In a floating kingdom of aerial islands inspired by a cruel otome game, where a matriarchal society treats men, especially those from poor, unremarkable noble lineages, as mere disposable “mobs,” accessories for marriage or servants with no future, Shade Fou Bartfort, an 18-year-old young man, struggles to survive as the fifth son of a decaying inland barony. To gain essential Vital Points, which prolong his life and allow him to survive the Spell’s increasingly lethal trials, Shade must perform sexual acts, with greater rewards for virgins and insatiable permanent tasks. His point consumption is absurdly high (one per minute), forcing him into a constant race against death. Worse still, deadly poisons punish him for infidelity or loss of control, and the [Beast Awakening] temporarily turns him into a creature driven by extreme sexual desire, putting everything around him at risk.
With his meta knowledge of the otome game’s “original world” as his only initial advantage, and a Flaw that keeps him in the shadows (easily ignored by protagonists and fate alike), Shade decides to subvert the dual system that oppresses him: the dark Nightmare Spell and the oppressive matriarchal society. In academies filled with seductive and dangerous nobles, aerial duels, summoned monsters, and romantic intrigues manipulated by powerful women, he will use cynical intelligence, addictive sexual powers, and ruthless tactics to ascend, transforming from a forgotten virgin mob into an unpredictable beast that devours the world that rejected him.
