Chapter 108 - Thirteen

Chapter 108 — Thirteen

For a moment after the doorway disappeared, nobody spoke.

The chamber was quiet again.

Too quiet.

Brook stood before the symbol carved into the stone.

He didn't touch it.

Sera was beside him, studying it.

Henry stood a few steps back.

Hades hadn't moved.

Crowley was staring at the symbol as if he had seen a ghost.

Brook looked at him.

"You've got about ten seconds."

Crowley didn't answer.

"To explain."

Still nothing.

Henry glanced between them.

"He's counting in his head."

Brook didn't look away from Crowley.

"Nine."

Crowley exhaled.

"You wouldn't believe me."

"Try me."

"Eight."

"Brook."

"Seven."

Crowley finally turned.

"That symbol isn't supposed to exist."

Brook stared at him.

"That is not an explanation."

"I know."

"Then give me one."

Crowley looked toward the stone again.

"It belongs to a thirteenth sanctuary."

Silence.

Henry blinked.

"There were only supposed to be twelve."

Crowley nodded.

"I know."

Sera looked at him.

"Then why is there a thirteenth symbol?"

Crowley's jaw tightened.

"Because the people who built the twelve lied."

Hades moved.

Not toward Crowley.

Toward the symbol.

His footsteps echoed through the chamber.

"You are certain?"

Crowley looked at him.

"Yes."

Hades studied the carving.

"How?"

Crowley hesitated.

Brook immediately noticed.

"Don't."

Crowley looked at him.

"What?"

"Don't start deciding which part of the truth we can handle."

The words landed harder than Brook intended.

Crowley went quiet.

Henry looked down.

Sera watched Brook.

Hades continued staring at the symbol.

Crowley finally spoke.

"I saw it when Aldric was still alive."

Brook's expression changed.

"Where?"

"Not here."

"Where?"

Crowley looked toward the black pool.

"Shinokuni-01."

Brook frowned.

Hades slowly turned.

"Impossible."

Crowley nodded.

"That's what Aldric said."

Sera stepped closer.

"Tell us everything."

Crowley gave a humorless laugh.

"You think that's going to make this better?"

"No," she said.

"But it'll make us less blind."

Crowley looked at her.

Then nodded once.

Years seemed to pass across his face.

"Aldric discovered something beneath Shinokuni-01."

Brook became still.

Crowley continued.

"It wasn't the road. Not completely."

"What was it?"

"A chamber."

Henry frowned.

"Another secret underground chamber?"

Crowley looked at him.

"Apparently people who built the world had a thing for hiding things."

Henry nodded.

"Fair."

The joke didn't completely break the tension.

But it gave them a breath.

Crowley continued.

"There were twelve symbols on the walls."

Brook looked at the carving.

"And the thirteenth?"

Crowley swallowed.

"It appeared while we were there."

Sera's eyes narrowed.

"Just appeared?"

"Yes."

"What caused it?"

Crowley looked at Brook.

"Someone arrived."

Brook stared.

"Who?"

Crowley didn't answer.

Henry's expression changed.

"Someone important?"

Crowley looked away.

"Someone dead."

The chamber seemed colder.

Brook stepped toward him.

"Who?"

Crowley met his eyes.

"Captain Mercer."

Brook stopped.

Henry's head lifted sharply.

Sera's expression changed.

"Crowley…"

"He was alive then," Crowley said.

"I know."

Brook's voice was quiet.

"What happened?"

Crowley stared at the symbol.

"Mercer found the chamber before I did."

Hades watched him carefully.

Crowley continued.

"He touched the wall."

Brook's expression hardened.

"And?"

"The thirteenth symbol appeared."

Nobody spoke.

Henry finally asked:

"Why are you only telling us this now?"

Crowley looked at him.

"Because Aldric ordered me not to."

Henry stepped forward.

"He's dead."

Crowley nodded.

"I know."

"Then why keep protecting his secrets?"

Crowley had no answer.

And for the first time, Henry's voice lost its humor.

"People are dead because of secrets."

Crowley looked at him.

Henry pointed toward Brook.

"Kael is dead."

Brook went still.

Henry continued.

"Elias betrayed us."

His eyes moved toward Crowley.

"And you're standing here looking like you're still afraid of disappointing a dead king."

Crowley said nothing.

Henry looked away.

"That's stupid."

Crowley flinched.

Not much.

But enough.

Brook noticed.

The symbol suddenly moved.

Everyone turned.

A line carved beneath it began glowing.

Sera immediately stepped forward.

"Wait."

Hades raised a hand.

"Don't touch it."

Sera stopped.

Then looked at him.

"You're not the only person here who understands what's happening."

Hades stared at her.

Sera pointed toward the words around the chamber.

"This isn't the same magic."

Hades frowned.

"What?"

"The symbols around the road were commands."

She pointed toward the thirteenth symbol.

"This isn't a command."

Brook looked at her.

"What is it?"

Sera leaned closer.

Her eyes followed the lines.

"A name."

Crowley whispered:

"No."

Sera looked at him.

"You know it?"

Crowley immediately shook his head.

"No."

But everyone knew he was lying.

Brook started toward him.

Crowley raised his hand.

"Fine."

He closed his eyes.

Then said:

"I don't know the name."

Brook stopped.

Crowley continued.

"But I know what the symbol represents."

Hades's expression darkened.

"What?"

Crowley looked at him.

"The missing place."

A crack ran through the floor.

Henry stepped back.

"Oh, come on."

Another crack.

The symbol glowed brighter.

Sera's eyes widened.

"Everyone move away from it."

Brook looked at her.

"You know what's happening?"

"No."

"Then why—"

"Because I'm trying to figure it out!"

Brook stopped.

Sera stared at the symbol.

She was breathing faster now.

Not because she was afraid.

Because she was thinking.

Brook watched her.

For once, he had no answer.

And neither did Michael.

Lucifer was quiet.

Death simply watched.

Sera pointed toward the writing on the walls.

"Hades."

The king looked at her.

"What?"

"The words."

"What about them?"

"They're responding."

Words had begun appearing across the chamber.

Not glowing.

Writing themselves into the stone.

Sera read them.

TWELVE.

A pause.

Then:

ONE.

Henry looked at her.

"Twelve and one?"

Sera nodded.

"The road isn't counting thirteen sanctuaries."

Brook frowned.

"Then what's it counting?"

Sera looked at the symbol.

"Twelve locks."

Another word appeared.

ONE.

She stared.

"And one…"

The chamber shook.

Brook looked toward her.

"One what?"

Sera swallowed.

"Key."

The silence that followed was different.

Brook slowly turned toward Crowley.

Crowley had gone pale again.

This time, he spoke before anyone could ask.

"Mercer wasn't supposed to survive."

Brook's expression hardened.

"What?"

Crowley shook his head.

"I mean that chamber."

He stepped closer to the symbol.

"The moment he touched it, something happened."

"What?"

Crowley's eyes moved toward the ceiling.

"Everything started collapsing."

Henry frowned.

"And?"

"Aldric ordered me to leave."

Brook stared at him.

"You left Mercer?"

Crowley didn't answer.

Brook's jaw tightened.

"Crowley."

"Yes."

The answer came quietly.

Brook looked away.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Henry stared at Crowley.

Sera's expression softened.

Not forgiveness.

Understanding.

Crowley looked at the floor.

"I could still hear him."

Brook looked back.

Crowley continued.

"Calling for me."

The words caught.

"I left anyway."

Hades turned away.

Brook's anger didn't disappear.

But something else joined it.

He knew what it was like to lose someone.

To replay moments.

To wonder what could have been done differently.

Crowley looked at him.

"You think I don't know what you feel?"

Brook's eyes narrowed.

"Don't."

"I've watched people die."

"Don't compare Kael to—"

"I'm not."

Crowley's voice rose.

Everyone froze.

Crowley rarely raised his voice.

"I'm telling you that I know what it is to live after someone else didn't."

Silence.

Brook stared at him.

Crowley looked exhausted.

"I didn't tell you because every time I remembered that symbol, I remembered leaving him there."

Henry's expression changed.

Sera looked away.

Crowley laughed bitterly.

"Happy now?"

Brook didn't answer.

Crowley continued.

"I wasn't protecting Aldric's secret."

He looked at the symbol.

"I was protecting myself from remembering."

The floor cracked again.

This time the stone split beneath Crowley's feet.

He fell.

Brook moved.

Crowley caught the edge.

Brook reached for him.

Crowley grabbed his wrist.

For a moment, their eyes met.

Brook pulled.

The stone continued collapsing.

Henry rushed forward.

He grabbed Brook around the waist.

"Don't let go!"

Brook pulled harder.

Sera dropped beside them.

"Henry, move left."

"What?"

"Move left!"

Henry did.

The stone shifted.

Brook nearly fell forward.

Crowley slipped.

Brook grabbed his forearm.

Sera looked at the cracks.

"Brook!"

"What?"

"Let go!"

Brook stared at her.

"No."

"You're pulling the entire section down!"

Crowley looked at Brook.

"She's right."

Brook's grip tightened.

"No."

Henry struggled to keep them balanced.

"Brook!"

The chamber shook violently.

Brook could see Crowley's lifeline.

Bright.

Alive.

Then—

another line appeared beneath him.

Something moving.

Fast.

Brook's eyes widened.

"Crowley!"

Crowley looked down.

A black hand emerged from the darkness.

It grabbed his leg.

Crowley screamed.

Brook pulled.

The hand pulled back.

Henry shouted.

"Something has him!"

Sera stood.

She looked toward the walls.

Words.

She scanned them desperately.

Hades moved.

"Stay back."

"No!"

Sera pointed at the writing.

"I know what to do."

Hades looked at her.

"You don't."

"Neither do you!"

For the first time, Hades stopped arguing.

Sera looked at the walls.

Her eyes moved across dozens of words.

Then she found one.

RETURN.

She ran toward it.

Hades moved after her.

"Sera!"

She placed her hand against the word.

"Brook!"

Brook looked at her.

"Say it!"

The word glowed.

Crowley's scream echoed from below.

Brook stared at Sera.

She understood.

"RETURN!"

Nothing happened.

Sera's face fell.

Henry looked at her.

"What now?"

Sera looked at the word.

Then realized.

"The wall isn't listening to me."

Hades stepped forward.

"It listens to intention."

Brook's grip was slipping.

"Then do something!"

Hades stared at the word.

Sera looked at him.

"You said words have weight."

"Yes."

"Then give mine weight."

Hades looked at her.

Sera didn't look away.

"Please."

For one second, Hades hesitated.

Then he placed his hand over hers.

The word burned.

Sera shouted again.

"RETURN!"

The chamber answered.

Crowley's body was violently pulled upward.

The black hand released him.

Brook and Henry dragged him onto solid ground.

The floor collapsed.

Darkness swallowed the place where Crowley had been.

Everyone remained still.

Breathing.

Henry lay on his back.

"Next time."

Nobody answered.

Henry raised a hand.

"Next time we investigate ancient symbols…"

Brook looked down at him.

"Don't."

Henry closed his eyes.

"Yeah."

Crowley slowly sat up.

His leg was bleeding.

Sera approached.

"Let me see."

"I'm fine."

"No, you're not."

Crowley looked at her.

Sera held out her hand.

"Stop pretending."

Crowley stared for a moment.

Then let her examine the wound.

Brook watched.

Sera worked quickly.

Henry sat beside Crowley.

He looked at him.

"You owe me."

Crowley frowned.

"For what?"

Henry gestured toward the hole.

"Not letting you become a ghost."

Crowley gave him a tired look.

Henry smiled.

"You're welcome."

For the first time—

Crowley smiled.

Barely.

But genuinely.

Brook walked toward the edge of the collapsed floor.

Death appeared beside him.

It is still there.

Brook nodded.

"I know."

It knows you now.

Brook looked at the darkness.

"Good."

Death turned toward him.

Brook's expression was hard.

"Maybe I'm tired of everything hiding."

Death said nothing.

Behind him, Hades studied Sera.

"You used the word correctly."

Sera looked at him.

"I didn't."

"You understood what it needed."

"I needed Crowley back."

Hades nodded.

"Exactly."

Sera looked toward the word on the wall.

"It wasn't the command."

"No."

Hades's expression changed.

"It was why you spoke it."

Sera absorbed that.

Then looked toward the thirteenth symbol.

"So Word Magic isn't about saying the right thing."

Hades nodded.

"It is about meaning it."

Sera looked at the ruined floor.

"And if you don't?"

Hades answered:

"Sometimes nothing happens."

A pause.

"Sometimes something else does."

Crowley stood.

Brook looked at him.

"Can you walk?"

Crowley nodded.

Brook didn't believe him.

But Crowley remained standing.

Henry looked at the thirteenth symbol.

"Okay."

Everyone turned toward him.

He pointed at it.

"Cost us a floor."

Brook frowned.

"Henry."

"I'm making a point."

Sera folded her arms.

"Go on."

Henry looked at Crowley.

"Mercer touched that symbol."

Crowley nodded.

"The symbol appeared."

Henry looked at Brook.

"Then Brook arrived in Remus and the road opened."

He pointed at the symbol again.

"Maybe we're asking the wrong question."

Brook looked at him.

"What question should we be asking?"

Henry's face became serious.

"Not what the thirteenth sanctuary is."

The chamber went quiet.

Henry looked toward the darkness.

"But what happened to it?"

No one answered.

Because that question felt worse.

The thirteenth symbol flickered.

Once.

Then disappeared.

Everyone froze.

Where it had been—

a single sentence slowly carved itself into the stone.

Sera read it.

Her voice was quiet.

"THE KEY HAS BEEN FOUND."

Brook's expression hardened.

Crowley stared at the words.

Hades stepped back.

And somewhere beyond Remus—

something opened its eyes.
