I am a Videogame Character
Ervin slumped at his desk, the glow of his monitor the only light in the room. "My life is utterly pathetic," he muttered to his computer, his character idling in his favorite MMO. "Not like you. You're living in a paradise, aren't you? No job, no rent, no people to disappoint." A bitter laugh escaped him, and without realizing it, his eyes began to well up.
He had hit rock bottom. Fired from his job just when he needed money the most, evicted by his parents, and now facing an empty stomach. All he had left was his aging computer and the decade-old digital character that felt more real than his own life. "Damn it..." He pushed away from the keyboard and collapsed onto the desk, his face buried in his arms. "I just wanted one chance... one real, honest-to-god opportunity. If I had that... I-I know I could be exceptional."
But Ervin didn't notice his computer screen beginning to glow with an unearthly light. Nor did he immediately register the soft, melodic voice that seemed to emanate from it.
"Please don't cry, Ervin... You have given me so much. I believe it is finally my turn to repay you."
The next morning, Ervin jolted awake in his bed, covered in a cold sweat. Something was immediately and profoundly wrong. He could see his own hands in front of his face, but he also saw... himself. A second field of vision hovered above him, a detached, third-person perspective like he was a character in a video game.
