

"They're responding."

"To what?"

Sera looked at him.

"People."

Hades's soldiers opened the palace gates.

Brook stepped outside.

Remus had changed.

The streets were filled with words.

Entire buildings carried them.

A bakery had one written above its entrance.

HUNGER.

A hospital.

HEAL.

A bridge.

STAND.

Some made sense.

Others didn't.

Brook saw one written across the ground.

DIE.

His hand tightened around his sword.

Henry followed his gaze.

"That's concerning."

The word disappeared.

Then another appeared.

NOT YET.

Henry looked at Brook.

"Less concerning."

Brook looked toward the centre of the city.

A crowd had gathered.

People were shouting.

Hades immediately began walking.

Brook and the others followed.

The problem wasn't an attack.

At least not yet.

A massive gate stood in the middle of the square.

Brook hadn't noticed it when they first arrived in Remus.

Now it was impossible to miss.

The gate was covered in symbols.

Thirteen of them.

Citizens stood behind a line of soldiers.

A woman was screaming at one of the guards.

"Move!"

The guard held his position.

"No one goes through!"

"My son is outside!"

Brook stopped.

The woman pointed toward the gate.

"He went hunting this morning."

Henry looked at Hades.

"The gate leads outside?"

Hades nodded.

"Into the surrounding lands."

The woman grabbed the guard's arm.

"Please."

The guard looked toward Hades.

Hades approached.

The woman immediately recognized him.

"Your Majesty."

Her voice broke.

"My son."

Hades looked at the gate.

One of the symbols was glowing.

Then another.

The woman saw it.

"Open it."

Hades didn't answer.

"Please!"

Brook looked at the gate.

"Why can't she leave?"

Hades's face remained cold.

"Because the borders are unstable."

Brook looked at him.

"And?"

"If she leaves, she may not come back."

The woman stared at Hades.

"My son is out there."

Sera stepped closer to the gate.

Brook followed.

She examined the symbols.

Then stopped.

One word had appeared beneath them.

CHOOSE.

Sera looked back.

"Brook."

He saw it.

The woman saw it too.

"What does that mean?"

Nobody answered.

Then the symbols moved.

The gate slowly began opening.

People screamed.

Soldiers raised their weapons.

Beyond it—

there was no forest.

Only darkness.

The woman stepped forward.

The guards stopped her.

"Wait!"

She struggled.

"My son!"

Brook looked through the darkness.

Death activated.

Lifelines appeared.

Hundreds.

Not monsters.

People.

Then one.

Close.

Moving toward the gate.

Brook narrowed his eyes.

"Wait."

Hades looked at him.

"What?"

Brook stepped forward.

"I see someone."

The darkness shifted.

A boy stumbled through the gate.

The woman screamed.

"Ronan!"

She ran.

The guards moved to stop her.

Brook raised his hand.

"Let her go."

Hades looked at him.

The boy fell.

His mother reached him first.

She dropped to her knees.

Holding him.

Crying.

Brook watched.

Then he noticed something.

The boy's lifeline.

It was broken.

Not cut.

Bent.

Twisted.

Brook moved closer.

"Don't touch him."

The mother looked up.

"What?"

Brook stared at the boy.

His eyes were open.

But he wasn't looking at anyone.

His mouth moved.

Sera knelt beside him.

"What is he saying?"

Brook leaned closer.

The boy whispered:

"Thirteen."

Henry looked at Crowley.

Crowley stared at the gate.

Brook looked at him.

"Crowley."

Crowley shook his head.

"I don't know."

Brook's voice hardened.

"You've been saying that a lot."

Crowley looked at him.

"I actually don't."

Brook wanted to argue.

But the boy suddenly grabbed Sera's wrist.

Everyone froze.

His eyes focused.

For one second.

Directly on Brook.

"Key."

Brook went still.

The boy smiled.

Then his lifeline snapped.

Brook felt it.

The pain hit his chest.

He stumbled backward.

Sera caught him.

"Brook!"

The mother screamed.

The square went silent.

Brook stared at the boy.

Dead.

Henry stood beside him.

His face had gone pale.

Brook looked toward the gate.

The darkness beyond it was still there.

Then Death appeared beside him.

It is watching.

Brook swallowed.

"Who?"

Death looked toward the darkness.

Not who.

Brook's eyes narrowed.

Death continued.

Where.

The gate began closing.

Hades shouted orders.

"Seal the square!"

Soldiers moved.

"Nobody enters or leaves the city!"

The crowd panicked.

Henry looked toward Brook.

"This isn't good."

Brook nodded.

"No."

Sera remained beside the dead boy.

She slowly removed his hand from her wrist.

Brook watched her.

She wasn't crying.

She looked angry.

Not at the boy.

At herself.

Brook walked toward her.

"Sera."

She stood.

"I heard something."

"What?"

"When he grabbed me."

Brook waited.

Sera looked toward the closed gate.

"A word."

Henry frowned.

"What word?"

Sera's eyes moved to Brook.

Her voice became quiet.

"His name."

The mother was still crying.

Sera shook her head.

"No."

Brook frowned.

"What?"

"The boy's real name wasn't Ronan."

Henry stared.

"What are you talking about?"

Sera pointed toward the mother.

"The word she kept calling him."

"Ronan."

Sera nodded.

"But when he touched me…"

She swallowed.

"The road called him something else."

Brook looked at the gate.

"What?"

Sera hesitated.

Then answered.

"Bearer."

The square seemed to grow colder.

Crowley stepped forward.

"No."

Everyone turned toward him.

Sera stared.

"You know what that means."

Crowley looked at her.

His silence answered first.

Then he nodded.

Brook's jaw tightened.

"Talk."

Crowley looked toward the dead boy.

"The Key doesn't have to be an object."

Sera's expression changed.

Henry looked at Brook.

"Oh."

Crowley continued.

"It can be carried."

Brook slowly turned toward the body.

"That boy?"

Crowley shook his head.

"Not anymore."

Brook felt something move beneath his skin.

Lucifer stirred.

Not happily.

Uneasily.

Michael became silent.

Brook looked toward the gate.

"What happened to it?"

Crowley stared at him.

"I don't know."

Brook laughed once.

No humor in it.

Crowley looked at him.

"I'm serious."

"Then start being useful."

"Brook."

Brook turned.

It was Henry.

Henry looked toward the crowd.

"Look."

The people of Remus were afraid.

A mother was holding her dead son.

Soldiers were surrounding a gate that led into nothing.

Words were appearing everywhere.

And the King of Remus—

didn't know what was happening.

Henry lowered his voice.

"This can't be about us anymore."

Brook looked at him.

Henry continued.

"These people are going to die while we stand here solving another mystery."

Brook said nothing.

Henry looked toward Hades.

"We need to help them."

Hades heard him.

For a moment, the King simply stared.

Then Hades looked toward his soldiers.

"Evacuate the eastern district."

One of them frowned.

"Your Majesty?"

"Now."

"But the gate—"

"Move."

The soldiers obeyed.

Brook watched the city begin moving.

He looked at Henry.

"You have a plan?"

Henry shook his head.

"No."

Brook frowned.

Henry met his eyes.

"But Sera does."

Sera looked up.

"What?"

Henry pointed at the city.

"You said the words are responding to people."

Sera understood.

Slowly.

Then she looked at Hades.

"The city isn't malfunctioning."

Hades turned.

"What?"

Sera pointed toward the dead boy.

"The road is trying to communicate."

Brook looked at the words around them.

"With what?"

Sera looked toward the twelve symbols on the gate.

Then toward the place where the thirteenth should have been.

"With all of us."

A word appeared in the sky.

Not on stone.

Not on a wall.

Above Remus.

Every person in the city saw it.

One word.

GATHER.

The entire city went silent.

Then people began screaming.

Hades stared upward.

Brook looked toward him.

"That seems pretty clear."

Hades didn't answer.

Another word appeared.

BEFORE.

Sera's face changed.

Brook looked upward.

The final word began forming.

Slowly.

Letters carving themselves through the clouds.

Henry whispered:

"Before what?"

The city waited.

The word finished.

THE MAKER.

For the first time since Brook had arrived in Remus—

Lucifer sounded afraid.

Brook.

Brook stared into the sky.

"What?"

Lucifer's voice was quiet.

We need to leave. Now.
