Chapter 2 - TOO FAMILIAR

The moment Ethan Blackwell stepped out of the elevator, something felt… wrong.

Not in the obvious way.

Not something his executives would notice.

But something deeper.

Something instinctive.

"Mr. Blackwell, the board is waiting—"

"Cancel it."

The assistant froze. "Sir?"

Ethan didn't slow down.

"I said cancel it."

His tone left no room for questions.

Because for the first time in years… his focus wasn't on business.

It was on a child.

Upstairs.

Lila sat stiffly in the waiting room, her fingers intertwined tightly in her lap.

Across from her, Leo swung his small legs back and forth, completely unaware of the storm brewing around them.

"Mommy," he whispered, leaning closer, "that man downstairs… he looked scary."

Lila forced a soft smile.

"He's just someone important," she said gently.

Leo tilted his head.

"…but he kept looking at me."

Her heart skipped.

"I know," she said quietly, brushing his hair back. "Just stay close to me, okay?"

Leo nodded obediently.

"I will."

Then, after a pause—

"Don't worry, Mommy. I'll protect you."

Lila blinked.

Something warm broke through the fear in her chest.

"Protect me?" she repeated softly.

Leo puffed his chest a little, serious.

"Yes. I'm strong now."

For a moment—

Just a moment—

Everything felt okay.

Then the door opened.

"Miss Monroe, you can come in now."

Lila stood up, taking Leo's hand.

But before she could step forward—

A sudden commotion erupted from the hallway.

Footsteps.

Fast. Urgent.

Then—

The HR woman's expression changed instantly.

"Mr. Blackwell—!"

Lila froze.

No…

Too fast.

Ethan walked in like a storm.

Controlled. Cold. Dangerous.

His presence filled the room instantly, suffocating everything else.

And this time—

He wasn't looking at Lila.

He was looking at Leo.

That gaze.

Sharp. Unmoving.

Like he was trying to see through him.

Leo shifted slightly, gripping Lila's hand tighter.

"Mommy…" he whispered.

Lila stepped forward instinctively, placing herself between them.

"Mr. Blackwell," she said, forcing calm into her voice. "Is there a problem?"

Silence.

Heavy.

Uncomfortable.

Then—

Ethan spoke.

"How old is he?"

The question landed hard.

Lila's pulse spiked.

"…Excuse me?"

Ethan took a step closer.

"Your son," he said, his voice low. "How old is he?"

Lila's mind raced.

Think.

Think.

"Five," she answered finally.

The truth.

But dangerous.

Ethan's jaw tightened almost imperceptibly.

Five.

The number echoed in his mind.

Five years ago…

"Come here."

The command wasn't directed at her.

It was directed at Leo.

"No."

The word slipped out of Lila's mouth instantly.

Too fast.

Too protective.

Too revealing.

Ethan's eyes flickered.

Interest.

Suspicion.

Something darker.

"Why not?" he asked quietly.

Lila swallowed.

"He's just a child."

"And I'm just asking a question."

Before she could react—

Leo stepped out from behind her.

"Leo—" she started.

"It's okay, Mommy," he said softly.

And then—

He looked up at Ethan.

Directly.

Fearless.

The resemblance hit harder up close.

Those eyes.

That shape.

That quiet intensity.

Ethan crouched slightly, bringing himself to the child's level.

"What's your name?" he asked.

"Leo."

A pause.

Then Leo added proudly—

"Leo Monroe."

Ethan's gaze flickered.

Monroe.

Her name.

Of course.

"Do you go to school, Leo?" Ethan asked, his tone softer now—unfamiliar even to himself.

Leo nodded.

"Yes! And I'm the best in my class."

A small smile tugged at Ethan's lips.

Barely there.

Unnoticed.

Then—

A loud crash echoed from the hallway.

Everyone flinched.

"Security breach!" someone shouted.

Footsteps. Running.

Panic spreading quickly.

Lila's heart jumped.

Instinct kicked in.

She grabbed Leo immediately, pulling him close.

"It's okay," she whispered, even as her own voice shook.

But Ethan had already stood up.

His expression darkened instantly.

Back to the man everyone feared.

"What happened?" he demanded.

"Someone forced their way in, sir—"

Before the sentence could finish—

A man burst into the room.

Wild. Desperate.

"Where is she?!" he shouted, scanning the room frantically.

Lila's blood ran cold.

No…

It couldn't be—

The man's eyes landed on her.

"There you are."

Everything happened fast.

Too fast.

He rushed forward.

Lila barely had time to react before—

Ethan stepped in front of her.

Blocking him completely.

"Stay behind me," Ethan said, his voice low and deadly.

The man laughed bitterly.

"You think you can protect her?" he sneered. "Do you even know who she is?"

Ethan didn't move.

Didn't blink.

"Leave," he said simply.

The man hesitated.

Just for a second.

Because something in Ethan's eyes…

Wasn't normal.

Security rushed in.

The man was dragged away, still shouting—

"This isn't over, Lila! You can't hide forever!"

Silence fell.

Heavy.

Shaking.

Lila stood frozen.

Her arms wrapped tightly around Leo.

Her past…

Had just caught up with her.

And slowly—

Ethan turned.

His gaze locking onto her.

No longer curious.

No longer distant.

Now—

He was interested.

Interested.

The word didn't belong to Ethan Blackwell.

Not when it came to people.

Not when it came to her.

And yet—

There it was.

Clear in his eyes.

Lila felt it instantly.

That shift.

That dangerous, quiet focus settling over him like a storm about to break.

Her fingers tightened around Leo.Too tight.

Too protective.

"Take the child and wait outside," Ethan said suddenly, his tone leaving no room for argument.

"No."

The refusal came sharp.

Immediate.

Ethan's gaze snapped back to her.

"You're in danger."

"I know how to handle myself."A beat of silence passed.

Then—

"That man knew your name," Ethan said, his voice low. "He came straight for you."

Lila's throat tightened.

She said nothing.

Ethan took a step closer.

"And judging by your reaction…" his eyes darkened slightly, "this isn't new."

She forced herself to meet his gaze.

"Stay out of it."Wrong answer.

Something cold flickered across his face.

"I don't stay out of things that happen in my building."

Before she could respond—

Leo tugged at her sleeve.

"Mommy…" he whispered, glancing nervously toward the door. "Is that man coming back?"

Lila's expression softened instantly.

"No," she said gently, kneeling down to his level. "He won't come near you again."Ethan watched the interaction closely.

The way her voice changed.

The way she touched the child.

The way the boy leaned into her like she was his entire world.

Something unfamiliar twisted in his chest.

"Sir."

A security officer stepped forward.

"We've secured the intruder. He's refusing to speak."

Ethan didn't look away from them.

"Make him talk."Yes, sir."

The officer hesitated, then added—

"He kept saying one thing, sir."

Now Ethan turned.

"What?"

The officer glanced briefly at Lila before speaking.

"He said… 'She shouldn't have come back.'"

Silence.

Heavy.

Unsettling.

Lila's face went pale.

Just for a second.

But Ethan saw it.

That was all he needed.

"Clear the floor," Ethan ordered.

"Sir?"

"I said clear it."

Within moments, the room emptied.

Leaving only three people behind.

Ethan.

Lila.

And the child.

"Start talking."

Lila let out a quiet breath.

"I don't owe you anything."

Ethan's lips curved slightly.

Not a smile.

Something colder.

"Wrong."

He stepped closer.

Slow.

Controlled.

Dangerous.

"You walked into my company with a problem that followed you," he said. "That makes it my business."

"It has nothing to do with you."

Ethan's eyes dropped briefly to Leo.

Then back to her.

"Doesn't it?"

Her heart skipped.

"You're imagining things."

"Am I?"

Before she could answer—

Leo stepped forward again.

Small, but steady.

"Don't talk to my mommy like that."

The room went still.

Ethan looked down at him.

Really looked this time.

The boy didn't flinch.

Didn't look away.

For a brief moment—

Something shifted.

"…What's your name?" Ethan asked.

"Leo."

A pause.

Then—

"Leo Monroe."

Monroe.

Her name.

Of course.

Ethan crouched slightly, bringing himself closer to the child's height.

"How old are you, Leo?"

"I'm five," he said proudly.

Five.

The number hit again.

Harder this time.

Ethan's gaze flickered—quick, calculating.

Then—

Back to the boy.

"Do you always protect your mother like that?" he asked.

Leo nodded seriously.

"Yes."

Then he added—

"Because she protects me too."

Something tightened in Ethan's chest.

Unfamiliar.

Unwelcome.

Slowly—

He stood.

"Both of you are staying here," he said.

"No—"

"That wasn't a suggestion."

Lila's eyes flashed.

"You don't control me."

Ethan's gaze hardened.

"No," he said quietly. "But I can control who gets past my security."

A pause.

Heavy.

"If that man comes back," he continued, "you won't be able to protect him."

Her breath caught.

Not you.

Him.

Ethan's eyes flickered again to Leo.

And this time—

There was no doubt.

He was thinking.

Calculating.

Connecting.

"…Fine," Lila said finally, her voice low. "Just until this is handled."

Ethan gave a single nod.

Then he turned toward the door—

But stopped.

Without looking back, he said—

"Get me everything on Lila Monroe."

A pause.

"And the child."

Lila's heart dropped.

Too late.

The moment she stepped into his world again—

She had already lost control.

And now—

Ethan Blackwell was interested. And that was dangerous.

Lila felt it before she even saw him move.

That shift in the air.

That quiet, suffocating pressure that came whenever he decided something mattered.

And right now—

That something was her.

"Miss Monroe?"

The HR woman's voice broke through the silence, her smile strained now.

"We should—"

"Wait."

The single word stopped everything.

Ethan stepped forward.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Each step echoing across the polished floor.

Lila's pulse spiked.

No.

Not here.

Not like this.

Instinctively, she pulled Leo closer, her hand resting protectively on his shoulder.

"Stay behind me," she whispered.

Leo nodded, though his curious eyes remained fixed on the approaching man.

Ethan stopped just a few steps away.

Close enough.

Too close.

"Lila Monroe."

Her name rolled off his tongue like it had never left.

Her throat tightened.

"…Mr. Blackwell."

Silence stretched between them.

Heavy.

Loaded.

Then—

His gaze dropped.

To the child.

Leo blinked up at him, unafraid.

Curious.

Ethan's eyes narrowed slightly.

Studying.

Comparing.

Calculating.

"How old is he?" he asked.

Lila's fingers curled slightly.

"…Five."

A pause.

Just long enough to feel wrong.

Ethan's jaw tightened almost imperceptibly.

"Five," he repeated.

Something shifted behind his eyes.

Fast.

Sharp.

Gone before it could be named.

"Come here."

The words were directed at Leo.

"No."

Lila's response came instantly.

Too fast.

Too protective.

Ethan's gaze snapped back to her.

A flicker of something dark crossed his expression.

"Why not?"

"He's a child."

"And I'm speaking to him."

Before she could stop him—

Leo stepped out slightly.

"Leo—"

"It's okay, Mommy," he said softly.

And then—

He looked straight at Ethan.

Up close—

The resemblance was undeniable.

Ethan crouched slowly, bringing himself to the child's level.

For the first time—

His voice lost its edge.

"What's your name?"

"Leo."

A small pause.

Then proudly—

"Leo Monroe."

Monroe.

Of course.

Ethan studied him.

Not casually.

Not politely.

But like he was trying to solve something.

"Do you know who I am?" Ethan asked.

Leo shook his head.

"No."

A beat.

"Do you want to?" Ethan added.

Before Leo could answer—

A loud crash echoed from the hallway.

Everyone flinched.

"Security breach!" someone shouted.

Lila's heart jumped violently.

No—

The door burst open.

A man stumbled in.

Breathing hard.

Eyes wild.

"There you are!"

His gaze locked onto Lila.

Fear shot through her instantly.

Real.

Raw.

Uncontrolled.

Leo felt it.

"Mommy…?"

Lila pulled him back sharply.

"Stay behind me!"

The man started forward—

But he didn't get far.

Ethan moved.

Fast.

Precise.

He stepped in front of Lila, blocking her completely.

"Stop."

The single word was enough.

The man froze.

Not because he wanted to.

But because something in Ethan's presence made it impossible not to.

"You shouldn't be here," Ethan said calmly.

The man let out a shaky laugh.

"And you shouldn't be protecting her."

Ethan didn't react.

Didn't even blink.

"Leave," he said.

The man's eyes flickered past him.

To Lila.

"To think you came back…" he muttered. "You really don't learn."

"Say another word," Ethan's voice dropped, colder now, "and you won't leave at all."

A beat.

Then—

Security rushed in, grabbing the man and dragging him back.

"This isn't over!" he shouted, struggling. "You can't hide forever, Lila!"

The door slammed shut.

Silence.

Heavy.

Shaking.

Lila's legs felt weak.

Her grip on Leo tightened.

Too tight.

Too desperate.

"Mommy…" Leo whispered.

"I'm here," she said quickly, kneeling and pulling him into her arms. "I'm right here."

Behind her—

Ethan turned slowly.

His gaze settled on her again.

But this time—

There was no distance.

No indifference.

Only one thing.

Focus.

"That wasn't random," he said.

Lila didn't answer.

"He knew you," Ethan continued. "And you were afraid."

She forced herself to stand.

"I said I can handle it."

Ethan stepped closer.

Close enough that she could feel the weight of his presence again.

"You're staying."

Her head snapped up.

"No."

"That wasn't a request."

"I'm not staying here."

Ethan's eyes flickered briefly to Leo.

Then back to her.

"If he comes back," he said quietly, "you won't be able to protect him."

Her breath caught.

Not you.

Him.

And that—

That was where he had her.

A long silence passed.

"…Just until this is handled," she said finally.

Ethan gave a small nod.

Then he turned to his security.

"Find out who that man is."

A pause.

"And everything about her."

Lila's heart dropped.

Too late.

She had stepped back into his world.

And now—

Ethan Blackwell wasn't letting her go.
