Chapter 7 - Allied only in times of crisis

Lana Lang entered Luthorcorp begrudgingly, you see, it wasn't her boyfriend, Lex Lutho,r that had invited her here today. No, it was his father, Lionel Lutho,r and the word invite wasn't exactly the best word to use. Lionel had always been a thorn in the side of the residents of Smallville. Unfortunately, during Dark Thursday, she was forced to make a few decisions to survive. One of those decisions was working with Lionel Luthor.

As she pressed the button to the top floor she couldn't help but wonder what this was about. She had her guesses, but with Lionel Luthor, she could never be sure. There was no elevator music to annoy or calm her, there was only the beep as it reached the next floor and her thoughts. Her fist tightened as she watched the elevator climb higher in higher. At least she didn't have to worry about Lex being here; Lionel was smarter than that, or was that his plan?

He certainly didn't think the two should be together, he had been adamant about that. He believed Lex was simply a rebound but he was more than that. After her break up with Clark Lex was simply a friend who listened. He had been on the receiving end of the constant walls Clark seemed to put up around his friends.

He may have been the only other person in the world who understood what it meant to be pushed away by Clark. Hearing the elevator chime she stepped out looking to the right first, the hall leading to Lex's office was as quiet as a mouse. Heading towards the left she walked past Lionel's assistant's desk and headed directly into his office.

"Ah, Miss Lang please take a seat," Lionel said as looking up from the folder in his hand.

Lana sighed in annoyance before taking a seat on the couch. Lionel's office was oddly colored. Dark blue lines covered the glass, adding a streaking effect. His walls were the same color, but the couch and chairs were black. She could only guess that blue-colored glass was hiding Lionel's secrets behind them, whether that be a safe or something more diabolical. His desk, on the other hand, was silver, and a purple LuthorCorp computer sat atop it. Lionel himself wore a black trenchcoat over his white shirt and purple tie. It was his kind of fashion, ever since she could remember he had always worn something similar.

"Miss Lang, surely you can guess why I've called you here," Lionel said with a smile that didn't reach his eyes.

Lana had her guessed but with Lionel how could she be sure, "To talk about my relationship with Lex. If so-"

"No, that would be wildly inappropriate considering the last time we spoke we were deciding which one of us would be the one to kill Lex." Lionel stood from his chair, walking around his desk, just to take a seat on it. He interlocked his fingers as he looked down at Lana a smirk on his face.

"He wasn't himself," Lana said knowing that was the truth. That wasn't Lex, he didn't even call himself Lex. Not to mention the way he walked, and talked, everything was different, even the way he looked at her was different. She seemed to be nothing more than an object in his eyes, one he would use to repopulate his own race. An Alien.

"But you were completely yourself," Lionel dropped the smirk as he looked at Lana. "And unless I'm mistaken, the discussion was due to the fact that Lex was obsessed with a piece of alien technology infinitely too dangerous for any of us to comprehend. Does this sound familiar to you at all?" Lionel asked as he stood from his desk walking over towards Lana with his hands behind his back.

It was obvious now, Lana could see it; Lionel wanted to know about the device. How he had learned of it she wasn't sure but now he was hoping to use her for more information. She wouldn't be used so easily. "Mr.Luthor, all of this is behind us now."

"Ah, well, it's obvious any trust you have for me only works in times of crisis. But we're both aware that the crisis is far from over. Lex salvaged that piece of alien technology."

"If you know that much then why did you call me here?" Lana asked with a frown on her face.

"Because you're gonna help me take that piece of technology from the hands of my son. You're gonna help me save Lex from himself."

"And why would I do that?" Lana asked.

"Because if you don't, I'm gonna tell Lex of your little plan to kill him. I wonder how he'll feel knowing another person he loves has tried to end his life."
