Gao Yang recounted what Polovich had done, how he determined that it was Grand Ivan's affair. All he needed to do was state his experiences, without exaggeration or personal emotion.
After listening quietly to Gao Yang's account, Grand Ivan stood up again. After pacing back and forth in the room a few times, he said softly, "From what you say, I don't really get any definite answers. I still can't determine if Polovich has defected to America and sold me out."
What could Gao Yang say? Naturally, he couldn't say anything, so he remained silent.
Grand Ivan sighed deeply, then said loudly, "Polovich has worked for me for many years. He should be among the most loyal ones, but at my most dangerous time, he chose to stand by. Do you know what that means?"
Gao Yang whispered, "What?"
Grand Ivan said sternly, "It means he's willing to see me dead. He may not betray me, nor might he join others against me, but he's willing to see me dead. With just that, I can no longer trust him."
