As Days were passing by Drake and Joy were getting closer, to help recover Drake faster, Joy would bring home-cooked for him, she would help him to go on walks, she would often go and check on him.
Drake was happy to see Joy around him all the time, but he could not understand why suddenly Joy had become so caring for him, but he does not want to have high hopes, and he thought, Maybe she is being good to him because he saved her once.
besides this love confusion, there was something else that was going on in Joy's life and the hospital. Joy was trying hard to make Lisa believe in her but Lisa was not ready to listen to Joy, she was getting more and more aggressive day by day.
It's Lisa 's birthday today, Joy wanted to do something for her, she told Jake that she won't be on her night shift today. Joy worked hard to manage more than half of the amount Lisa needed for the admission and she was happy, that be the time of admission she would arrange the other half.
Joy brought a gift for Lisa, She made her favourite food and wished her Happy Birthday, Joy did not tell her that she had arranged the half amount, she wanted to tell such awesome news on her birthday, so Lisa could be happier.
"Lisa, we would have a party at night, just the two of us, and I have a gift for you that you would love, but you gotta wait for it till night," said Joy smiling to cheer up Lisa.
Then Joy left for work, she went to her Part-Time work and before going to the hospital she went home to get food for Drake, and then she left to the hospital.
Joy went to her locker and changed into her uniform and left to her work. As Joy was passing by, Joy heard a scream, a man was screaming for help, holding an 8-year-old boy in his arm.
" Help! somebody help please, Please look at my son, he is not awakening, please just look at him" said the man anxiously.
Joy was startled at his scream and ran to check what happened, she saw the man was standing right next to his child, and Doctor was examining him, the man looked so worried and anxious, he keeps calling his son's name.
Joy looked at that man and his son, she was surprised by the love that man had for his son, that reminds her of her father who never considered her feelings and never loved her.
Joy went near them to try to hear, what Doctor has to say about that boy.
they examined the boy and saw his fingernails were little blue and his heart rate was not normal too.
"Mr Kim, please, Relax, we first need to run some test on him, only then, we would be able to tell you, what is wrong with your son's health," said Doctor and asked Martha to take the boy for Chest x-ray and ECG.
Joy then left to her work, she went to all the floors and cleaned them and changed bedsheets, but she was still thinking about that man and his son.
After Finishing her Work, Joy went to Drake's Office for lunch. she set the table and asked Drake to come to have the food.
As Drake starts eating, he noticed that Joy was looking lost in some deep thoughts, she was not eating.
" Hey! what happened, You look lost somewhere, Is something bothering you?" Asked Drake.
" Huh? nothing, Its nothing, it's just a patient, a boy that came this morning, he was unconscious, and his father looks so worried about him, he was crying and begging to the doctor to tell him, what is wrong with his son? " said Joy with sadness in her eyes.
" His son was unconscious, Every father would get worried Joy, that 's the nature of parents Joy, every parent care about their child the most," said Drake.
When, Drake said that Joy looked at him and said, " oh!! they all do? I never knew that a father really could be so worried about his child".
Drake knew that seeing them, must remind Joy of her father, who left them years ago, he tried to comfort her but joy just stood up and said, " Hey! I think I need to go now, you finish your food and don't forget to take your medicines".
Joy reached the Door and turned the Door Knob, then she turned abruptly and said, Oh! Yeah, and I forgot to tell you that I won't be on night shift today, so, we won't be having any coffee and chat this night".
What? why? did something happen at home? asked Drake." No, its Lisa's Birthday, and I decided to spend this night with her, said Joy and then left to her work.
As the day passed, Joy day shift, was over, Joy went to her Locker room and changed into her clothes, she did not go to the rooftop as she had to home.
Joy came out and was on the Corridor, she saw Mr.Kim who came this morning with his son, he was talking to the Doctor.
"Mr.Kim, Your son's report has come, he has a hole in his heart between major blood vessels, and it's quite big which results in less oxygen being carried to your child's body, and that's why your child's skin or fingernails appear blue, He urgently needed surgery, if not then, it may lead to congestive heart failure," said Doctor.
" what? a hole in his heart, but he was fine yesterday, he was laughing and playing games with me, how he could have such a horrible disease, he is just a child Doctor, he is the only one I have, Doctor,
Please save him" said Man tears in his eyes.
" Don't worry, Mr Kim, once he gets the surgery, just remember he needs to get the surgery as soon as possible and then he would be fine, you can go to the reception and they would tell you about the billing procedure.
"Billing Procedure? I am just a worker Doctor, How would I pay for his Surgery," asked Man.
" I can't tell you anything regarding this, You can go and ask at the reception, they would tell you, but just don't forget that your son needed this surgery or his life would be in danger said the Doctor and left.
Mr.Kim broke down in tears on the ground, he does not know what to do, he was just a worker, how he was gonna pay for his son's surgery?
Joy saw Mr.Kim in tears, She went to him and said, " Are you okay, Sir"?
he stood up wiped his tears and just left without saying a word to Joy. Joy didn't know how she could to help him, then she left the hospital to home.
Joy reached home and took out the envelope from her bag that has all the money Joy saved for Lisa's birthday, she kept it on the table and went to Lisa's room to surprise her with cake.
When Joy went in, she saw, Lisa was not there, she looked for her in the house, but Lisa was nowhere to be found, Joy went to her room again and saw a note on her table, it says,
" Sister, I could not tell you before, but I already made plans for my birthday, I am going to celebrate it with my friends, so don't bother to call me, I would be home in the morning, also, I took some money from your Drawer."
Joy could not believe, Lisa could do something like that, She sat on the Chair. Joy was sad, she was hurt, Lisa never talked to her in this tone before, She knew I would come home to celebrate her birthday, but she left without even telling me, she was never like this, what is wrong with her, Why she is doing all of this, wondered Joy.
Joy sat there for a while in Dismay then she took her bag and put the money envelop in her bag and thought that she would give this to Lisa in the morning, she would be happy, maybe then, she would be, like my princess used to be.
Joy didn't want to be alone so, she took her bag and took the cab for the hospital for her night shift thinking, working there would be more good than sitting at home and being sad, Joy reached there and changed into her uniform.
Joy, could not understand, that what she needs to do, that would make Lisa happy, and be the girl she always was, Joy feels like this college thing was taking Lisa away from her, she feels sad deep down inside because of Lisa's behaviour.
So, to get some fresh air, and lighten her heart, Joy took the elevator to the rooftop.
As joy reached there, she heard a noise, it was coming from the back of the rooftop, joy walked ahead to look what was there.
As Joy reached the back of the rooftop, she was shocked, A man was standing on the edge of the roof and was about to jump down from there.
Joy was startled, She shouted out loud, " Stop, Stop right there" Please, As joy Shouted the Man turned to look, It was Mr.Kim but what was he doing there?
" Joy looked at him in surprise and asked, " Mr Kim what are you doing here, Why are you standing on the edge of the roof, It's not safe to be there Mr.Kim, Please come down, Mr.Kim, Please".
Mr.Kim Did not want to listen to Joy, He turned again to jump off the Roof, But Joy, couldn't let him die in front of her eyes, she again shouted with anger in her eyes, " just stop there, Mr.Kim, Why the hell are you doing this?"
Mr.Kim Could not control his emotions and yelled in pain, " Because I can't see my child dying in front of my eyes, I can't, I can't, so Just Please let me die, Please".
" But Why your child would have to die, he would be fine, once he gets the surgery, Doctor told you that, then why are you taking your life", asked Joy with fear in her eyes.
" I don't have the money, I can't arrange the money for his surgery and they won't operate on him if I didn't pay the advance," said Mr.Kim,"
" you can talk to the Finance department, there must be some Social welfare Plan or some other ways to help people who can't afford to pay for surgery here, we can talk to them, Maybe there's away. just come down please, said joy holding her tears.
" No, No they won't, they don't keep such schemes, and if I don't pay by next day, they won't operate on him, But what am I supposed to do, I asked everyone, to lend me some money, to help me out in this, but no one, no one is ready to help me, What am I supposed to do? huh? Do you tell me? how can I see my child dying in front of my eyes, but If I die, he would be orphan and some orphanage social services may save him, and he could live his life happily" said Mr Kim as tears flow down his eyes and he turned to Jump.
" No, you are wrong, you are wrong Mr.Kim, how could you know that, if he survived, he would be happy, how can you be so sure, do you have any idea how would he feel, when he would know that his father died so that he could get this treatment, would he be happy when he would know, that because of him his father had to take his own life.
You don't know Mr.Kim, He would die every day, thinking that he was responsible for your death, he would have to live his whole life with that pain and sorrow, he would suffer every single day, thinking that If my father was here, I would not have to go through this, but you don't understand Mr.Kim how that feels,
But, I know how it feels, I know Mr.Kim, How that feels to live with that burden, that pain every day, I was just a 16 year old, Mr Kim, when my father abandoned me, he just left, he did not say anything to me, for the last 4 years I always felt like if I could have chance to talk to him back then, maybe I could have told him to stay for his daughters, but I could not do it, and I am living with that pain for years now, It hurts Mr.Kim, it badly hurts, do you want your son, to feel that pain, blame himself for the rest of his life for his father's death, do you wanna see him, die every day, thinking, that if he was there, he could have stopped you?
tell me, Mr.Kim, tell me," said Joy, as she broke out in tears.
Kim backed off, from the edge of the roof as he heard Joy, he broke down in tears, He understood what Joy was saying, but he was so helpless, He stood up and said, " then what am I supposed to do? Huh? I can't let him die, He is my son, I love him, and if something happened to him, I would die too"
Joy could not understand what she could do to help him out, but she even can't let him and his son die, because she knew how much they both mean to each other.
Joy wiped her tears, she looked at him and said, Okay, Just stay here, don't do anything foolish, I would help you, I promise, Just stay here, till I come back, Please".
And then Joy left, she hurriedly ran to the locker room and took out the envelope which had the money she saved for Lisa's College.
Joy looked at the Envelop, she knew that Lisa needed it, but this family needs it more right now and thinking this, joy ran as fast as she can to the rooftop.
She reached there, went near Mr.Kim and said, " Here, Mr.Kim, take this, and give it to the receptionist and ask her to start your son's surgery, take it and just go".
just in a blink of Eye Joy gave her saving that she earned by working day and night, without thinking about herself to a stranger.
Kim took that envelope and opened it, there was enough money to save his son's life, He looked at Joy with tears in his eyes and said, " But, how can I take this? this is your money, you too must need it, why would you give this to me? "
" Joy paused for a moment and said, " yes, I needed that money for my sister, but right now, you are the one who needs it the most, my Lisa can wait, but your son Surgery can't, so just go to your son, promise me, that no matter how hard time get on you, don't ever think of taking your life".
Kim thanked Joy and promised her that he would never do that again and that he would pay her back, he then ran to his son, to deposit the money get his son into the surgery room.
Joy was Overwhelmed, tears were not stopping, she was shivering in fear just by the thought of, what if she had not come on time, Kim would have jumped off the roof. She was crying like a child, She did not know, if she did the right thing or not, what she would say to Lisa now, too many emotions, too many weird thoughts were making Joy miserable. she was feeling vulnerable.she was scared.
she just wanted someone to hug her and tell her that, it's okay, that you did not do anything wrong, and just hold her and that moment, the only person she could think of was Drake.
Joy couldn't think of anything else, she just ran to the elevator went to his office, she did not knock on his door, she just opened it and saw Drake was sitting on his chair.
As Drake saw Joy, he was stunned, he stood up and said," Joy? what are you doing here? weren't you supposed to be at home? What happened Joy?" He saw tears in her eyes, he was worried,
As he came a little forward, Joy just ran to his arm that he was pushed to the wall, she hugged him
and said," I was so scared Drake, I thought I won't be able to save him, I was so scared Drake, I was so scared,"
Drake could n't understand, what has happened, but as he saw joy Crying so hard, " he Hugged her back and said, " Hey! Hey, Shhh! It's Okay, It's Okay, You don't need to be scared, I am here for you, Okay, Just relax and tell me, what happened ?"
Joy hugged him more tightly as she was scared, she had never experienced something like that in her life ever, and top of that she did something which was going to make Lisa hate her.
Joy's powerful hug pushed Drake to the side of the wall, he tries to comfort her.
" I messed up Drake, I messed up everything, Lisa won't ever forgive me? Drake" said joy sobbingly"
Drake holds her with both of his hand and said, " Hey! just look at me, and tell me what happened, Okay, then we will decide if you messed up or not."
He made her sit on his chair, gave her some water and asked her to tell everything.
Joy told him everything that happened at the roof and what she did.
after hearing Joy, Drake sat quietly and did not say anything. Joy looked at him and said, " I did not do the right thing, Right?please be honest with me Drake tell me?
Drake Hold her hand looked her in the eyes and said, " No, Joy, you did not do anything wrong, You did the right thing, Joy, You saved two lives, don't beat yourself up, and for Lisa, She would understand why you did this, now please wipe your tears".
Drake comforted joy, he told her that she did the right thing, she did what was important then, but would Lisa understand that it was important?
what Joy did was the right thing, but would that right thing make everything go wrong with Lisa and Joy's relationship and would make Joy regret her decision?
