Zinnia continued to look down. Why would she look up? All of her family exists down below, their ashes mingling with the body of the Earth. All of her friends are mere ghosts now, they hover around her but she'll never see them because she won't look up. They plead and beg, but she never hears them.
All she can hear are the words of a troubled young light spirit. No matter how much pain swims within the depths of her her soul, she refuses to remove herself from the water. She'd rather drown than dry up, but she fails to realize that light does so much more than dry an individual up. It allows one to see the atrocities coming before they even arrive, it allows one to fight against those same atrocities alongside another. It allows two to overcome and persevere.
Perhaps she does realize this but believes that this little light spirit intends to dry her up and leave her. Perhaps too many have already tried doing such a thing with her. Regardless, she can't find it in herself to trust his words.
