Chapter 2 - Did I die? 2

Everyone has a theory about what happens after death. Heaven. Hell. Purgatory. Reincarnation. Nothing at all—the last one sounds empty until you sit with it long enough and it starts to feel poetic. My buddy had a worse one. He said when you die you lose your memories and live the same life over, repeating the same mistakes until something inside you finally gets it and you escape the prison called life. A fucked-up cosmic game with no save file anyone can see.

I used to laugh at him.

Then I died in an alley with a hole in my chest and a vampire's mouth on my throat, and the last thought I had was that I had been here before.

[You have died.]

The darkness was not empty.

[Welcome, Helio King.]

[You have been selected as a Vessel.]

A hundred exploding stars went off behind my eyes. Loud. Chaotic. I understood almost none of it and all of it at the same time. Enlightenment, if that's even the right word. The term is too broad. It covers too many roads. How would you even know you'd reached it? A congratulations message? Or would you just know?

I knew.

I had been here before.

Then the ceremony lights were in my face again and Principal Smith was calling my name.

"Helio King!"

Cold sweat. I checked my chest for an injury that wasn't there. Fog where a thought should have been. Déjà vu so thick it made my teeth ache.

I walked the stage. Took the diploma. Sat down. Zoned out. Hugs. Goodbyes. Dark street. Familiar turns. Second alley.

I stopped mid-thought because I knew I had already thought this.

My body hid behind a wall before I told it to. A voice I already hated drifted out of the dark.

"I need to do laundry today anyway."

My legs ran. Instinct. Memory my mind didn't have yet.

Half a second later the pale man was in front of me. 5'11. Darker-than-black hair. Skin like something that had never seen the sun.

"Did you see anything?"

I shook my head. Too scared to speak.

"Liar."

Black.

"Helio King!"

Déjà vu. Head pounding. After the ceremony I stayed away from everyone. I knew I had died. I was going to die today. I just needed the when, the where, and the how.

Every time I reached for the memory it slipped: leaving school, spacing out, name called again. I didn't know how many times I had done this. Phantom pain lived in my neck and the center of my chest.

I listed what I had.

I died.

I don't remember the exact method when the loop resets.

I've done this more than twice. Headaches, déjà vu, and the ghost of injuries prove it.

Time manipulation with fractured memory on return. Or bootleg Return by Death. Either way, something was keeping the save point at graduation.

An angry janitor yelled at me to get out. School was closing. I had stayed later than my previous selves. That was new.

Dark again. Same path. Second alley.

This time I didn't walk into it.

I saw the aftermath first: bloodbath, organs, the kind of mess a bomb makes at point-blank range. I swallowed the scream. Would I be on that wall if I had left on time?

I took the long way home.

The memories hit like a sledgehammer on the run.

Head ripped off.

Curb-stomp.

Lungs pulled out through the hole in my chest.

Beheading.

The original: hand through the sternum, blood vacuumed backward, wicked smile, "what extravagant blood you have," shadows dancing at the edge of dying vision while he let me bleed out for an audience.

I ran until my house appeared. Dad was on the road—trucker, ten hours out, the reason he missed the ceremony. I locked the door, changed, sat on my bed with a notebook, and started writing every death I could still feel.

The count was demoralizing. Rage sat in my throat like a second pulse. It felt like tracking losses in a game designed to make you quit.

This was not my first time around that corner.

Not my second.

A window I had only glimpsed in the dark between deaths finally stayed.

I stared at the last line I had written in the notebook.

I remembered everything. This wasn't my first or second time around that corner.

The System pulsed once, almost polite.

[Enlightenment threshold reached.]

[Partial memory lock lifted.]

[Death was around the corner.]

[Death is still around the corner.]

[The hunt does not pause for loops.]

I closed the notebook. Tomorrow I would not take the usual path. Tomorrow I would go looking for the thing that kept killing me.

The Shadows in the corners of my room shifted, like they were leaning in to watch what I did with the knowledge.

I whispered it so only the System and I could hear.

"I'm not done."

[Acknowledged.]
