Chapter 4 - 1% of Laundry!? 4

One more thing.

I swept the hallway. Dust, a receipt from a gas station Dad had left months ago, the ordinary dirt of a house that only two people lived in and one of them was never home.

[Key Complete.]

[Dungeon available.]

The air in my room changed. Not colder. Denser. Like the Shadows had leaned all the way in.

A door that was not a door drew itself over the closet. Black frame. No handle. Just a thin red line down the middle, the same color as the blood that had been on my shirt an hour and forty-seven lives ago.

[Enter Alley That Remembers?]

[Recommended Level: 3 | Current Level: 2]

[Note: Death inside does not reset the loop. Pain is real. Time inside ≠ time outside.]

[Echo strength: 1% of recorded entity "Laundry."]

One percent.

I almost laughed. The real one had turned a group of men into laundry without getting a drop on himself and then treated my death like a chore before a party. One percent of that still sounded like enough to kill the version of me that had just leveled off making the bed.

I touched the red line.

The house folded.

Brick. Wet asphalt. The second alley, copied down to the crack in the dumpster and the dead fluorescent buzz from the street behind me. No sky. The walls went up forever. The Shadows were thicker here, packed into the corners like they had bought tickets.

[Dungeon: Alley That Remembers]

[Objective: Reach the far end.]

[First wave incoming.]

They came out of the stains.

Not men. Not quite. Shapes that remembered being the sketchy group—arms too long, jaws unhinged, chests already opened like someone had started the joke and forgotten to finish it. They moved like they were still arguing, still mid-sentence, still about to throw a punch that would never land on the real Laundry.

[Mob: Residual Thug (Echo)] ×5

[Level 1–2]

I had no weapon. I had a diploma in a jacket I wasn't wearing and a body that still thought push-ups were optional.

The first one lunged.

I sidestepped because my legs remembered dying here more than they remembered gym class. Its claws tore brick where my neck had been in loop twelve. I grabbed a rusted pipe off the ground—[Improvised Weapon: Rusted Pipe | Durability 8]—and swung like I was still the kid who played sports and never took them seriously.

The pipe connected. The thing's head caved in with a sound like wet cardboard. It burst into black grit that the alley swallowed.

The other four didn't care. They piled.

I took a rake across the ribs. Felt the exact place Laundry had put his hand through me. The Trait flared—blood that refused—and the cut closed slower than I wanted, faster than it should have.

Vitality check: holding.

I stopped swinging wild. Forty-seven deaths had taught me one useful thing: panic gets you a creative ending. I let them come one at a time against the narrowest part of the alley, pipe on the ones that still had faces, feet on the ones that didn't.

I put it in Agility. I needed to not be standing where the next thing wanted me to stand.

The alley went quiet for three seconds.

Then the far end lit up with that same cheap light that had made him look like a model.

He was the right height. The right hair. The right pale. But the smile was thinner. The presence was a rumor of the thing that had told me I wasn't even a bug.

[Boss: Echo of Laundry — 1%]

[Level 5]

[Title: The One Who Does Not Get Dirty]

He tilted his head, exactly like the real one.

"I need to do laundry today anyway."

The words were the same. The weight behind them was not. One percent. I could feel the difference in my teeth. This version was still going to try to take me apart. It just wouldn't do it while thinking about a party.

I raised the pipe.

The Echo moved.

Not teleport. Just arrive—one step that ate the distance. A hand aimed at my chest, same hole, same lesson.

I was already dropping because loop thirty-one had been that exact angle. The hand punched brick. Dust. The Echo looked at its clean palm like the alley had insulted it.

[Dying Gaze] showed me the rest: the Shadows along the walls were not decoration. They were keeping score.

I didn't wait for the second line. I stepped in and put the pipe across the place a human jaw would be.

It connected. The Echo's head snapped sideways. No blood. Of course no blood. He doesn't get dirty.

He looked at me the way the real one had looked at the group before they became pieces.

"Liar," the Echo said, even though I hadn't spoken.

Then it stopped playing at conversation.

The fight was ugly and short and longer than any of my real deaths. One percent of an Ancient is still an Ancient's homework. Claws that weren't claws opened my shoulder. A grip I couldn't break lifted me and tried to fold me around the dumpster. I bit, because in one loop I had promised I would scratch his eyes out, and this close I could reach.

[+21 EXP]

[Critical: Echo staggered.]

The pipe finally broke. Durability 0. I was on my knees with my own blood in my mouth and the Echo's hand cocked for the chest again.

I had one thing the first forty-seven versions of me never had in this alley.

I knew it was only one percent.

I drove my forehead into its nose and dumped every point of Will I had into staying awake.

The Echo flickered—less person, more stain—and the System finally decided I had paid enough.

[Boss defeated.]

[Echo of Laundry — 1% dispersed.]

[Dungeon Clear: Alley That Remembers]

[Reward: Skill Book — "Spotless Intent (Incomplete)"]

[Reward: Class Seed generated. Selection available upon exit.]

The alley peeled off me like wet paper.

I was on my bedroom floor. Pipe gone. Shoulder whole. Clock on the nightstand said only eleven minutes had passed.

Outside, the real night was still dark. The real Laundry was still somewhere in the city with a party to attend and no idea that a slacker with a diploma had just beaten a cheap copy of him with a rusted pipe and a grudge.

A new window waited.

[Class Selection available.]

[You have seen 1% of the thing that kills you.]

[The other 99% does not know you yet.]

I opened the notebook and wrote it under the plan.

Echo is 1%. Mobs first. He still doesn't get dirty.

Next key. Next dungeon.

Do not get cocky. The real one is still laundry.

The Shadows in the corner of the room shifted, almost like they were disappointed the show had been so short.

I wasn't.

For the first time, I had walked out of that alley on my feet.
