Chapter 50 - Enchanter License Exam (3)

As Masters Eleanora and Joanna began examining the written designs with sparkles in their eyes that grew the more they saw, Grandmaster Runette's dextrous fingers tilted and turned Luca's dagger as she took stock of its quality. "Considering this is only your third creation with magecraft, this dagger's craftsmanship is like a work of art. If not for my experienced eyes, I wouldn't be able to find a single flaw." She unsheathed the blade, marvelling in its ingenious design, "If this went on auction, based on just its size and the armour-piercing rune on the blade's tip, I'd wager that even some B-grade Rogues would desire it. This weapon is as close to perfect as a weapon can be for the Assassin specialists. A wind-resistance rune to reduce the sound it makes when swung, an armour-piercing rune placed on the most effective location for the weapon, and even the Space-type space-cutting rune that easily makes cutting through magic barriers a breeze."

As Grandmaster Runette was examining Luca's creation whilst listing off her observations, Master Joanna quietly exclaimed, "If not for the fact that it happened in front of my own eyes, I would never have been able to believe a boy just a tad over the age of ten could craft this. The flawless accuracy of each rune is practically unheard of. Just the eight runes on these designs outclass ours by... threefold, maybe fourfold. Not only that, he even created this telekinetic rune, which is can be classified as both a single and a paired rune by itself! Synergetic runes are very difficult to make, as no mistakes are allowed at all, else the runes will be incapable of proper function. If we use this right, we can make many new things. I'm sure even the dwarves would go ham over this, as they've been working tirelessly to make a new magic engine."

The most senior of the three ladies in standing stared at Luca keenly, "I shouldn't be surprised by you at this point, should I? Every time you do something, it's groundbreaking. This dagger... I can't possibly grade this as anything less than B-grade. If not for materials, Luca, this creation of yours would be a solid A-grade. I'm certain that your runes are the cause for its capabilities, so that part on its own can prove you to be an A-grade Enchanter. However, that's only due to the lack of capabilities of our own runes. Should a time emerge when your runes are commonplace, I'd suggest this be your first C-grade work."

Luca nodded, "With all of the runes I have stuck in my head," rapping his skull with his knuckles for emphasis, "if I graded my work based off of them, this would actually be a D-grade." He was being honest. Thanks to the System and his own intellectual prowess, very few of the runes Luca had come across had remained unaltered. "The problem is that there are so many of them that I can't etch each and every one of them onto paper."

A borderline death glare came from all three women, making Luca, and Arcturus in his nap, flinch instinctively, and Master Eleanora inquisitively hissed, "You have all of that knowledge in your head? How did you get it all?"

Silently enduring his cold sweat, the Dragonborn lad said, "After I went through the archives for four hours. I remembered all of it within about two hours. The remaining two was spent on analysing and altering what I'd learned." He then awkwardly shifted in place as he mumbled, "Other than that, I've made several more original runes..."

Grandmaster Runette sighed deeply, massaging her temples after having sheathed and place the dagger on her lap. "Unparalleled genius, there's no other description possible..." She then whipped out a crystal ball no bigger than her palm from her pocket and infused magic into it. After a moment or two, a phantom image formed above it, taking the shape of the top half of Head Guildmaster Elizabeth Tudor, who was seated at her desk doing paperwork. "We have a serious dilemma, Liz." As she and the former Archmage were once classmates at the Magic Academy, the foremost institution for Mages, Runette had no problems calling her by the shorted nickname of her youth. "This blasted genius created a borderline A-grade item based on our current standards."

Though she had expected such, Elizabeth certainly did not plan for them to be so drastic, "He what? That's absurd... but, knowing you, that can't be all, can it?"

With a grim smirk on the Grandmaster Enchanter's face, Runette sighed, "Of course not. Instead, this boy has claimed to have memorized the entire archive's runes and then altered them within the course of four hours. These altered runes of his, even just the few he used for his creation just now, are vastly superior to ours."

The former Archmage of Fire slammed her hand on the desk, leaving a good 1cm handprint in the wood, as she abruptly shot up, "What!?"

"Sit down, salamander, you'll burst into flames again." Naturally, Runette also took the opportunity to use the unlucky nickname of her old schoolmate to cool her off.

"Don't even get me started with that again, Rune," said the Head Guildmaster, who did return to her chair with a deep sigh akin to Runette's earlier. "Let's get straight to point, tell me what you want."

At this point, Luca, who had remained quiet since his last questioning, spoke up, "I'd like to create a compendium of my altered runes for the Mages Guild. If I had the help of several Master or Grandmaster Enchanters, some materials that can store memory, and some time to separate my knowledge into volumes to better categorize them, I'm certain that I can do it. It'd be easiest to start from the hardest runes and gradually move from A-grade to F-grade due to the runes' quantities."

Once again, as per Luca's observation had become normal around him, silence reigned over the room. Then, breaking the silence, a loud thud came from the phantom image of Elizabeth, as she had just slammed her head into the table like she'd given up on life. Without moving an inch, the Head Guildmaster muttered into the wooden table, "First it was old Edgewick charging in here to declare your altered formula for Mana Improvement potions, now this... While I'm thinking about this," she looked up with a death glare at Luca, "since you have altered runes, am I right in guessing you have altered recipes?" Luca's attempt to look another direction caused Elizabeth to grumble more, "God of Light above, I'm exhausted and it's not even evening yet... We'll talk about this later. For now, Runette, you can grade him as you see fit, then you have free reign to look for any memory-related materials in the guild storage." She then gave Luca withering stare, "I swear on everything I hold dear, boy, if you cause Athers to lose his shit as well, I will cane you on the spot."
