Chapter 4 - When the Key Starts to Speak

The moment they left the chamber, the air felt wrong.

Not dangerous.

Not cold.

Just… aware.

Tiamara Vale kept the fragment close to her chest as they moved through the corridor. It was heavier than it looked, like it carried weight that didn't belong to matter.

Jessara walked ahead, already analyzing.

Luneth stayed quiet—too quiet.

Lucien kept scanning the walls like he expected them to blink.

Mirelle walked closest to Tia.

And Bishop—

Bishop kept looking at Tia.

Not the fragment.

Not the path.

Her.

"You're doing that thing again," Mirelle whispered.

Tia didn't look up. "What thing?"

"The 'I'm fine but actually I'm hearing ancient voices in my head' thing."

Tia almost smiled.

Almost.

"…It's not voices," she said softly.

Bishop's voice cut in immediately. "Then what is it?"

Tia hesitated.

Because she didn't have a clean answer anymore.

"…It's like remembering something I never learned."

That made Luneth stop walking for half a second.

Jessara turned slightly. "That's not possible."

Tia nodded. "I know."

But she didn't sound unsure.

She sounded… certain in a way that scared even her.

🗝️ THE FIRST SHIFT

Outside the underground structure, Paris looked unchanged.

But Tia felt it immediately.

The fragment reacted to daylight.

A faint pulse under her fingers.

Not visible.

Not physical.

Just present.

Raen…

The word came again.

Not spoken.

Not imagined.

Awakening.

Tia stopped walking.

Everyone noticed.

"Okay," Bishop said carefully, stepping closer. "What's happening?"

Tia didn't answer right away.

Because something else was happening too.

The city.

It wasn't just around them anymore.

It felt like it was looking at them.

"…We need to leave," Lucien said immediately.

Jessara frowned. "We just got here."

"No," Lucien replied. "We got noticed here."

That word landed differently.

Not fear.

Not panic.

Recognition.

Luneth slowly pulled her laptop out again.

Opened it.

Paused.

"…That's not good," she muttered.

"What?" Mirelle asked quickly.

Luneth turned the screen.

A live data feed.

Not normal.

Encrypted systems were flickering across it like disturbed water.

Then—

a symbol appeared.

Vaelith.

Exactly the same one.

But this time—

it wasn't static.

It was active.

Tia felt her stomach drop slightly.

"…It's responding," she whispered.

Jessara narrowed her eyes. "To what?"

Tia looked at the fragment in her hand.

"…To this."

---

🏛️ SOMEWHERE ELSE

Far away from Paris.

In a place built of silence and precision.

Aurelian Virex stood still.

Behind him, glass walls reflected nothing but controlled light and controlled systems.

Seraphine Virex didn't move from her seat.

But her voice broke the silence.

"…It activated."

Aurelian didn't turn. "Which one."

"The first fragment."

A pause.

Then—

"…So they've started."

Seraphine's fingers tapped once against the table.

Not nervous.

Measuring.

"They weren't supposed to find it this early," she said.

Aurelian's voice was calm.

Dangerously calm.

"Then someone led them to it."

Silence followed that.

Then Seraphine finally stood.

"…Find the girl."

Aurelian's gaze shifted slightly.

"…Tiamara Vale."

It wasn't a question.

It was confirmation.

Seraphine nodded once.

"She's reacting to it."

A pause.

Then softer—

"…That means she can hear it."

Aurelian finally turned.

And for the first time—

something like concern passed through his expression.

"Then Eryndor is closer than we thought."

---

🌙 BACK IN PARIS

Tia didn't know any of that.

But she felt it.

Like pressure shifting in the air.

Like something had answered her presence.

Bishop stepped slightly closer again.

Not invading.

Just… steady.

"You okay?" he asked quietly.

Tia looked at him.

Really looked at him this time.

And for a second—

the noise in her mind softened.

Not gone.

Just quieter.

"…I think it knows I'm here," she said.

Bishop tilted his head. "And is that supposed to be comforting or terrifying?"

Tia almost laughed.

"…Neither."

That earned a faint smirk from him.

Jessara clapped once sharply. "We leave. Now."

"No argument," Lucien agreed.

But Luneth didn't move.

She was staring at her screen again.

"…Guys," she said slowly.

Everyone turned.

Her voice dropped.

"It's not just reacting."

A pause.

Then—

"It's tracking us."

Silence hit again.

Harder this time.

Mirelle whispered, "…We're being followed by a historical death puzzle. Great."

Bishop exhaled slowly. "Okay. That's new."

Tia tightened her grip on the fragment.

And for the first time—

she understood something without the language telling her.

Not fully.

But enough.

This wasn't just discovery anymore.

It was a response.

Something had been asleep.

And now—

it was waking up through her.

---

🌌 END SHIFT

That night, Tia couldn't sleep.

Not because she was scared.

Because when she closed her eyes—

she saw it again.

Eryndor.

Not as a place.

As a feeling.

And deeper than that—

a question.

Why you?

Her fingers slowly curled.

The fragment pulsed once in the dark.

Soft.

Certain.

And somewhere far away—

something else pulsed back.
