Chapter 2 - The Sky Breaks

Chapter 2 – The Sky Breaks

The air itself screamed.

That was the only way Ren could describe it as the barrier dome above Aetherion Academy fractured like glass under invisible pressure.

A second explosion followed—deeper, heavier.

Not an attack.

A breach.

The blood-red sky outside wasn't natural anymore. It pulsed like something alive had pressed its face against reality.

And then the claw emerged again.

Long. Black. Impossible in scale.

It dragged itself through the shattered barrier, carving open space as if the world was fabric.

Students below froze.

Then chaos began.

"EVACUATE!"

"DEFENSIVE TEACHERS TO EAST WING!"

"GET THE FIRST YEARS INSIDE THE CORE HALL!"

Magic erupted across the academy grounds—spells firing in panic instead of control. Shields formed and immediately cracked under pressure waves from above.

Ren stood motionless on the rooftop.

His bread roll slipped from his hand.

Elena grabbed his wrist.

"Ren—move!"

But he didn't.

He was staring at the sky.

Not in fear.

In calculation.

Something about that creature… didn't feel random.

It wasn't attacking blindly.

It was searching.

A third explosion hit the barrier dome.

This time, it shattered completely.

The academy wards collapsed like dying lights.

And the creature entered fully.

It wasn't just a claw.

It was attached to something far larger—an unseen body hidden in the crimson storm. Only fragments were visible: shifting armor-like scales, drifting chains of black energy, and something like a crown of broken horns.

A High Abyss Entity.

That was the only classification instructors screamed in horror.

Elena pulled Ren backward.

"We have to go!"

But as they turned, the rooftop door behind them slammed open.

Three upper-year students rushed in—breathing hard, faces pale.

Darius Vale was among them.

For once, he wasn't smiling.

"What the hell is that thing…" one of them whispered.

Another shook violently. "That's not a mana beast… that's—"

The creature moved.

And the academy grounds below were erased in a single sweeping motion.

Not destroyed.

Wiped.

Like reality itself had been rubbed away.

Silence followed.

A silence heavier than noise.

Then—

Screams returned tenfold.

Ren finally spoke.

"…It's not here for destruction."

Elena snapped at him. "What are you talking about?! People are dying!"

He didn't look at her.

His eyes stayed on the creature.

"It ignored the outer cities," Ren said quietly. "It broke a divine-grade barrier without hesitation… but it isn't spreading outward."

A pause.

"It's converging."

Darius stepped forward angrily. "Converging on what?"

Ren's gaze shifted slightly.

Toward the center of the academy.

The Core Tower.

A low pulse echoed from it.

Once.

Twice.

Like a heartbeat responding to the sky.

And the Abyss Entity reacted immediately.

Its entire mass shifted direction.

The air warped as it descended toward the academy grounds.

Fast.

Elena's grip tightened. "Ren, we need to run!"

But Ren's expression changed.

For the first time—

Not emptiness.

Not silence.

Recognition.

"…So that's it."

Below them, teachers unleashed their strongest spells.

Golden spears of light.

Barrier matrices.

Summoning circles tearing open space.

All of it collided with the descending entity—

And was swallowed.

No explosion.

No resistance.

Just disappearance.

As if magic itself was being eaten.

Darius stepped back. "No… no, no, no—this is impossible."

Elena looked at Ren. "Say something!"

Ren finally moved.

Slowly.

He took one step toward the edge of the rooftop.

Then another.

"Ren!" Elena grabbed his arm again. "Don't!"

But he gently removed her hand.

Not forcefully.

Not coldly.

Just… certain.

"I think I understand," he said.

"What?"

He looked up at the collapsing sky.

"The reason I couldn't use mana."

A pause.

"The world never rejected me."

His eyes narrowed slightly.

"It was sealed away."

The Abyss Entity roared.

The sound cracked stone across the academy.

And then—

It stopped mid-air.

Completely.

Like something had grabbed it.

Held it.

Frozen it.

Every student below went silent in confusion and terror.

Even Darius.

Even Elena.

Ren's hand rose slightly.

Not fully.

Just a fraction.

Like someone testing invisible strings.

And the creature in the sky… twitched.

For the first time.

It responded.

Elena whispered, horrified.

"…Ren… what are you doing?"

But Ren didn't answer.

Because deep inside him—

Something that had been asleep his entire life…

Finally blinked awake.
