Naruto: The Second Chance of Obito Uchiha
Chapter 14: The Weight of a New Rank
The Hokage Tower was filled with the sound of paperwork.
Unlike the chaos of the battlefield, there were no explosions or enemy attacks here.
But every decision made inside these walls affected the lives of thousands of shinobi.
Hiruzen Sarutobi looked over the latest mission reports.
Among them were the records of Team Minato.
Not academy students.
Not inexperienced genin.
They were chunin now.
Young shinobi who had already faced the reality of war.
At the forward command headquarters, Minato received a message from the Hokage.
He read the scroll carefully before looking toward his team.
"Kakashi. Obito. Rin."
The three turned toward him.
"We're returning to Konoha."
Obito immediately became suspicious.
"Are we in trouble?"
Rin sighed.
"Why is that always your first thought?"
Obito shrugged.
"Because whenever someone important calls us back, something usually happens."
Kakashi looked away.
"You're hopeless."
When they arrived in the village, they were immediately directed to the Hokage Tower.
Inside, Hiruzen waited with Minato.
The Third Hokage looked over the three shinobi standing before him.
"You have all matured greatly since becoming chunin."
His eyes moved toward Kakashi.
"Kakashi Hatake."
Kakashi stepped forward.
"Yes, Lord Third."
"You have displayed exceptional tactical ability, leadership, and combat skill during your missions."
Hiruzen placed a document on the desk.
"Your performance during the war has earned you a promotion."
A pause.
"You are now a Special Jonin of the Hidden Leaf."
Kakashi accepted the promotion.
"Thank you, Lord Third."
Although his expression remained calm, Obito noticed the pride in his teammate's eyes.
Kakashi had worked hard for this.
Then Hiruzen turned toward Obito.
"Obito Uchiha."
Obito stood straight.
"Yes, Lord Third."
"Your earlier reputation did not reflect your true ability."
Obito looked slightly surprised.
Hiruzen continued.
"You have repeatedly placed yourself in danger to protect your comrades."
"You have defeated opponents far more experienced than yourself."
"And most importantly…"
"You have shown the judgment of a shinobi far beyond your years."
Obito became quiet.
Those words meant more than he expected.
Hiruzen looked at the report.
"Your actions on the battlefield have earned you the same promotion."
"Effective immediately, you are a Special Jonin of the Hidden Leaf."
Obito froze.
For years, he had been the Uchiha who was considered late.
The one who was always compared to others.
The one who struggled to be noticed.
Now…
He had earned recognition.
Not because of his clan.
Not because of his Sharingan.
Because of his choices.
"Thank you, Lord Third."
Outside the Hokage Tower, Kakashi looked at Obito.
"So you finally got what you wanted."
Obito smiled.
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"Recognition."
Obito became quiet.
Then he shook his head.
"Maybe before."
He looked toward the village.
"Now I just want to make sure I can protect everyone."
Kakashi studied him.
That answer would have sounded impossible from the old Obito.
But this Obito was different.
Rin approached them with a smile.
"Congratulations to both of you."
She looked at their new ranks.
"You earned them."
Obito smiled.
"You're next."
Rin shook her head.
"I'm focused on becoming a better medical ninja."
Kakashi nodded.
"That's important."
The battlefield needed people who could save lives just as much as those who fought.
Later that day, Minato met with his team at the training grounds.
"You have reached a new stage as shinobi."
He looked at Kakashi and Obito.
"Special Jonin is not just a higher rank."
"It means the village trusts you with greater responsibility."
The two listened carefully.
"You will be expected to lead others."
"To make difficult decisions."
"And to protect those who cannot protect themselves."
The training exercise began.
This time, Minato did not treat them like students.
He treated them like shinobi.
Kakashi analyzed the battlefield.
Obito adapted to changing conditions.
Rin supported them from behind.
Their teamwork had changed.
They no longer fought like three individuals.
They moved like a single unit.
That evening, Obito walked through the village.
The rank on his vest felt different.
Not heavier because of pride.
Heavier because of responsibility.
He stopped near the training grounds.
His Sharingan activated.
Three tomoe rotated slowly.
Once, these eyes had led him toward hatred.
Now they represented something else.
A promise.
The next morning, Minato received a new mission.
The western front had become a priority.
Iwagakure forces were moving near a major supply route.
A strategic location.
A bridge that connected the battlefield.
Minato looked at the mission scroll.
Then he looked at his team.
"Kakashi."
"Obito."
"Rin."
They stood ready.
"This mission will require all of your skills."
Obito looked at the location.
A familiar name.
A place that carried memories from another life.
Kannabi Bridge.
But this time…
He would not arrive there as a helpless boy.
He would arrive as a shinobi prepared to change history.
