Chapter 14 - Rule break

"What do you mean there aren't any rule books?" "I mean exactly what I said. There are no rule books because there are no rules." Winter huffed, exasperated, "Well then how does one know what one potentially gets in trouble for? The powers of deduction?" "As in trying to infer what you possibly could have done to warrant punishment?" "Exactly." Jax folded his arms, "That's what most people attempt to do." "So there must be theories for what the rules are." "Yes, there are some." "So you must have a theory as to why you got thrown in detention." Jax just shook his head slowly, "Wrong." Winter threw her hands up. "I don't have a theory because I did so much that day, it really could have been anything." Winter rolled her eyes, "Yeah yeah. I got it. Your middle name is trouble and all that. Just recount what happened that day so I can copy exactly what you did." Jax leaned against the wall, "Didn't take you much for a copycat." "Just shut up and tell me what happened." "Well how can I shut up and also tell you what happened?" "I know what I said. Now spill." Jax smirked, "All I know is it was freshman prank week. Where we all do stupid things just in general." "I don't see how that's different from your usual." "Moody today, aren't you?" "Nonsense. I am never moody," Winter twisted a strand of her hair. "Seems like you've never experienced issues with your plans before. So I take it you're probably not used to asking others for help." Winter squinted. Either she was really obvious with her thoughts and emotions or her friends had become experts at reading her. "You don't have to say anything Knight. I know I'm right." Jax had on a thoughtful expression. "That day, I pulled a bunch of pranks on my classmates and on the teachers as well. I graffitied the school's outer walls. I got into a fist fight with Sam in the hallway just before gym. I disrupted Coach Russo's class. I got really really mad that day too." "Mad?" "Yeah." Winter searched for the significance that emotion could've had in Jax's punishment. "It seems like I'll just have to do something similar to what you did that day to get the quickest results." Jax puffed up his chest, "Yeah well I don't know how you're going to manage all that." Winter rolled her eyes, "You did." He straightened out his uniform jacket, "Yes but I am Jax 'Trouble' Ryan. I have had years and years of practice." "Whatever. Anything you can do I can do better." "We'll see about that Knight," he said as Winter was already walking away from him. She passed by where Lucas was staring at them and tapped his shoulder, "See you around, King." She linked arms with Mandy and Layla, knowing what she had to do.

As they walked away from Lucas and Jax, Layla leaned in and whispered, "What was that all about?" "I tried squeezing the truth out of Jax about the rules. The truth you guys wouldn't tell me." Layla scratched the back of her head. "Anyway I found out that there aren't any rules." Mandy and Layla shared a look. Winter's eyebrow twitched trying to figure out the meaning behind it. "So I figured that the only way I'm going to get to see the detention dungeon is if I do the same thing that Jax did that day he got in trouble." Mandy gripped Winter's arm, "Are you sure about this Winter?" Winter smiled sweetly, "I'm sure." Mandy sighed. They kept walking together and Layla asked, "What did Jax do anyway?" Winter winked, "Well I heard it was freshman prank week." Mandy gasped delightedly, "I remember that! Jax was a total rebel. We all got to see how cool he was." Winter rolled her eyes, "Jax. Cool? Please never say that to his face. His ego wouldn't stop growing." Winter paused, "Do you guys know where the art room is?" Layla groaned, "Yeah it's just down the hall. To the left. The third door." Winter tugged on her braid, "Don't look so reluctant while helping me." Layla smiled, "I have to or else the distribution of rational thoughts in our group would be sorely lacking." Winter laughed monotonously, "I'm going to find some spray paint."

Winter followed Layla's directions and found the art room by the colorfully designed sign that was written in cursive lettering saying "Art Room." She searched the cabinets and was able to find the spray paint. She smirked. Winter walked out of the art classroom and jangled the cans in her friends direction. "I'm not going to ask you to do it with me. I'm a better friend than that." Mandy gripped Layla's arm, "And we're better friends than ones who let you do this alone." Layla looked at Mandy and then back at Winter, "She's right. You're not in this alone. If you're in then we're in too." Winter smiled. "Then it looks like we're doing this." Winter gestured in front of her, "Shall we?" Mandy squeezed Layla and Winter's hands. Layla nodded, "We shall."

They headed over to the back area of the school and Winter whipped out the cans of spray paint. She handed one to Mandy and started shaking the other one. Layla rubbed her neck, "I'll be on look out until one of you feels like switching off." Winter smirked as she popped the cap off the can. Mandy followed suit. Winter used her knowledge of street art and started defiling the wall. Layla piped up, "Someone's coming!"
